  • Aaah...! I remember seeing this on deviantART and...I thought it was...amazing! :D

  • i just watched this and the other version and i think this one is better because the music fits better unlike oasis... :)

  • Wow! Amazing! This was truly inspiring for a wannabe filmmaker like me!

This shows what you can do with relatively cheap equipment. The song in the end is so right on the spot! Love it! :-D

  • Pretty damn good. Very original plotline - somewhat - that's hard to do nowadays.

Th acting was also good, which was a pleasant surprise.

  • hey sweet film!!! i wonder how you did the fire sequence? the smoke, and the shot where caitlin was running away with the house alight in the background? Also, the newspaper? the headline? and whereabouts did you film this? it looks amazing!!

  • The smoke was done with a smoke machine (with a bit of red colour tint in editing). The burning lounge room was an outdoor set-up which i set on fire . And the distant house fire shot was done by overlaying shots of fire into the windows. The newspaper material was all made up with a bit of cut & pasting.

And finally the film was shot in Kergunyah, which is a country town in Australia. Cheers :)

  • @andrewpearce89 awesome work man i love your film

  • (continued) SPOILER ALERT

Hillary doesn't hear the phone, and dies in the fire. The little girl waits up and hears the fire brigade. In the morning she is getting ready for the boy's funeral when she sees the paper that tells her Hilary died. She runs to the death pone to call her, maybe to say sorry, but when Hilary picks up she says the exact same thing that the boy did. The girl calls other names from the book, and they all say the same thing. She realizes she murdered a girl for nothing.

  • SPOILER ALERT! Do not read if you haven't watched yet.

    FANTASTIC film btw.

OK. In case you didn't get it,

The girl finds a phone to call the dead, so she calls to see if the boy was really murdered or not. He answers, and says "someone did this to me. They need to get what they deserve." The girl then overhears Hilary saying "he deserved what he got," and thinks that she is the murderer.

She decides to burn down the house, but calls first to make sure Hilary isn't home. (see continued)

  • i had to think about it for a while before i fully understood the plot line... but oh my god! that's really freaky! this shows so much talent. if you don't get it, just think about it...

  • looks good...im sure i'd be in suspense if the story was more clear.

  • Amazingamazingamazingamazing!

I'm not a media student so I don't really know what I'm talking about, but the camera shots were incredible

Loved the use of music at the end too.

  • I love this movie, but since I'm not english mothertongue I have a little problem to understand what the girl exactly says between 3:38 and 4:12... what I understand is "yes i'm happy about what happpened and you should be too. yeah of course! he just left everything... [here I don't understand anymore]"

If someone could please help me by wiriting it I'd be very grateful :)

  • i read about your movie in the paper last year,

    its really impressive.

lol and yeh im doing media this year aswell and im hoping to kick ass and such.

I was wondering, where did you get your music from because I know for top screens you cant use copy righted music?

  • Very nice work, really well shot, and the music fits perfectly.

I'm doing VCE media this year, so thanks for putting this up on the internet :)

  • That went right over my head. I just didn't get it. Was the little girl the killer of all those people in the book?

  • mate, good work

cinematography, pacing and story was well done

and the music went very well

    excellent job,

    muchlove, jayden :)

  • welldone!like pretty much everyone else,i saw this at top screens too!my whole class loved it - we're all jealous of ya skills... i think vca would be an EXCELLENT choice for you.hopefully ya interview and results go great - this film has gotta be the best resume ever haha.what study score did you get for media?i've just finished my own film and am hoping for top screens but dont think it can compare at all next to yours.and... i prefer this ending - i love oasis, but this song was better suited.

  • Sorry if the question sounds silly.. :( But what does the girl exactly says between 3:52 and 4:11? I understang the main sense, but I can't understand the words, since I'n mot english mothertongue... cna someone write down, please?

Anyway, I prefer this version. This song at the end is adds really more strenght, more "deepness" to the scene. It's wonderful, great job.

  • I'm so glad I found this after searching vx2100s.

I've used mine for skate videos, but I've become really interested in filmmaking lately.

This was a real inspiration for me. Great job! I loved the colors and am pretty amazed at the picture quality here, being that it's on youtube.

    Loved it.

  • Wow.... Haha like pretty much everyone else here im trying to get into Top Screen this year and yeahp I don't stand a chance. The Cinematography in this film is beautiful. Where abouts did you film this?

Is the Sony cam you used your own?

And also...the music wow. Did you get the rights to this or are you some sort of amazing composer as well? haha

    Amazing film! Great job!

  • hello, thankyou :)

this was filmed in the small country town where i live near wodonga, just wondering from farm to farm getting differnt shots pretty much.

yeah i was going to hire a good vid cam, but there was no hire places in the area, so i just went out and brought one, which was a good move for me. haha no not my music, i got permission to use the music royalty free as long as the film isnt used for profit. i got permission just by emailing the artists.

    thanks.

  • mate........

Im doing vce media this year and im doing my folio now, and ive actually been looking over yours from the top designs website, i only just saw your film then.

    Holy crap.

    I stand no chance. haha

    that was absoloutely insane.

I am going to go kill myself now hahaha

    goodjob man.

  • You are a film god!, easily the best film at top screen, just went to see it. So my first question is did you use a lens adapter? my second is what are you doing now? are you still pursuing film? I'm in year 12 this year, my goal is to get into top screen, i can try haha.

  • thankyou :) i didnt use a lens adaptor, but i boosted up all the colour options in the camera, used manual focus, and paid close attention the the white balance, to get the either full colourful of greens and yellows or the cold blue look.

i actually did this film in year 11, so im doing year 12 this year to. im thinking of going to victorian college of arts for film school, but still wondering.

good luck with top screen, hope it all works out.

