How could Castro do it? It is the result of your own activities that gives him the power. If you had worked for peace and understanding, worked to better the lives of cubans rather than trying to crush them all these years, blow up airliners, poison their crops, all kinds of weird, evil, sick stuff, then things would be very different. Fidel figured out how to turn US hatred into strength and longevity for himself. He knows as long as the US continues the embargo, he or his brother will be able to stay in power. Stop the embargo, and Castro will be gone very quickly because there is no longer a reason for his existence. He will no longer have a bad guy to point to when there are problems. In fact, Castro wants the embargo to continue. What a joke on Florida Cubans that they could never figure this out.

Although the embargo has been established by the U.S., U.S. support is still given monetarily to the island. Mishandling of those funds is plausible. The reluctance in embracing capitalism is what's causing the Cuban economy to suffer. When you have a communist state that runs everything, all the way down to businesses, there is no real room for an economic boom. Where's the services really going to go? What money is the Cuban populace really spending to stimulate the economy?

If the US had left Cuba alone, they would have evolved a beter government. Because of the assasination attempts, the sabotage, the economic embargo, etc etc. any time there is trouble in Cuba, Fidel can point to the US. Attack Cuba, and threaten attack, then Fidel can put Cuba on a constant war footing and take away peoples rights, and nobody question because they know it is a matter of national survival.
