This is just amazing. They were truly amazing. So young, so raw, so idealistic, it's beautiful watching it happen. The days when U2 meant everything in the world to me--not too much now. You grow up, they grow up...it's rather sad. But thanks for the best damn memories ever!
When I moved from Philadelphia PA to Miami FL (1985 right out of HS) the entire catalog Boy to Unforgetable Fire (at that time) got me through the entire ordeal
I was there the year after [83]. Same place front row. Here was the program : The Scabs, Warren Zevon, John Cale, Eurythmics, Simple Minds, U2, Peter Gabriel, Van Morrison. At a moment, for one song, Bono invited Annie Lennox and Jim Kerr. Great souvenir !!
I love them. Their music puts me in such a sonic place-nobody will ever replace them. They're one of a kind. I love Edge-his guitar playing is full of soul.
Talk about a band brimming with self-confidence that what they were doing was righteous. And unlike so many others, they were correct. The power and the glory is on full display here and barely contained. So much more uplifting than any religion - and although they identified themselves as Christians, they went to great lengths to say that they had much more in common with those still trying to find Jesus in their lives, and that is honest. It's real, and I feel the same way.
a band way ahead of their time even then wow ive never seen these clips from the early 80s they still have the same intensity as they did then. its nice to see a band whose music transcends the trends of their own time and always remains relevant.
the people giving edge his other guitars for the other songs look like they want to do something else. nowadays the guys who change the guitars are happy there doing that job
Ok, as a measure of talent: how about songs such as "Moment of Surrender", "City of Blinding Lights", "Beautiful Day", "Stuck in a Moment"- all evidence that U2 are just as amazing as ever. And you're right, concert attendence means nothing; but I think 7 million people who spent $800 million in the greatest economic downturn in 80 years would disagree with you. Typical 80's U2 bias bullshit. Next time, at least come up with an authentic way to bash the band, please. :-)
@Swissbanker77 Erm... I was a U2 fan way before you were even an embryo mate. :-) I know it might be hard for you, but try and accept that not everyone happens to have the same opinion as you. Having seen U2 more times than you have possibly been laid, I think I can make up my mind in terms of how good their recent stuff is and how good they are live these days. Try not to take things quite so personally. It's just OPINIONS...So relax and go listen to your favourite U2 song. :-)
@Nigelxman I don't get it, you're trying to prove that you're old? Good for you! Sure, opinions are opinions. But "they're not quite so amazing now" sounds more like a fact. Oh, and nothing I said indicates I took it personally. But in talking about making it personal, by bringing my ability to get laid in a discussion about U2, it just goes to show how insecure you are about that aspect of your life. I wouldn't be surprised if you've seen more U2 shows than the # of times you've been laid.
@Swissbanker77 Honestly, to mention such a vapid, shallow, trite song as Beautiful Day as evidence for the enduring talent of the band (on the contrary, it actually marks the lowest point of their career) fatally weakens your whole reckoning (the grossing/selling data don't help neither). 1980-1992, i.e. from Boy to Achtung Baby, one of best band ever. Sometimes I get high and I'm prone to think THE BEST ever. After Berlin Bono became the joke he still is and the music went sorrowful.
@sunshag1 Whatever dude. You sound like a small breed of "ex-U2 fans" who enjoy shitting over their recent stuff while anointing their 80s music. Sure, Achtung Baby and Joshua Tree are greater than their new stuff, but there isn't nearly as wide a discrepancy as you make it out to be. It's just a load of noise making and drama on your part.
@sunshag1 And then you condescendingly disregard any hint that shows how amazing the band still is, because it disproves whatever you say. No other act in the world, besides the Stones, could have pulled off what U2 did with 360. It's certainly significant. And Beautiful Day has stood the test of time. Not only was it huge when it came out, but it still is 11 years later. Most songs don't survive that long. Of course, you'll brush it off as insignificant because it disproves your whole argument.
@Swissbanker77 Please relax fellow, I don't enjoy at all shitting on artists I used to adore and I still enjoy the best records of the band (do you?) of the band. I just think that at some point they started to do bad music and ugly shows. In my opinion, which cannot be disproved being strictly tied to my personal taste, Beautiful Day pretty much summarize the overall downfall of the band, despite being "huge" (by that I guess you are back to selling and cashing, don't you). Ciao.
These were the the songs of U2 in the early 80ties that make me love this band in those days next to the metals bands as a metalfan (Maiden, Anthrax, Metallica, Motorhead ect.) The Energy (Rebels)
What's amazing is that their version of "Out of Control" from the Elevation tour at Slane Castle is actually better than this fantastic version. Still Rocking!
Argh! I used to have this whole concert on video that I recorded off the TV back in the 80s. I used to watch it literally every dayfor about a year! Ah - good memories, back in the Boy era and several years until Bono disappeared up his own Ego on The Joshua Tree.
I love Bono's dancing at the beginning xD
