Well let's be realistic, the pilots had done everything possible to control the plane to no avail and maintenance had no way of knowing this was a total mechanical failure. The plane was doomed.......
@tranquillofdarkness How was this the Maintenance guy's fault? There was Mechanical Failure on the plane, it was doomed. The people responsible were the ones who ordered the planes to go out without the proper Maintenance....
I really have to take exception to Nance's verbiage at 6.19 about getting a "magic answer". Those pilots were trying to seek at least a token amount guidance about their predicament. For whatever reason, the ground guy didn't seem to have anywhere near the experience that the responsibility of his position called for. I wonder if cockpit resource management ever deals with having the pilots address obtuse ground contacts - the ground people could at least try to find someone who knows something.
My respects to cpt Thompson and first officer Tansky true heros maintenance was so useless L.A air controler was more helpfull they had a handfull of airplane the same as aeroperu603 cpt Eric Shriver and Frst officer David Fernandez all four pilots did not deserve what happened all heros and John Leontine top notch mechanic Alaska to save a few 1000.s of dollars they paid millions as they say in spanish being cheap gets more expensive Lo barato sale caro md80s are good planes
That maintenance guy was useless. It reminded me of that Bugs Bunny cartoon when the plane is going down and Bugs is reading the manual and Yosemite Sam is demanding him to read faster. Then this fool tells them to do whatever they want at their discretion.
@ReturnofLatinPupE Its freaakin infuriating watching as to how the maintenance people were reacting. Talk about incompetence and uncaring. When stuff like this happens, there should be a top priority code reaction.
This also shows how much flight attendants really earn their pay and show their profession proud.
i feel so bad for the pilots in this particular crash. what a terrible way to die... exerting themselves fully, trying everything they can think of, knowing their efforts are futile- neverending adrendaline, sheer terror.
Wow MAINTENANCE a lot of help you idiots were!!! Those pilots were amazing and tried everything possible. I remember this crash when it happened! So sad! God bless all those who lost their lives in that horrific crash!
FUCK MD 80s and FUCK Alaska Airlines for their stupid negligence. Like Southwest you guys should get together and go bowling you got plenty to talk about...
I know I heard that too...when I heard the voice recordings I have to say it brought tears to my eyes. You know those pilots knew it was really horrible and I'm sure in their minds they knew they were going down..but my God they did everything they physically, mentally could do. I don't like when the narrator refers to the pilots making a "fatal error" These pilots tried everything possible. I was living right off the coast where the plane went down..RIP to all those lost.
thats really sad but they did a great thing to keep the plane off the LAND Captain Thompsan and first officer Tansky were one of those incredible pilots experienced and new what they werre doing. which recording did you here? ATC or CVR
Not only were they trying to save all the passengers on board that flight...they took all the lives in to consideration that were on approach to LAX for their emergency landing. When you live in a neighborhood nearby an airport you try not to think about disasters like this..but they do happen..the outcome of this could have been so much worse if not for the expertise of those pilots..taking it to the ocean saved many lives on the ground...true heroes..
u shud think about landing the plane asap and declare emergency once shit like this happenes but over here piklots are carrying on with their route

Maintenance guy should have been lynched for his incompetence. Everyone died on that flight because of the amount of FAIL that oozes from their ears.

DC9 and their spin-offs were then and now.. noisy (crude) flying clunkers.. Sort of like riding in Chevy Citation/Ford Taurus of the skies.

Maybe they should have used the PA to call the big guys in the cabin to help pull the yoke..

@jkiang If they were relying on the arm strength of the pilots, this wouldn't have been a bad idea.

according to the NTSB the crew even tried to fly the aircraft upside down and were still holding on to the control while the plane was upside down.
