thank you so much, i had no clue that you can shave agenst the grain... and sugar my baby girl doesnt like the sound of the shaver so she is very tense i hardly ever do around her face or ears properly...
I have a question about the "cocker crown". I'm learning how to shave show cockers and was wondering about the different style of crown. you used a cresent moon and i'm not sure if a difference in the cut effects the dogs grading. My boss uses a different style than this and i'm more comfortable with this style but am afraid that i may upset him. Does it matter or is it irrelevant at shows?
@celt309 This is a PET Cocker trim, if you are doing it for a show then stick to what your teacher has taught you.. I stress that this is NOT a show trim by any means ;) Good luck at the show though!!! :)
I have two cockers (english) and it cost me £60 / $97 for them grooming (clip, bath, shampoo) but I think it may be wise to purchase an Andis clipper with free #10 blade.
THAT DOG IS SOOOOOOOO CUTE!!!! I WALK MY OWNERS COCKER SPANIEL CUZ HES OWNER IS GETTING OLD!!! PLUS THE DOG RAN AWAY FROM HIM AND I FOUND HIM!!! IM SAVING UP SO I CAN TAKE THAT POOR DOG FOR A HAIR CUT!!! BLESS UR DOGS!!! <3!!
What a darling dog to sit through grooming :-) I've always wanted to know how my dog was groomed ... but I can't watch as my dog would get to wiggly.
Thanks SO much for posting these videos. I tried to give my 6 month old puppy Demi a cut today with no former instruction and pretty much butchered her :/ I somehow thought that I could just use a clippers on everything...yeah, it's gonna take a little for this to look good again. I did fix it up a little with the scissors, but it's pretty bad. So...thanks VERY much for posting these videos!
do u think u can help me ? cause i really want a puppy and i' m trying to find out what's the difference between american and english cocker spaniel . i'm not sure but i think that american is smaller am i right? i need a small dog to be honest cause it will be my first one , someone also told me that the black one is more wild than the gold
it's unbelievable your dog..first of all is beautiful!!! but i cant understand how can he stay still without moving or try to bite it . i thought he would be afraid of the sound . i want the same dog.. but i don't know what to do when to buy one cause i don't have kids yet and some people say that some dogs depend on their personality they can be jealous when a baby comes home
@NiNaNina86gr Thank you! :) I have four dogs, and I just had a baby last June. All of them are doing well except one of my Cockers... he is and always has been pretty cranky. He is the same now, he's not extra jealous or aggressive... just his same old self. He likes the baby, but from a distance. I would just suggest that no matter when you get a dog no matter the breed, please research and invest in some good basic obedience training while the dog is young!! It sure makes a difference! :)
@cutelucylulu it will just take time, you will have to try to make it pleasurable but not fun. This will be hard to do, you need to act really calm, and when she gets excited just ignore her til she calms down. You could use treats if she doesn't get extra excited about food... I know one of mine does so I couldn't use food with him. I just had to calmly praise him and even give a gentle massage to relax thim at first to get him used to it. Hope this helps, good luck! :)
@bender1011001 Ha, did you see my other Cocker in the creative video? He has a mohawk and ROCKS it! LOL Danny's had one before too but it just isn't him. My dogs are the same way with a lazer pointer!!! It cracks me up, mine let it go after about a few hours though... ;) Check out some of my video's from the park, Nugget one of my Cockers is sooo much fun at the creek/river! Cockers are great dogs, they were bred to flush Woods Cock out of the forrest for the gunman, hence "COCKER" Spaniel.
great video spanielmom..=)..im gonna have a cocker pup and ill name him fudge..and ur video is so much great help on how to groom a cocker..i love it..=)
@TheMeijerra You can cut them but if your careful you can easily avoid it. If you are just adopting a Cocker you may want to take him/her to the pro's for the first time or two just to see if your dog has any past baggage... some, alot, of Cockers have issues with being groomed. Either really scared and uncooperative or aggression in some cases both. It can be very difficult to groom a scared/aggressive Cocker, they are very smart too. If he/she checks out good at the groomer then give it a go!
wow how do you get your dogs coat so clean? i live in the dessert so she gets really dirty and how do u clean ears? i use a q-tip any other ways i should know about?
