  • would you consider sharing information as to how you machined the cutter.....o.d. of cutter ect .ect. i would like to build one or how you could be contacted......thank you Larry

  • I have a myford lathe. I also learn CNC.

CNC can be a lot of fun too. I love working on the 20 year old Deckel or Mazak CNC machines at school. We also have a new Fanuc controlled milling machine wich I hate. It's like a PC, errors every time I use it. No controls working properly...

I find conventional machines very relaxing in comparison.

  • @slome815

That's rather odd. A properly set-up Fanuc control shouldn't give you any trouble.

  • I wondered how it worked till I got a better look @ this fly cutter in action...you're good!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Its also a nice feeling when a nice hot chip shoots out and lodges itself into your cheek. niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice.

  • or lube hits the chuck, sprays everywhere, and you can taste it.

  • Beauty!!!! I like it when they go down the front of your neck and sit on your collar bone!

  • Or when chips get in your shoes... and step on them.

  • i prefer conventional style latheing over cnc as well. cnc is definitely needed, especially when you need 1000 of the same parts, then its worth it to buy the program, but i work on a manual one every day. i currently have a big old burn on the back of my neck where some nice automat steal chips flew high up in the air,and came down.....right down the back of my shirt.

  • mmmmmmmmm it's nice to hear someone say they prefer to use manual machinery....I worked for a gear shaping company for 15 yrs and learned all i know there ,machine setting grinding turning milling etc ,I only wish I had got some qualifications!!!!! ,still doin ok working for myself in small workshop in hometown...are you on facebook?

  • God i love Machining! Love taking a blank piece and making it into some thing Nice looking and useful : D

  • yes mate........me too! ,making a Jaguar road spring compressing tool at the moment

  • Cool! I have had minimal access to Lathes but what I've done I've learnt my self. No one has lathes (mans machines) any more it's all this CNC stuff. My Grandad was a tool maker on the WW2 Air craft carriers then he was a tool maker at Fordmotorco. I would love to carry on in his foot steps. : )

  • ditto

  • Yikes! the Carrage wheel is on the right side

  • man, them long chips make me nervous, had a friend lose a finger when some 6061 got caught up in the chuck...

  • yes ,,you could mount something off center in a 4 jaw independant chuck, but if you want holes in something in different positions its easier to use the mill

  • Dumb question, but I haven't take a metal working class yet. Can you attach the workpiece to the tailstock to bore irregular holes in the piece?
