Wrong lighting for Moses too. These works need breathing space separated by one hundred miles to truly appreciated. The Vatican places them as part of the whole, however these two parts are greater than the sum.
I saw The Pieta and Moses for the first time. These two works are the best artistic achievements ever, but I was disappointed that The Pieta is at too far a distance and way above eye level. It appears small. There is too much frontal lighting.
Moses made the more powerful impression. It is closer to the viewer. The whole body is full of conflicting emotion. Tt appeared that he would rise, turn and speak to me at any moment. I
didn't get that response from The David nor from The Riace Bronzes.
He signed it because no one believed a 25 year old could create such an accomplished masterpiece. Everyone thought another well known , older sculptor did this.
