In fact, I would argue that rich people giving a percentage of their income to charity are doing more good than lower class people giving the same percent to charity, simply because the rich person would be donating more dollars than the poorer one. It won´t significantly fix the budget, but helps to calm down certain people who believe in class warfare. The real way in Europe (an alleged social role model for many US liberals) to cut the deficit is raising indirect taxes (20-25% VAT, gasoline, etc) and cut welfare spending. There´s no other way.

Paying more taxes for what? To keep wasting on stupid things like wars? Paying the interests on the money the Chinese lend? The problem is that governments spends more than what comes in. Bureaucrats are inept and incompetent. Not ALL the money the “rich” have is enough to pay for the 2 trillion in debt Bush left nor the 4 trillion Obama has so far. Buffet: give ALL your money to Gov, then lecture.

Exactly and taxing the rich more will balance these spends. Even if it isn't enough, it's still 'something'. Hell, both warren and greenberg are awesome for saying this out loud. It won't get rid of the trillions of debt; that would be a long term thing. No way in hell are you able to get rid of the debt by simply raising the taxes on the rich. But it's a start of a different voice and it's a much needed one

@Shangori But how about spending less? How about spending only on important things? How about spending only what you have at hand? There is no amount of money enough, that will cover all that is "needed" at the hands of bureacrats. Raising taxes by increasing the % people currently pay only decreases the total taxes collected. The Laffer curve explains it best.

@groovyengineer EVERYONE!!!!! EVERYONE!!!!! that is why I believe in a low rate - flat tax for everyone. 15% for everyone, but for that the US needs to stop bleeding money by being involved in 6 wars, closing all military bases all over the world, social security needs to be privatized, etc.

If the Dems want to cut on defense: why is the US engaged in 6 wars? how many bases has Obama closed? not even Guantanamo!!!! How much money is being wasted in the middle east? could that money be better used in the US? I NEVER said the Us should not honor its debt. The chinese lent the money, they need to get it back. But borrowing money to stay in Irak & Afganistan is ludicrous.

Perhaps it's because the Republicans vote as a solid block that you can't fathom the concept of two different members of a party voting differently. Why is the U.S. engaged in 2 wars? Because the Republicans keep voting for it! You're trying to blame all of the Republicans' wrongdoings on the Democrats.

@lapiz1969 Obama is not a dictator, he cannot single-handedly close bases, and if he tried, it would be a hard battle with the Republicans, who've taken it as their sole objective to oppose anything and everything Obama may want to do. Everything Obama has tried to do, the Republican party has thrown all of their weight into obstructing it. It doesn't matter if it's a middle-of-the-road, even conservative position, if it's Obama doing it, they fight it tooth and nail.

If he wanted to close bases, end wars, etc. He was able..... but he did not want or even worse (he can´t say no to his corporate masters, as some conspiranoids believe) The ones that can´t do shit are in the opposition, not the ones ruling or with a majority. then again, most people in the US want to end the wars, yet politicians do not deliver. @lapiz1969 Yeah, they had a little more control for a brief period which is simply not enough time for the drastic changes you may have been hoping for. Obama was never able to single-handedly close a base. Again, he is a president, not a king, he cannot simply decree that a base be closed.

You listed paying our debt and its interest as an example of the "stupid things" that it would be "wasted" on. Which is it? Do we pay our debt to china or would that be a "waste?" You can't have it both ways. If you're against both borrowing money and raising it through taxes, where do you think the money is going to come from? Heaven?

@yerk3 I never said the US should not honor its debt. My critique goes against Buffet´s idea. I said clearly that even if you tax 100% the money of the rich, there isn´t enough. Please read carefully what I wrote. I said more taxes to pay on interests is stupid. When you are out of work, credit card bills piling up, the solution is not to get another card, you stop wasting money, you stop spending.... like the 6 wars for example, closing all the military bases outside the US would be nice too.

@lapiz1969 While some of your statements are factually correct, you are missing the point. Democrats are not proposing, and have never proposed, balancing the budget through only tax increases on the rich. That has never happened.
What is being proposed is to raise the taxes on the rich to avoid gigantic cuts in important social programs. So basically Democrats want to balance the budget MOSTLY with spending cuts. Republicans want to balance the budget ONLY with spending cuts.

@yerk3 because of history. Politicians always go for psicological ramblings of class, race, income, etc to manipulate. They want to tax ALL the super "rich" but when they do, it will be everyone making over $250,000 a year. In my view: there should be a low rate- flat tax for EVERYONE because I believe in justice and fairness. Still, Take ALL the money of the super rich, and the debt & deficit won´t chance much. You already owe almost $200,000. and the super rich can´t cover it all.
