  • it might have been a little bit better world if dave took over at 1130 days later ..

  • Carson was NOT forced out. he stated that he didn't want to become repetitive and stale and it was the right time to go. he left on his own terms. if he'd asked for a huge pay raise to stay another five years, nbc would've given it to him immediately, no questions asked and regardless of what leno or his manager thought about it.

  • noooo I want more!! LOL thanks for posting this!

  • Is that Clint Eastwood next to Letterman?

  • David Letterman, Johnny Carson, Conan O'Brien.

Name 3 people screwed by NBC and Jay Leno.

  • is there a part 3?

  • truly classic letterman

  • to bad he is never this funny on his own show

  • @ArtisanTony your not supposed to be that funny when your interviewing the guest. look at carson.

  • Wish I could tell stories like David Letterman!

  • "Think we'll see any flying saucers?"

  • "Kind of a rolling laugh" haha

  • Now Leno has backstabbed his way into taking over the tonight show twice, once after Carson and once for Conan O'Brien.

  • hahahahah a must see interview hahahaha

  • Say what you want about Letterman as a late night host or and interviewer, but you can't deny that he is a really entertaining story teller. This is not just evident in this interview, but also in his own show throughout the years.

  • Carson loved Dave...Carson continually wrote Dave jokes to Dave until the day of his death.....ever thought that Carson may have called Dave junior because he was insecure and wanted to throw his weight around?? Lets face it at this time Dave was mass America

  • He called him 'Junior' @ 3:25 ? Is that a Johnny Carson thing or is that a true display of the Carson and Letterman dynamic.

  • eqsmooth first off, i am not sure why you would judge a comedian on whether there republicain or democrat, and second i am not convinced that he is a right winger. ya he had rush limbaugh on his show, but he also had rachel maddow, yes he had mccain, but he also had obama, some people have grown the fuck up and can at the very least allow the other side to speak. the argument about big and small government has been around since 1776, and ahhh, i still dont see what this has to do with anything

  • i think jay is nice guy and cool..just not good host of tonight show...imagine how big and awesome the tonight show wouold have continued to be and cbs and abc would still be fumblin thru failed hosts.if dave took over! i hate paul sshaffer tho..he was kinda cool back in the early days but in my opinion he should been sacked long ago.but hes daves buddy..so hes still there!

  • this was when tv was great!!!! too bad johnny was replaced by a dick!!!!

  • I found out what a prick Leno is when he took over the Tonight show. No respect for Carson at all. And how his manager helped force Carson out.

  • @SuburbanDon I agree but i have to say...nobody had the power or authority to force Carson to do anything....Carson was the man above anybody in comedy

  • @SuburbanDon I can't help but wonder just how much Leno's manager had to do with it. He waited until she was dead to push the blame on her. Plus he has no manager now but he still managed to screw Conan over pretty well.

  • Dave rarely delivers things that really sound like jokes and this is so hilarious.. he's awesome.

  • Now, THESE guys were worth staying up for.

  • I wish someone would post the part after we'll be right back", he asks Dave if he is going to be out here long, Dave says, "nah, gonna drop the audition tape off over at CBS and Im outta here".

  • David Letterman and johnny Carson always had a strong relationship something that jay Leno will never have : ) !!!!! +1

Carson will always choose Letterman over Leno for the TONIGHT SHOW +1

    Fuck Leno +1

  • This right here is precisely why youtube is great.

  • yeah i know when it was ... just liked him way better back in the beginning, before he went to CBS

  • How good he "used to be" ???? Dave still rocks.

  • I had forgotten how great Letterman used to be, back in the 80s.

  • This is 1992 not the 80s. In the 80s he was kind of shy and quiet, very different from the Dave in this clip. Dave funniest period was clearly from around late 1990 to 1996

  • I think Dave personally has always been kind of quiet and shy, but he developed a different persona for "on air". I agree with your comment above, but I'd include Late Night years in the latter 80's in his "funniest period". I used to love the bizarre yet simple stuff he did - "Shame of the City", where he walked around pointing out mispelled signage; or another time when he handed out hot towels to everyone who got off the elevators at Rockefeller Center. Brilliant in an off-the-wall way.

  • I wasn't a fan of David Letterman until I saw this! Good stuff.

