Well, that's a long story. I feel quite nerdy knowing all this, but ok.
She's dutch, but born in England, lived in Indonesia for several years and then lived in Guinnee Bissau, which is in Africa, where she learned french on an international school. When she was about 9 years old she went back to The Netherlands. So you know now! :-)
I don't like Wende Snijders' style at all, but this seems to be the only Brel song that suits her singing style. So this is okay. Brel is still 1000 times better, obviously.
Before you start judging her. Go to a live concert of her. She is one of the performers that will grab you by the throat and will not let you go before she is ready with you. She is not Brel, no she is Wende Snijders. But like him she lives threw each and every song she sings. The one time I saw her live I forgot all about the Brel version. Live it is is just you and her. She makes it very personal.
Btw she lived in Guinea Bissau not Senegal. She calls French the language of her childhood
she knows what she's singing she lived in sengal for a couple of years i thought. and the explanation she gave for singing this song is that the whole world is a brothel in a way
I'd rather have Brel sing it. I'm not sure if she knows exactly what she's singing, though Mister Prinsen's explanation makes it sound convincing.
Why do you wonder whether she knows what she's singing? Do you wonder whether Brel, or any other singer of this song, knows what he's singing? is it because she's a woman (and you believe only men can understand men) or because she's not French (and you believe only the French can understand French)?
lol just cause you can state a couple artists that did covers it doesnt mean you have an arguement. youre just hoping i dont know what youre talking about... and what i am saying is that you cant fully understand some one else's thoughts, and therefore can't possibly express yourself the same way, than anyone else never mind those foreing or with a different sex, (if you dont get my point... look at your hand, now try to be your hand...you can't! And it the same for humans)but they CAN make good
Yes, I have an argument, and I will explain it for you. The argument is that songwriters do not necessarily make the best or the 'only true' performers of their songs. And no, I do not hope that you don't know what you're talking about. And no, this argument is not about if one can understand someone else's thoughts (we agree on that). And finally, I think I have refuted your idea that "la personne qui a ecris sa chanson peuvre vraiment l'interpretter" since 'vraiment' has no absolute meaning.
I wish i could break out the dutch but english and french is all i have. but anyways i suppose it depends how you interpret vraiment, what I meant was that she can't interpret it how brel wanted to, because we can assume that he wanted to talk about a boy's loss of innocence, maybe not though, and then you can look at what emotions he put behind each words and why. Of course mrs. Snijders didn't do that and it would be down to speculations if she
did...It would be silly for her to. Now if by vraiment you mean that she put her own feelings and reason behind saying each word the that she does, I think does just that, and that I agree with you :)... i think you made my youtube german lol
visiting a brothel with a group of fellow soldiers can not by any stretch of the imagination be a woman's experience
the fact that a woman is singing a song that is written from a man's point of view is no problem to me, but apparently to wende it is: she changed the lyrics from "chaque femme" to "chaque homme".
that makes no sense. it's even more distracting than her bad acting. once she really starts to sing (in the final verse) these flaws disappear. that part is breathtaking.

I love it!! As Ella Fitzgerald said, "Never heard a girl sing it before". She was talking about 'Mack the Knife' (Die Moritat von Mackie Messer)

Hildegard Knef did that, amazingly well. Ella said something like: "The great singer without a voice"

I like the fact that you can see she knows what the lyrics are about.
Her face shows so much expression while she's singing. Something that is missed with a whole lot of other singers.
Respect Wende.

Wende outdoes Brel here in a way that would have made Derrida (and his deconstructivism) smile. Quelle femme, quelle femme!

Her name doesn't look french at all
But she's got a perfect french pronounciation ,
so I'm kinda confused lol ..
What's her origins ?
Anyway I like this version ,
Well done . =]

Schubert was not an exceptional piano player. Do you think that no one can play Schubert's piano sonatas better than poor Schubert himself?
Do you think Charles Dumont and Mack David could sing 'Je ne regrette rien' and 'La vie en rose' better than Edith Piaf - just because they wrote it?
Is any version of "Windmills of your mind" by Michel Legrand better than by Mireille Matthieu, Noel Harrison's or ?
Can Benny & Bjorn sing ABBA songs better than Agnetha & Frida?
You must be kidding.