  • Great Cinematography mate.

Good pacing and I liked the nice little story.

    Top work.

Looks like you put a lot of hard work into this.

    Good on you

  • This is amazing; I also viewed this at Top Screens. The way you put everything together is amazing. When she runs after burning down the house it so reminds me of the hills in the Sound Of Music! So pretty! I thought she knew Hilary was inside? But freaking awesome job!

  • OMG THAT WAS AWESOME, i am doing media too and we are about to start planning our films and you have just inspired me so so so much! my original idea seems shit compared to yours! WELL DONE i loved it!

  • lol allways so enthusiastic

and if you copy him i will know lol

  • LOL nah i wont copy him wes! but his film is dam good!

  • i went to top screen today and your film is the best i've ever seen! i got told to shut up so many times because i just kept going on about how good it was lol :)

anyways you did a really great job with this!

  • i saw this at top screen also... man this is megaly frigin awesome... now way could anyone in my gay country town do this.. good job.. absolutely loved it

  • yer um. don wanna seem mean or anything like that, but ur pretty fregin lucky to have a budget like that to get the expensive cams and gear like that, otherwise ud b doomed like the kids down at my school. we're pretty much fucked.

  • yeah i think i know what you mean. but makin movies is wat i do, and iv been savin for that camera long time.

the budget woulda been under $40.

the rest relied on a tripod and good ppl lettin me use there resources.

so you can still make a decent film, even though the cam may be a lil low quality. u still need 2 put the effort in.

    good luck with it.

  • dude, i saw this at top screen the other day, it was bloody awesome, i loved the story line, and particularly the colour job, what program / camera did you use to do that???

  • i used ulead video studio 11 for all editing (basic as) and a sony vx 2100e.

    thanks :)

  • I like the camera job but the story didn't really make sense. The Black Book the girl found, was that a phone book for the dead? and the fire that killed the woman, who lit the fire? the girl or someone else? I'm not being rude or anything but i'm confused by the whole concept of the film made me confuse, please explain. I loved the camera, as I'm a camera person myself and thought that really stood out. Well done on that!

  • yeah the book is a directory to the dead, so she phones her brother (randal huts) who had recently mysteriously passed away. her dead brother wants her to get revenge on his killer. so the girl suspects its hillary after overhearing conversation, so she burns her house down not realising hillary is inside. she finds out she killed her, goes back to phone and rings hillary and finds out that no matter who you ring they all say exactly the same thing.

but thankyou, glad you liked the shots.

  • i thought the story line was extremely easy to understand (no offense to rubberdoggybone)... no explanation needed!

  • Hey, great job. What's the song playing at the end?

  • the song is 'forgiveness' by Misen. thanku :)

  • Thanks. Great job once again. The best of all the Top Screen entrants.

  • Very nice job !

  • This film is awesome! well done!! Your Mark must've been awesome :O

    10/10

  • hey,

i just saw this film a couple of days ago when i when with my school to topscreen.

i thnk its amazing, how long did it take you to make the whole thing?

and was it hard to get the song rights? cos i want to get some for a song for my film and not sure how to go about it..

love the song at the end btw :)

  • overall this took about 4 months.

for the music all i do is find the artist email address through google or whatever (do this asap because it takes them a while to reply). And also if you want a good chance of getting the rights, mention it is for a school project and no money will be made from it. other then that you just have to hope they will reply, i have had many artist ignore me, and some reply but they get into a fuss bout proper copyright.

    have fun :)

  • wow thats so good! im doing yr 12 media this yr. any advice. i defintely dont av the camera u had and im planning on making a music video. i love the colour on your short film. it really came out well congrats!

  • i would probably suggest that you use the time you have to make it pretty efficiently, cause it really does go fast.

with music videos, dont stick to just still shots, move around the people and it seriously does make a huge differnce.

what i usually do is i sync the movement with the music and that makes it fun to watch. keep it quickly edited and like when theres a beat in the song thats when a shot changes

well thats how i lik2 edit. have fun!

  • How did u get these colours man? Wow. I got an VX2100 too. But it's great! And how did u get that 2:35:1?

  • i used 'custom preset' to boost the colours. i filmed it in the cameras 16:9 but in editing i used the black text backdrop to create the 2:35:1 look.

  • Wich 'custom preset' wich program?

  • the custom preset on the camera. the program i used for editing was ulead video studio 11

  • very nice! but too much close-ups. they are pretty annoying. :)

  • That was fantastic.

I'm just starting to work on my year 12 video, and this has made me all the more excited!

    Thanks for sharing.

  • good short film!!

what mark did u get for this project?

  • i got an a+, im happy with that. thanks.

  • I just want to let you know that me and my friend think this video is amazing. We overall love it! It has a really good twist in each. Like i said, amazing. Love the plot!!

  • Hey andrew! Loved this film. Great use of depth of field and overall it's just beautiful. How's this version different to the first by the way?

  • the 1st one ends with a slow edit and the song 'stop crying your heart out' where as the 2nd is ends with a quicker edit and the song 'forgiveness'.

    glad you like it :)

  • Oh okay my bad. I like how you edited the sort of 'home footage' stuff together at the end of the first version, but I think it kind of breaks the mood a little. The ending of version 2 is much stronger and more chilling if you know what I mean... Anyways, extraordinary work for year 12 nonetheless. Hi five for you =)

  • good colour correction, almost flawless.

    5 stars

  • is she calling dead people? cool plot! :)

  • yeh she is calling dead people. firstly she calls her brother, and then she calls the girl she killed in the house fire.

and the ending can be interpreted in many ways.

  • this is really really good, and i love your other stuff also.
