I remember once when I was camping I got up early in the morning to relieve myself. As I walked out from under the tarp, I heard a call very similar to this and I turned in its direction to find a bird of some sort flying back and forth between a few trees. Suddenly it dove for my face, but I was able to duck and avoid it. I then watched it land and then quickly turn its head to look at me. From the shape of the silhouette, I could tell it was an owl. I think it was an Eastern Screech Owl.

I read in a book that some of their calls can be quite creepy. Is this true? I've never heard one, the only owl I've heard is a barred owl.

@redrobbietv The barred owl can make some demonic sounds, especially when there's two of 'em. When there's two of them, together they sound like some kind of demon, it's really freaky especially if you don't know what that sound is and you hear it..

Due to some recent experiences, i have really grown fond of these owls. I have one that lives near me and it sits in a tree on my property from time to time. I find myself going outside more at night to sit on my back porch hoping it shows up.

in st. louis theres an eastern screech owl named frazzle. They found him in a nest after his parents were killed. He would have been released back in the wild after he grew up but he got an eye infection so bad they had to REMOVE that eye so now he's one of the residents of the bird sanctuary. It was love at first sight when i saw him and i guess its the same way for him cause the workers there said hes the happiest theyve ever seen him when he sees me he is such a sweetie I LOVE YOU FRAZZLE!!!!

Once I was walking around the woods in the early dawn hours. The the sky just started to turn deep blue from the rising sun, and everything was still in silhouettes and shadows. I heard this really strange bird call, and I turned to see some sort of bird flying back and forth between two trees. Suddenly the bird dove for my head, and I ducked just in time to avoid it. I turned around to see where it went, and it perched in a nearby tree and stared at me. It was an Eastern Screech Owl.

It is probably being rehabilitated and will be re-released into the wild when it gets better. Either that or it can't be re-released and is used for educational purposes.

owls are not pets...as a rehaber of owls it is wrong to try to keep them as pets.i rehab them and release them back to the wild..so they can live free and not in a cage.

Yes, but if a bird can not be re-released, such as this one, why not keep it to use as an educational representative of its species? This way we can learn more about the birds and also about how to best treat and then release them, if possible.

yes your right and i do that as well...but there are some owls that wildlife dept. order me to put down and if i don't i will lose my license. i have an eagle 2 redtails 1 snowy owl, 5 kestrels, great grey owl, 2 nothern saw whet owls and my educational barn owl.