@sarinalol As far as the coat goes, I just use a good shampoo and scrub really good and rinse really good. When it comes to ears, you need to have a really good ear cleaner from a vet. I squeeze a good amount right out of the bottle into the ear and then rub the ear until I hear squishing noises. After that I either use a wash cloth or q-tip and try to remove as much of the debris as possible. Dogs ear cnals are shaped like L's, that is why I squeeze lots of ear cleaner in to get deep down.
@MyBentley12 my cocker bites the brush then when i give him baths he and use a hair dryier on low to dry him he growls at it hes funny he thinks hes tough! get one there onderful and loving and fun and adorable
hi spanielmom just wondering is your cocker english or americian because my cocker ears are shorter and doesnt have much of a crown as yours and also what razors do use and how much around?
@berniebop39 He is an American Cocker. I use Andis brand clippers and usually Andis blades too. Clippers run around $150.00 and blades run around $15-30 each. I have a video on clippers and blades too. Hope this helps. ;)
Hey spanielmom, I love your videos...I am groomer as well. I haven't had the pleasure of doing many cocker spaniels, Do you always use a #10 blade on the face? Can it ever be #7F ?
@Kvizzle Yes, you can use a 7, I use a 7 on the really thick coated dogs that only have thin whispy facial hair. But if they have thinner hair and lots of it I use a 10. ;) Good question.
@STACHELEK75 Depends alot on what kind of hair cut you are doing on your dog, if you are doing a Cocker cut like the video shows then you need to groom your dog about every 4-6 weeks with at least a weekly brushing if not daily. If you are clipping your dog down all over then you could wait a bit longer like 6-8 weeks. ;)
@0nlywords They can get long scraggly hairs on their nose and chin but they shouldn't get as hairy as say a Shih Tzu... Mine get really scruffy looking but I couldn't let them get a rounded face.. it just doesn't get that full. :)
@proudpinay97 You should get your cocker used to getting groomed as soon as possible, you don't have to clip him/her the first time you do a grooming session but it is good to get them used to the noises and vibrations of the clippers. I have found that when people don't start early with cockers they can be very difficult to groom later on. ;)
wowz i have a brown one and he would never act this clam unless hes been running around all day lol anyways i wanna know wat brand of clippers you used cuz they seen to work wonders and my dog has thick hair so he clogs tha clippers i have
You that are criticising this good lady's grooming - have you ever tried to groom a dog?!!! You haven't a clue... I consider myself a careful handler of a cocker while i am clipping, but when I watched a video of myself I was surprised how rough it looked - the camera is deceiving! You have to make positive, confident movements while grooming. Does this dog look unhappy? Thanks for putting up this informative video. (from a Cocker exhibitor and groomer of 40 years experience). cheers.
No probs, spanielmom,,, and of course you go against the grain wiv the clippers in the places you demonstrate, though I would use my no. 7f there on my show Englsih cockers for a longer effect. (as well as no. 7f with the grain, over the body),
@juan320guy No it is perfectly fine to cut a Dogs whiskers. I know this from experience and learning from the best groomers out there at grooming expos. But just to humor you I did google it and I found nowhere on the search where it is bad or not acceptable to shave a dogs face, including the whiskers. Cat's are however a different story. They have feeling in their whiskers and you NEVER want to cut or shave them. Dogs on the other hand don't have such nerve endings and they always grow back.;)
Some recommend not cutting against the grain, what is your source for doing so? Thank you for your post, I hope some of your viewers who complain about your technique will post how they do it. Cocker spaniels can matt so badly if not brushed and/or trimmed regularly. I still plan to buy the groomer's guide, but this is an excellent chance to see what I'm going to be getting myself into. :) Grooming horses is suddenly seeming easier...except for cleaning the stalls. /sigh
@chazandru I agree, for the body, I don't cut in reverse. But I have learned from some of the top "show" groomers to use a reverse on the certain areas I show you here, such as the ears, head, and neck. Thank you for you comment, I wish some of my "critics" would post their own vids too. ;) Good luck.
P.S. I recommend "Notes from the grooming table" by Mellissa Verplank and also