  • dave is very entertaining guest..I hope conan invites him on the tonight show

  • WOW, Dave is really interesting to watch as guest. I mean look at him - he's on fire

  • someone gave eastwood a heavy dose of morphine.

  • I think on these nights, when Dave was energized, no one can touch him

  • Dave was to get the spot of where Jay Leno is now hosting the Tonight Show but NBC execs gave Dave the Shaft and gave it to Jay instead.

  • And that's Jay Leno's fault because he held a gun to the execs heads. Valid point.

  • lol

  • It's Jay's "fault" because he and his manager connived at getting Johnny Carson forcibly "retired" before he was really ready (and the same thing came back to bite Jay's butt year's later) and because he did everything he could to finagle the gig away from his supposed "buddy" Dave Letterman. Who had helped push Leno's career enormously by repeated exposure on Late Night, BEFORE he started getting Tonight Show gigs. Leno's "nice guy" aura has always struck me as hugely fake.

  • leno dont have a manager get your facts rite

  • The reference was to Helen Kushnik, listed in sources as either Leno's agent or manager from early in his career until 1992. NBC fired her as executive producer of The Tonight Show four months after Leno took over, purportedly because of her strong-arm tactics (banning guests who dared to appear on competing Arsenio Hall show) and angry tirades. Altho she had guided Jay's career for 17 years, once NBC fired her, he distanced himself. I've no idea whether he "don't have a manager" now or not.

  • Leno got the job because studio execs will always pick a barely-competent pushover like Leno over a brilliant wildcard like Dave.

Leno was asked what the most memorable moment on his show was, and he picked Angie Harmon getting proposed by her footballer boyfriend. If that's the best that ever happened on your show, your show was shit.

  • yeah sadly the majority of people don't think so.

  • johnny called dave junior!

  • "tapeworm" lololololo

  • JC was the perfect host, let his guests be the stars...

  • Exactly. Leno would never let a guest get through a story like that. Jay always needs to be the star.

  • He even did that last night to the President of the United States of all people.

  • I'm sure Dave wishes all his guests were as funny as

    as he is, Great stuff.

  • Like a tourist waiting for Old Faithful, do I have time to go get the camera?

That is COMEDY at it's finest!!!

  • I can honestly state that I was watching Johnny that night.

I lost it. Dave was on his game.

The exchange between Dave and Clint was cool (in part 1).

The discussion of Bob, to this day, still cracks me up.

  • Dave is second only to Carson.

  • Probably. As much as I love Conan, I think as far as encompassing that mature, charming, confident late night presence, Dave does it better.

Although, as far as raw comedic talent goes, Conan has them both beat by a mile, IMO. But, as the image of the patriarchal host, Dave and Johnny better round out the job.

  • meh conan is an old hat. you can watch a show from five years ago and a show from today and he's still doing the same jokes, night in and night out. he's a dork.

i watch him occasionally, prefer him over leno, but conan relies on being "zany". not to mention he has some of the best writers around, as was made evident by conans awful run during the strike.

  • COnan reminds me of old Steve Martin. I like him a lot but Dave is still my fav.

  • Couldn't have said it better myself.

  • Did I just read "prostituto" there? Naughty naughty...

  • Love it when Johnny calls Dave Junior, he does so just after the fellow airplane passenger laugh.

    3:25

    What a cute nickname :)

(Junior as in junior varsity letter recipients of a Letterman jacket)

  • Dave knows how to handle himself, I tell ya. He's THE BEST! Just seeing him next to Carson, his idle, again is so cool!

    Awesome!!

  • he is the best storyteller, I swear. Always hilarious no matter what the story.

  • dave and carson are the best hosts of all time (maybe along with ed sullivan).

  • I'm dying here.

I do remember that show, especially the Comedy Store reference (where's the bathroom, punk?).

    Classic Dave.

  • Why are you talking about tacos and chicken meat on a David Letterman and Johnny Carson clip for?

  • Where's part three?

  • Awesome - Dave rocks... can't get better than Johnny and Dave. I'll be posting a video soon of Dave on Carson from 1990.

  • Letterman is a genius!

  • leno sucks

  • A big one.

  • Letterman is so damn funny! It's no secret that he writes a lot of the funniest stuff on The Late Show.

  • Two masters at work... Letterman obviously loves Carson.

  • And Johnny's affection for Dave is also apparent here.

  • That was a CLASSIC!
