Hi! I fish for Himalayan Mahseer in India. I've watched all your videos on You Tube and recommended them to beginner Fly rodders. Top-notch ,tasteful instruction Mr. Bumcast and team.
How come your roll casts the line is up off the water And not just rolling across the surface of the water? Is it just how you prefer to do it or what? I'm trying to learn it and different videos and articles confuse me
WOW....any chance of you coming to South Wales to give me some tips ;)......credit to you AND the camera man for the vid..Amazing fair play,i feel well crap now tho, cheers :D
@Bumcast ...C'mon ill pay for you day ticket, and ill even let you use my spare rod haha!.....watched your vids yesterday,i will def be taking the tips with me to the river, cheers pal
What type of fishing is the SA Expt Distance best used for? I am currently usuing a WFF with a 38' head. I find it a bit hard to shoot and gain good distance with.
Would the SA EX Distance be a good line for longer casts and control? I fish smaller streams to large rivers for trout and occasional steelhead.
Would the SA Mastery be a better choice? Also, would you recommend DT or WF?
Great movies but I recognize that you show all the casts with like 30 ft of line out. How do you actually do when fishing, when you fish the whole cast out and have to start the new cast with only like 10 ft fly line out? Thats my big problem right now, I havent got enough weight outside the rod. Tips?
@jogelinho remember that the difference between conventional fishing and fly fishing is that in fly fishing you are casting the weight of the line and not the weight of a lure or weighted bait.... i would suggested a little bit heavier line
@1234Hulabula@1234Hulabula For a long time I used an SA Hi-Viz distance line, we're now offering a low cost Hi-Viz DT line in our store. The Specs are all listed
There's something I don't get : why is the "wiggle cast" considered as a cast rather than as a mend ? As in the "wiggle cast" we reposition the line after the rod stops, shouldn't we call it the "wiggle mend"? (Just like the reach mend instead of the reach cast) Thank you in advance for your explanation !
@Viktor4386 You make a very good point! - and I suppose it could be termed as both. Many do begin those wiggles before the rod effectively stops - some after. To make a really effective 'wiggle cast/mend' is all tends to happen simultaneously without clear distinction. But that's just me, others may have differing opinions. Interested to hear them.
@Bumcast Thanks for the reply :). That's right, I saw you didn't do a clear distinction between the stop and the wiggle in the film. It was kind of smooth. But whatmade me think it is actually a mend, is that on the step by step explanation it says "Stop the rod" and then "Wiggle". However, I feel that the name isn't as important as the fact, that the wiggle is a great presentation cast, and what's more, it is easy to execute, unlike the curves, which I still can't perform!
I watched your once in a blue moon vid, witch is put together perfectly, I could not get over the casting they just kept on going and going, the other thing that amazed me was how many mice that brown had in it. That just makes me wanna go there.
@Bumcast I feel i need your help again, would you recommend this Scientific Anglers Distance Fly line for fishing trouts and bass? What is your opinion about the Scientific Anglers flylines, especially the Mastery series?
@Bumcast Thank you for the quick reply! Then I'll go for the SA Mastery trout and bass line, I must admit this sounds more logical :).Then what do you use the SA Distance for? Just for for flycasting courses? Or maybe to get distance easily? I was thinking about the distance line, because my favourite trout river is quite large, something around 50-60 meters. It often is a windy place, so I thought it'd help getting distance in such conditions, besides improving my casting technique...
@Viktor4386 I'd call it an aerial Snap - T, It's the same set of moves. In this case you don't let the full line settle after the snap (then on to form a D-Loop) You simply move the rod back in concert with the line to form the D-Loop without pausing. You really miss out a step by making the move continuous from snap to D-loop then out again.
Truly a science but seems so much more natural than spincasting seems to give the proper presentation and natural bait the trout seem to desire instinctly .Ive have little to know experience fly fishing but my son has many hours. I think i mgoing to add it to my fishing resume. thank you Bennett Springs Mo is our favorite.
@browntrout54 Thanks. I'll occasionally use a poly leader if I need a sink tip or perhaps if it's very windy and I need to turn over a big fly - but not often
@Bumcast thanks Carl. Pretty much the same as me. i tend just to use the polyleaders for salmon fishing with the double handed rod. For trout it is all standard factory tapered leaders.
I do like your idea of the visible poly leader for demonstration/teaching purposes. I think i'll give that a try too.

reddog124674 7 months ago
@reddog124674 Well, that exactly what a roll cast should do - lift the line up of the water and lay it out in front of you.
A roll cast, performed and taught correctly should indeed lift the line.