"The stone guide to grooming" by Ben Stone as far as grooming instructional books go. These are the books I used.
Poor little guy Danny, if this is you being nice, never seen a dog so roughly handled, and I have been in a few groomers. Ouch wouldnt let you near a Cocker of mine.
Thank goodness I am not your dog, poor little sod mauled around, could you be any rougher if you tried. Worked in many groomers never seen it done like this.
Thank you so much! You are amazing! I spent hours watching your videos! I have 2 Yorkies and a cocker spaniel and I have learned a lot. The best part is you dont charge for your videos. Your awesome!
I'd love to learn to groom my dogs myself but have tried a few times and it looked terrible. What kind of clippers do you use? What do you suggest as a need in every groomers kit? Besides clippers? What size blades? Shears? etc! I'd really appreciate it! Thanks!
Good demonstration. My Taffy looks just like Danny, and she needs a haircut - badly. But she's terrified of the hair dryer, and I've never tried a razor. We're going to take her to a groomer for the first cut - and she's already two years old, which I've learned recently is not good. She might be terrifed. Yet, we live in Las Vegas where it gets really hot, and she's gotten very, very fluffy and curly this year. Thanks for this "clip" (no pun intended).
yes um spanielmom93 im shaving my dog and i want to know if i should cut all of their eyebrow of or leave some. i think it might look funny if i do. plz reply!
@xXblackhawczXx The actual eyebrows do get shaved, you leave a bit on top called the cocker crown. I show you how to do this in the videos... their eyes are supposed to be very noticable and pronounced. ;) Hope this helps
Thank you for posting these videos ! I would LOVE to have a cocker spaniel but the required grooming is a bit daunting. I think if I got a cocker, I'd be able to groom him myself with your videos! :) Though, poor thing, it probably would look like a mess until I get the hang of the clippers!
I was wondering about the eyes... it looks like you run the clippers right over them, is that ok, or are you doing something around the eyes that I'm missing?
@msici Um.. I don't know who told you that but it is perfectly fine to cut a dogs whiskers... it's Cats you don't want to cut their whiskers... In fact show dogs ALWAYS get their whiskers cut off no matter the breed or coat type. ;) Sorry you were miss informed but yes I do cut the whiskers. ;)
I will NEVER pay a groomer again or cutting my dogs hair after watching this. Thank you so much for your help. Can you recommend a good clipper? I bought one from CVS and it works fine, but it makes my Cocker Spaniel's hair look like a freshly raked plot of farmland. Lines all over the place. He looks kind of like a stuffed animal as well.
Also, when shaving the face, is it bad to be shaving off the whiskers?
that you so much for this video! i have been paying for 2 english cockers to get groomed at petsmart for the last two years and I cant afford it anymore.... they charge 65-80$ for each dog!!!!!!
@ldanielle81 Wow that is a lot to pay for a grooming! Wish I could charge that much LOL :) English Cockers actually get a little different of a cut but it is very similar... I don't have any English Cockers who Come to me or I would make you a video on them...
Thanks for posting this. I love my cocker spaniel but cannot possibly afford to have him groomed as often as necessary - I've been trying to self teach myself much to his embarrassment! LOL!
I do her super short like that because it takes her longer to grow out...and you know... when you do it for a living the shorter you go, the longer it'll be until the next groom! She's never had skin problems (itching, sunburn, etc.) and I've been working with Against blades since my training.
Hey Girl! I'm a groomer too, and I have a cocker. I do a 7F Against on her back, 7F against on her head and the sides of her face, a 30 Against on her muzzle, 30 With 1/3 down her ears, then a 40 inside her ears and around her lobes. 10 with down her neck (and down those cowlicks underneath!) and I blend the skirt with a 10, then a 7F.
You've done a great job with the grooming videos you've posted. Congratulations!! Very generous of you to share your knowledge. I just have one suggestion that would improve your videos - stronger lighting in the room where you film.
That is a very good question and the answer is NO they are very different actually. I don't have any English Cockers that come to me right now to video but if I do I will make a video of that too... Thanks for the question!
Hi, no if done correctly it does not hurt the dog. However it is possible to cut the dog with certain blades. You would either have to be very careful or take your dog to a professional if you aren't comfortable grooming it yourself. Thanks for the question! :)
