  • nickelby68...Facts....minkyroo is talking about the 1973 ad called 'NORTHERN' which was filmed on Exchange St, Colne. complete with the butcher, Richard Laycock, working outside his own shop. He was our family butcher. The ad you're talking about is the 1974 ad called 'Bike Ride', filmed in Dorset. So get back in the water, you're wrong! Google that one.

ScouseFiles...if you want to speak 'Lanky Twang' CORRECTLY may I suggest a booklet of that name for you to study.'F' word not used minky!!!!

  • Minkyroo....you are the arsehole of the north not Keighley.

Colne is certainly not what it should be but that's due to bad planning and the fact that we allow cretins like you to drink in what is probably the worst pub we have in Colne....but let's face it...like attracts like, so you and your mate should have felt at home there with (or without) the dog shit under the pool table...which I do not believe for one instant....no self respecting dog would go in that pub.

  • Hey up lad! No GMO inth our day. Eee, by gum! Chuck another mattress on the fire there our luv.

  • Utterly brilliant!

  • A Yorkshire advert filmed in fukin Lancashire. Colne is a shit hole. It's the most depressing inbred dump I've ever had the misfortune to step foot into. People refer to keighley as the arsehole of the north. Well at least keighley is in Yorkshire and it's heaven compared to to fucking colne. I went for a drink with a mate of mine in colne. His local was the derbys arms. There was a lump of dog shit under the pool table and my mate said it was there a week later. What a dump.

  • @minkyroo Blown well and truely out of the water, the ad was filmed on Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, Dorset. I know this as it's where I was born.

Any doubt about that fact then just google it for confirmation.

  • that was really lovely thanks!

dont watch if you are feeling homesick..!

  • Good auld Hovis, much better than that poncy Kingsmill...

  • can't understand shit but nice ad's

  • The war referred to in the "Northern" ad must be the First World War or maybe the Boer War. Certainly not the Second World War.

  • i like the hovis advert were the boy is running through time, it's in my opinion the best advert.

  • hard in them days but nicer than today.

  • is it still as good for you today as its always been?

  • lol they don't have ads like this any more, this one actually makes sense unlike today, wanna buy some milk, well watch this ad of a monkey climbimg a tree chewing a toffee.... milk

  • ridley scott directed the second advert bike ride

  • I live in the third house down in the first advert!

  • Oh for the days when the simple things in life kept us happy: family life, licorice, a few kippers and some butter!

No Xbox and cosmetic surgery then.

  • strewth, i can remember that advert being made - its on exchange Street in Colne lancashire - so much for the Geordie accents! we once had to deliver meals on wheels down that street, in the snow!

  • wli

    so do i

i was at school[park] and remember seeing the bbc lorries at the top of the street [between the town hall and barcleys]and we all wondered what was going on

by the time it was aired we had move to solihull and i used to bore everyone to death telling them, that's where i' m from

  • I think that was a filming of a bank robbery @ barclays for something like juliet bravo

  • this was '72[ish?]

    bit early for juliet bravo

  • i saw it on Street View, the street looks incredibly dull now.

  • Pity days when you could trust anyone to take a kid home have long gone. And thats called progress, go figure.

  • These commercials did not jog any of my memory because I was not familiar with them but I certainly think they are top notch.*****.

  • The third Hovis spot Runaway was directed by Tony Scott while Ridley left to make the Duelists.

  • Close my eyes and i'm back who needs a Tardis. Inspired.

  • I know what you mean, many memories came flooding back...

  • awesome...:)

  • Absolutely fantastic, thanks for sharing...

  • Lovely classics adverts!

  • I remember all of these adverts lol

    The new ad is brilliant!

  • Great stuff. The north is the heart and soul of England!

  • this ad is as good as it allways been.

  • there's 2 hills 1 to flog to the southerners and 1 for the north real butta

  • it's a cor anglais - i love it!!!

  • what instruments did they use..??

  • i can say for certan that the first ad was filmed in colne lancashire the street is called exchange st the mill in the back was haslams people in colne prob no it as jhon cottons. i walk up this street every day .

  • From the 1970s, when there was a future in nostalgia. The bike ride advert is still shown today because it was directed by an unknown young man called Ridley Scott. I think though these adverts, classics though they were, had their day and Hovis were quite right to switch to a more 21st century image. I still recommend Hovis. Makes great sandwiches.

  • Wow this takes me back wot great adverts and we were lucky damn lucky!!!!!!

  • Apparantly the kid on the bike is now in the London fire brigade.

  • Didnt you read the earier comments. Its not yorkshire at all. It's a place called Gold Hill, in Shaftesbury, Dorset

  • Its funny how yorkshire still looks the same on this advert - its still the 3 rd world - i presume this is one of the upmarket areas of leeds shown on the advert?

  • "And mam got some dirt for us 'uns to eat, good proper dirt, no fancy stuff, we too humble for that."

  • What song is used on the adverts?

  • It's from Dvorák's "New World" Symphony.

  • Dvoraks New world Symph. 2nd movement part 1 - it's posted on youtube somewhere... enjoy

  • this street is called exchange st i live a few steets on from it its in colne lancs the mill in background is called haslams

  • That hill featured in the first two adverts is actually in Dorset!

  • Eee, it were right grand when I were a lad!

  • fuck me its grim up north!

  • Isn't Brian Murphy (George & Mildred) in the first ad?

Ridley Scott directed the second ad, which has a VO by Ian Holm.
