This is NOT "HDR"......you merely OVER-saturated the r_glow values to something ridiculous to cause extreme BLOOM (which is NOT High Dynamic Range). HDR requires SM 3.0 and DirectX 9.0c. This card cannot support either feature as it is only a SM2.0 card with DirectX 9.0b support. However it DOES have fast clock speed and GDDR3.....despite it's LACK in unified stream processors with just 16 vertex/pixel shaders.
I remember when i bought the ATI Radeon X850XT Platinum Edition for like $549 bucks and it destroyed anything and everything at the time and even as it aged, it still played the newest games out at max settings like COD4 etc. The X800 series has the horsepower to play these modern games but lacks the SM 3.0 to render the graphics which is a shame. The X850 XT PE was one of the best GPU i have ever purchased, it destroyed the 6800 Ultra by a shitload.
haha yeah, the X850XT was definetly a HELL of a card..... I never did understand why it lacked SM 3.0... I think it would actually be able to run Crysis well *enough*...despite the relatively low pipelines compared to actual SM3.0/4.0 cards. I still think the X1950XT was a phenomenal card... it's basically the Xenos GPU for the Xbox 360 except no DX10 features and 36 pipelines compared to 48 unified shaders. But nowadays it's all about pipelines and unified shaders.
Hey man, the 360 doesn't sport any DX10 features, it has DX 10 like** features but it can't run the DX10 API seeing as the hardware isn't fast enough to do a solid 32 fps at all times. And your right, nowadays its all about the Unified Shader architectures and Stream Processors. My GTX 275 has 240 processing cores all working in parallel! It flies.
No......there's no such thing as "DX LIKE features"....that's why I carefully said FEATURES..... and not the actual API. Research it, i know what I'm talking about. It's not like XBOX original where it EMULATED DX9 shader effects.... the unified core and shader model 3.0+ DOES process DX10 algorithms...BUT, it doesn not have the full library. No "emulation" is implemented...to emulate DX10 would mean to cause severe FPS loss through unnecessary instruction sets.
I actually KNOW what I'm talking about and can cite sources directly..... you provided NO argument to support your OPINION compared to my FACT. The fact that you just randomly said the Xenos has NO DX10 FEATURES shows you never did ANY research on it's architecture at all. Why don't you ask yourself (or better yet, RESEARCH) what GPU was the R600 GPU (the first ATI DX10 GPU) BASED off of then get back at me. You apparently only look at clock speeds not tech.
The X850 XT Platinum Edition that I owned played Call of Duty 4 at max settings at 1440X900 no problem and no lag what so ever. It lagged in Crysis here and there at 1280Z1024 but at 1024X768 the game play was smooth at Medium settings.
Dude what are you talking about, Half Life 2 HDR works fine with the X850 XT that i had previously no patches required. Now i have an Nvidia GTX 275 but the X850 XT was a nasty card. It played Oblivion at Max Settings with HDR at 1280X1024 with 4X AA.
....also, the X850XT's graphics CORE architecture lacked Shader Model 3.0 which is essentially the requirement for true HDR processing algorithm. The X8** series only had Shader Model 2.0b. Of course hardware limits aren't always an issue when sheer power can compensate...and as you know Source games are NOT that demanding so the x850's core clock and raw power was able to process the High Dynamic Range instruction sets that weren't implemented in DX9b a.k.a. (Shader Model 2.0b).
Actually, you can activate HDR on Source games, for example HL series e etc. Read about HDR on Wikipedia, and then you will udnerstand that it's possible, but really rare (using HDR on a shader 2 hardware)
Yeah, you ARE correct, in the aspect of it IS possible with a SM2.0 card..but my comment was in reference to a legacy SM2.0 card with DirectX 9.0b and prior HARDWARE support. HDR is only possible minimally, for actual proper render, through DX9 API for SM2.0+ cards with HARDWARE support for DirectX 9.0c standard. However, it IS technically possible, regardless of ANY hardware OR GPU for that matter to reproduce the same HDR algorithms/but you will MOST likely NOT have an image
shit! i have the same video card (ati radeon x800) but everytime i put the water to something else than low it says custom but the water still looks like it is on low.. where do i get the mod lol?!?!
What is the best video card for, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, The? I mean, I want ultra high, every thing (graphics wise) on high a*s quality! Please, please, help me.
Pffft, HDR my rear end. Thats nothing but a bloom shader, HDR is impossible with SM 2.0b. Now Crysis out of the box that comes with true HDR rendering, far superior to any faky bloom substitute.
Yees, RHCAXO has it dead right; if a game engine uses integer-based (or 'whole number')calculations for HDR then a PS2.0 card can do it fine. But many games other than the source engine use FP32 as the standard for HDR calculations (32 bit floating point or numbers with 4 numerals after the decimal decimal) instead of integer calculations.
this card is really good and better than most dx10 cards out...the problem is it's old hardware and doesn't support dx10 or sm 3.0 which makes it worse than competetors for gaming.
i think that's a fake...it running too smooth...don't believe this bullshit,i got a x800xtpe on a amd4000+ 1,5 gigs of ram and i know what's the x800's chip power i got up 6000+ in 3dmark 05 but crysis run very slowly every low..
yes they do. they are very powerful, even if they are a little outdated by newer, SM4 Dx10 video card. the x800/x850 series is a very high end radeon.

To enable HDR in a X800 is very simple:Type con_restricted 0;r_HDRRendering 1;r_HDRAllownonFP 1
After that, you tweak the HDR in your way.
It runs fine,BUT,it becomes all wrong when you save the game or load a previous save...I don´t know why.
gugafrombr 2 years ago
Are there any tweaks in specific that you would reccomend? I've been working at this for quite some time now but havent quite got it right.
