Noooooooooooooo!! The negativity surrounding Down syndrome has got to stop. Our society has an unfounded fear of Down syndrome based on myths and outdated information. Correcte statements: DS should NOT be a heartbreaking diagnosis. Hopes & dreams do not have to be shattered. People with DS CAN have normal IQ! And can live independently! Kids with DS are more like typical kids than they are different. DS is not the horrible thing portrayed here.
My DS son was born 33 years ago, I was 20 years old. The medical and genetic staff tried to trick me into signing papers to place him in an institution. They treated him like an alien...and I published the story! The journals I kept of mistreatment by medical and ordinary people in public, I published. My son works everyday, pays taxes, lives in a private apartment and laughs! I raised him to believe nothing was wrong with him, just the rest of the world. He also has autism.