my cocker is very well behaved during brushing and grooming thank goodness. he's a rescue about two. he also hangs his head OR turns into a limp noodle and collapses on the floor. little stinker. LOL
U make it look so easy your dog is so good my cs is been going to the groomers since he was a baby and 3 years later he gives a fight everytime they dont want me to take him there anymore ughh i hope I can learn some from u by the way ur dog seems to be enyoing the cut he is cute reminds me of my first cs this one that I have now is cute but wild! lol he likes baths, but I dont know why he gets so nervous about cuts and lets dont talk about the ears!
Cockers have a tendency to be little stinkers for sure. :) The key is repetition and praise. Give lots of treats and "ata boys" during grooming. Even just to get him more comfortable stroke him with the butt end of the clipper while snugglin on the couch with lots of treats as rewards. I hope this helps... though some just never learn to like it. Have a great day and thanks agian for the comment. :)
This is great! I just paid $50.00 to have my little black cocker (three months old - she was really shedding - thought it might help), Sadie, groomed. I am not thrilled with the cut but it's okay. I want to learn to do this myself and your video is a start. Thanks for the info on the clippers too.
The whiskers on a cat are not to be trimmed for that reason but dogs whiskers are different. It is fine to trim dog whiskers just not kitty whiskers. ;) Thanks for the comment, good question.
Thank-you so much for this! I am watching it repeatedly. I found the segment where u shaved the inside of his ear helpful in particular as my cocker's ears always seem hot & he already smells only 4 -5 days after a bath. I think keeping that area shaven will allow for ventalation. Currently, I am on a very tight budget -do u think I can get by with either a Revlon human shaver or a pet Whal shaver both around $35.00 Also I assumed I had to cut with the hair grain not against it. very helpful!
Hi there and thank you for your nice comment. I have never used either of those clippers before but I would say if you are only doing the ears then they would probabley be fine. If you are wanting to do the entire body more than once I would invest in a set of professional clippers. I have a video on the ones I use if that might help you, they are about $120. Good luck!!!! :)
Yes, if you are using professional blades and clippers it is either a #10or 15, there isn't much difference between the two so either one would work. ;)
What a great video instruction! Thanks so much for sharing your expertise. I bought a pair of clippers and did my own cocker cut grooming for the first time on our 10-year-old female cocker spaniel instead of taking her to the professional groomer. Your video was tremendously helpful, and the results are pretty good looking, if I must say so myself. :-)
Wish I'd had this yesterday when I was once again shaving down my 15 yr. old cocker. I took up grooming him a couple of years ago when he became blind and deaf enough that he got too nervous to go to the groomer anymore. I get the job done, but not as easily as I could have. Thank you so much for the videos, I will watch them all and pick up some great tips, I'm sure. Any advice on a cocker mix who has more of a golden retriever coat?
Ha got to me one day too late huh? lol Well at least you have it for next time.
As for the Cocker mix, with that type of coat it wouldn't look as good in Cocker cut. I suggest watching my Shih Tzu groom and maybe just doing one length all over. Doesn't have to be super short or anything but just same length all over the body. What do you normally do with it's hair cut?
Thank you that is very nice of you to say. No I don't do any competitiions or dog shows. Just a good ole pet groomer here. :) I enjoy what I do and I like to help others take better care of their pets. Thanks again for the nice comment. :)
Thanks! I have always had Cockers and always try to stay up with what is proper but I have another one who has a Mohawk so I say who cares right. LOL If they look good and the owner is happy that is all that matters! I am gonna post my Mohawk man sometime soon you should check back and see when I do. ;) Thanks for the kind words.
aww he looks good, one of my clients likes her cocker to have the head left long, but everything else like a cocker cut...it's a little wierd, but it looks cute on her, she just doens't like ppl calling her a boy with a shaved head lol, but I like the actual cocker clip.
What did you do to his whiskers! you silly cow

