if you press the pedal hard enough to engage the clutch it will slip, and wear down very fast.
also if the stick is in the front position and you drag it backwards with your arm, it will apply force on the shifting mechanism, adding friction and wear.

It's a bad habit to have one hand on the wheel and one hand on the stick. Look at GT1 racing. They only place their hands on the stick when necessary. If emergencies happen, your hands should be on the WHEEL first, not the stick. Corrections come before downshifting!

Starting when in gear will not stall the engine. The engine has to be already running to stall it. It will make the car jump forward or backward.

Starting in neutral with the clutch pushed in gives you the safest situation - if you forget to push the clutch, the transmission is still only in neutral - no harm done.
