@FrancisBerryman You are completely correct, but just as with, e.g. the Somme 1916, popular imagery and legend takes over and the historical reality is ignored because simple people want simple stories they can interpret and process. Having to consider non self-justifying or complex factors is way beyond a lot of people's comprehension. The US revolution was, as my tutor at uni always said, "a crisis of integration not disintergration" - they fought Britain for their own british values.

The Boers saw to the end of the Red Coats - The British Soldiers made a fine target in their bright red coats and the two white bands meeting over the middle chest were perfect for aiming at!! Some soldiers were disciplined for rolling in the dirt and taking their sashes off!

@jonjamg Sorry not being offensive mate ,but if you read you will find that the redcoat had been phased out 15 years earlier in 1885.The last battle fought in redcoats was a battle in the relief of khartoum that year.By the time of the start of the Boer War they had been wearing khaki uniforms for 14 years.

Yea, If you ask Americans about Veitnam, he will most likely say 'We won More Battles' and turn it around saying it was a 'Political Loss'. Yet, Americans are Quick to say that they won 1777 and 1812, But, if you look at it. its in the same Boat, It has more Political Losses than actual Battles lost. In fact, the Redcoats faired in that Campaign, with a Sail of 2 months from Home, And Victorious against the Odds.

@HabboTeck you know nothing of the Scotts, they have always been regarded as tough infantry. Countless battles have been won in British army history by the Scottish companies and battalians standing firm. Even today 70% of the SAS are Scottish.

You only have to read about the 74th at Assaye.

@laodongICY - Its not the fact that they were outnumbered, it's the fact that they stood firm despite being torn appart by canister and volley after volley. They refused to retreat in face of certain death and they held on long enough for the cavalry to form a screen.

And just because English speaking nations are some of the wealthiest doesn't make them superior in being. China is rich. The Saudis and the Emirates are rich.