I have two cockers (english) and it cost me £60 / $97 for them grooming (clip, bath, shampoo) but I think it may be wise to purchase an Andis clipper with free #10 blade.

But just to humor you I did google it and I found nowhere on the search where it is bad or not acceptable to shave a dogs face, including the whiskers. Cat's are however a different story. They have feeling in their whiskers and you NEVER want to cut or shave them. Dogs on the other hand don't have such nerve endings and they always grow back.;)

how do you groom a female cocker spaniel's bottom - between her legs without nipping her privates?
dlynchd1 1 year ago
Some recommend not cutting against the grain, what is your source for doing so? Thank you for your post, I hope some of your viewers who complain about your technique will post how they do it. Cocker spaniels can matt so badly if not brushed and/or trimmed regularly. I still plan to buy the groomer's guide, but this is an excellent chance to see what I'm going to be getting myself into. :) Grooming horses is suddenly seeming easier...except for cleaning the stalls. /sigh
chazandru 1 year ago

Ouch wouldnt let you near a Cocker of mine.
demidoodle1000 1 year ago

Thanks!

Thank god someone else grooms my dog. I can't even use a razor on my husband.
Moonsage77 1 year ago
Good demonstration. My Taffy looks just like Danny, and she needs a haircut - badly. But she's terrified of the hair dryer, and I've never tried a razor. We're going to take her to a groomer for the first cut - and she's already two years old, which I've learned recently is not good. She might be terrifed. Yet, we live in Las Vegas where it gets really hot, and she's gotten very, very fluffy and curly this year. Thanks for this "clip" (no pun intended).

xXblackhawczXx 1 year ago
yes um spanielmom93 im shaving my dog and i want to know if i should cut all of their eyebrow of or leave some. i think it might look funny if i do. plz reply!
xXblackhawczXx 1 year ago
@xXblackhawczXx The actual eyebrows do get shaved, you leave a bit on top called the cocker crown. I show you how to do this in the videos... their eyes are supposed to be very noticable and pronounced. ;) Hope this helps

A little rough there -- actually i don't like the look of my Cocker shaven
Andoy1 1 year ago
@Andoy1 Not rough at all, he happens to be a very curly coated Cocker and my camera isn't the greatest... thanks for you comment though. ;)

Thanks!

Do you also shave the dogs whiskers???
it's not right to cut the dogs whiskers.:-(
msici 1 year ago
@msici Um.. I don't know who told you that but it is perfectly fine to cut a dogs whiskers... it's Cats you don't want to cut their whiskers... In fact show dogs ALWAYS get their whiskers cut off no matter the breed or coat type. ;) Sorry you were miss informed but yes I do cut the whiskers. ;)
spanielmom93 1 year ago
I will NEVER pay a groomer again or cutting my dogs hair after watching this. Thank you so much for your help. Can you recommend a good clipper? I bought one from CVS and it works fine, but it makes my Cocker Spaniel's hair look like a freshly raked plot of farmland. Lines all over the place. He looks kind of like a stuffed animal as well.
Also, when shaving the face, is it bad to be shaving off the whiskers?
jacob7207 2 years ago
that you so much for this video! i have been paying for 2 english cockers to get groomed at petsmart for the last two years and I cant afford it anymore.... they charge 65-80$ for each dog!!!!!!
ldanielle81 2 years ago
@ldanielle81 Wow that is a lot to pay for a grooming! Wish I could charge that much LOL :) English Cockers actually get a little different of a cut but it is very similar... I don't have any English Cockers who Come to me or I would make you a video on them...

Thanks for posting this. I love my cocker spaniel but cannot possibly afford to have him groomed as often as necessary - I've been trying to self teach myself much to his embarrassment! LOL!
Nerakay 2 years ago
I do her super short like that because it takes her longer to grow out...and you know... when you do it for a living the shorter you go, the longer it'll be until the next groom! She's never had skin problems (itching, sunburn, etc.) and I've been working with Against blades since my training.
Maddison3737 2 years ago
Maddison3737 2 years ago
You've done a great job with the grooming videos you've posted. Congratulations!! Very generous of you to share your knowledge. I just have one suggestion that would improve your videos - stronger lighting in the room where you film.
Thanks again for sharing.

