"They leave. Because they should, or they find someone else. And some of them -- some of them... forget me. I suppose in the end.... They break my heart."
And I realize this goes all the way back to the beginning. WHY? WHY can't somebpdy just STAY? ONCE?!
Very emotional departer and one of the best if you ask me or thought not quite as good as Adric's departer in Earthshock (which was also written by Eric Saward).
Overall Resurrection of the Daleks is an enjoyable romp it may not be the best Peter Davison story or the best Dalek story but I would rather watch this story than all the Dalek storys from the new series (Save for Dalek & Bad Wolf/Parting of the Ways).
People like to say that the Doctor was always trying to get rid of Tegan, but this is proof of just how fond they were of each other.
I loved Tegan so much. This story is a bit crap but Janet's performance here is so moving. I can never imagine Peter Davison's era without Tegan - they were a perfect complement to each other.
That scene where she looks at the TARDIS taking off always gets me.
First time I saw this, even at the age of about 7, I was extremely happy, I hated Tegan and didn't understand why the Doctor wanted her with him. She was so annoying.
thanks for posting this, some idiot called luckytardis posted some crap personal er edit off the epsidoe where he had fucking mad world playing over this scene so I wanted to see it with the original 80s soundtrack, and the music was fine, wish people would just leave things as they are
Seriously, when she repeated that... I never thought Doctor Who could make me cry like that :(
It was so heartwarming when the Doctor said that to her, every time when the situation seemed hopeless and she'd given up... He gave her the courage with that sentence.
I often wondered when the builders/developers came to renovate these dockside properties what they did with all the dead bodies and Daleks etc. Torchwood, maybe?
When you think about the death and destruction that lies in the wake of the Doctor's travels, it's surprising why more companions have not chosen to leave him. Teagn's exit from the series is understandable. While she liked the Doctor and cared for him a great deal, she couldn't put up with the carnage anymore.....
It's nice to see a companion call it quits instead of being forcibly seperated from the Doctor against their own will. Martha Jones also felt the time had come for her to move on too
I blame Eric Saward, he sacrificed character development for drama and he also sacrificed characters for drama. He never got that the TARDIS crew are what the fans care about..
Teagan was in about as many adventures as Sarah Jane, and almost as many as Rose. Teagan didn't just leave the Doctor, she literally RAN from him. That leaves a big dramatic door open to see her one more time, to get the true closure we didn't quite see in this farewell. There were several eps that ended where she, Turlough and the Doctor seemed to be the only people left standing, with dead bodies all around. She should have had a scene where she talked about that "survivor's remorse" feeling.
@CaptDingDong Tegan is kind of inconsistently written in this story. At one point she is horrified when the Doctor says he is going to kill Davros, but later she helps use a bio-weapon against the Daleks. Part of me wonders if this was something she had in mind when leaving, an example of how she did not like how things were going.
I agree there would be room for her to return (besides the BF appearance she made) and that survivors remorse was one of the reasons she left.
It was quite shocking when she ran back because she had either changed her mind or wanted to say good bye to him, and he was already inside his little spaceship. It's quite devastating how she just... runs away from him
Tegan wasn't one of my favorite companions, and i think that they could have gotten a better actress to play her at times. But at the same time she was a part of some really great stories, including this one, and the character was a vital part of them.
@MacJaxonManOfAction And then the Doctor didn't WHINE about it for another two series! Good Lord, I enjoy New Who and they've had some great stories, but frankly, I don't care HOW much a Doctor cares for a companion, he should NOT be so damn emo about it!
Tegan was my favourite companion. It was HEARTBREAKING when she left. It was never the same after this. In the next story Turlough leaves, Peri enters. The story after that, Peter Davison leaves. It only went downhill from here.
A very sad ending here at the end of Part 4 of "Resurrection of the Daleks", a great Doctor Who story, sad to see Tegan leave. I understood why Tegan left cause of all the deaths she seen here in this story, but not just this story, her Aunt Vanessa and Adric's death could have also made her decide not to travel with the Doctor anymore.
...and yet he was always making out he thought she was such a pain.
In the episode straight after this, 'Planet Of Fire', he admits that he is depressed due to Tegan's departure. She was like one of those little annoyances that is so easy to get used to and he was surprised in himself to realise that he was going to miss her. :(
Yes! It seems that NOONE notices that, right? All people remember Five's not-so-cheerful-face when Tegan returned in 'Arc of Infinity' and their quite tense relationship (specially in season 19), so lots got stuck with the idea that they didn't get along. They forget this scene, the only time any Doctor actively tries to stop a companion from leaving him, and the only time he admits that he should change his ways. Clearly Tegan was a much more important companion than we give her credit for
@ShootStyleZombie Not completely true... I believe that he tried to dissuade Ian and Barbara from leaving, and was even angry with them for even thinking of saying goodbye.

-Tegan,
-It's stopped being fun, Doctor.

Those were the days...when two minutes were devoted to a companion unexpectedly departing, rather than two whole series.

Isn't it funny she ran back inside towards the TARDIS. Did she change her mind? Was there something left unsaid? Hmmm.
