Also keep in mind you're comparing the Marineland 100 to an Aquaclear 50. The 50 has 2x the flow rate of 100 (est 200gph vs 100gph). The blue filter floss is designed to polish fine particulate matter and will clog if the tank is overstocked. Just remember on the "bio wheel" filters that with the use of media bags additional media can be place behind the foam screen such as bioballs. This makes the bio wheel largely irrelevant, however I run both Marineland (bio wheel) and Aquaclears with great success.