I have 2 English Cocker Spaniels, is it the same cut? X
TheMrsclarebear 2 years ago
That is a very good question and the answer is NO they are very different actually. I don't have any English Cockers that come to me right now to video but if I do I will make a video of that too... Thanks for the question!

im thanking of geting a cocker but do's the shaver hurt the dog can it cut them it dont look like it hurts your puppie but i never had a dog befor
EmilysBloodycorps 2 years ago
Hi, no if done correctly it does not hurt the dog. However it is possible to cut the dog with certain blades. You would either have to be very careful or take your dog to a professional if you aren't comfortable grooming it yourself. Thanks for the question! :)
spanielmom93 2 years ago
Thank you for the video. What clippers do you recommend for people to get to do a great of a job as you did for a first timer?
Yari415 2 years ago
my cocker is very well behaved during brushing and grooming thank goodness. he's a rescue about two. he also hangs his head OR turns into a limp noodle and collapses on the floor. little stinker. LOL

U make it look so easy your dog is so good my cs is been going to the groomers since he was a baby and 3 years later he gives a fight everytime they dont want me to take him there anymore ughh i hope I can learn some from u by the way ur dog seems to be enyoing the cut he is cute reminds me of my first cs this one that I have now is cute but wild! lol he likes baths, but I dont know why he gets so nervous about cuts and lets dont talk about the ears!
batitica 2 years ago

Thanks for the info on the clippers too.

what about his wiskers? doesnt that mess with his equilibrium? he is so well behaved! aww... good for you and thanks for the video!

The whiskers on a cat are not to be trimmed for that reason but dogs whiskers are different. It is fine to trim dog whiskers just not kitty whiskers. ;) Thanks for the comment, good question.
spanielmom93 2 years ago
haha! i feel silly now! :0)

Naw don't feel silly. ;) Lots of people could be wondering the same thing as you were. :)

Mocchaa 2 years ago
Hi there and thank you for your nice comment. I have never used either of those clippers before but I would say if you are only doing the ears then they would probabley be fine. If you are wanting to do the entire body more than once I would invest in a set of professional clippers. I have a video on the ones I use if that might help you, they are about $120. Good luck!!!! :)
spanielmom93 2 years ago
Can you tell me what number you use on the face and the ears.....
Dnoop4life 2 years ago
Yes, if you are using professional blades and clippers it is either a #10or 15, there isn't much difference between the two so either one would work. ;)
spanielmom93 2 years ago
What type of clipper do u use and what number comb?I got 5 cockers and grooming at $45 per dog is becoming a hassle...
jungledog82 2 years ago
What a great video instruction! Thanks so much for sharing your expertise. I bought a pair of clippers and did my own cocker cut grooming for the first time on our 10-year-old female cocker spaniel instead of taking her to the professional groomer. Your video was tremendously helpful, and the results are pretty good looking, if I must say so myself. :-)
katieinme 2 years ago
Thanks! Glad to help. I am sure your Cocker enjoyed being done by you at home instead of making a stressful trip to the groomers. ;)

LiveLoveLinger 2 years ago
Ha got to me one day too late huh? lol Well at least you have it for next time.
As for the Cocker mix, with that type of coat it wouldn't look as good in Cocker cut. I suggest watching my Shih Tzu groom and maybe just doing one length all over. Doesn't have to be super short or anything but just same length all over the body. What do you normally do with it's hair cut?
spanielmom93 2 years ago
Good job. :]
Dang, I wish my groomer cut my coker spaniel's hair as good as that. She always shaves him like a poodle!

I'm sorry, I wish I could do him for you! ;) Thanks for the compliment. :D

Thank you that is very nice of you to say. No I don't do any competitiions or dog shows. Just a good ole pet groomer here. :) I enjoy what I do and I like to help others take better care of their pets. Thanks again for the nice comment. :)
