I saw the children's display the final Xmas before it all came to an end. It was wondrous. Woodward's was special to those who worked and shopped there. My father got his first job in the downstairs grocery. My aunt married the guy behind the meat counter. I loved going to a Woodward's store as a kid in the 70s. Quality things made in N. America! What a shame the owners murdered it, just like Eaton's and soon the Bay. $1.49 day Tuesday! Sugar lumps wrapped in paper! Thanks for the smile.
I had a picture taken with Santa on one of the last Christmas year it was in business, sad how it is closed :'( I remember like it was yesterday, i wish it could have kept in business.
Woodward's, what can you say? When I was a kid in the 1960's we'd venture to Oakridge Woodward's and go to the White Spot coffee shop for hamburgers. Then we'd go to Woodward's in Guildford. When I lived in Vancouver it was Woodward's on Hastings and sometimes in Lansdowne. Great store, I miss it!
I always thought the Army and Navy department store was downtown on Columbia Street. Not far from the old Wosk's appliance store and where the New Westminster Quay is located. Mind you it has been 40 years.
@Gojiira Along with the Honest Nat's jingle. Yesterday a buddy sang the complete Dick Irwin Chevrolet jingle. Now that brought me back! (Dick Irwin what a great, great guy).
I still miss Woodward's. The one I was most familiar with was the one in New Westminster. As a kid I was amused and amazed at the food department's car service. If you wanted - your grocery bags were put into small bins and rolled underneath the floor to a building outside. On way your out of the parking lot - you would drive up to that building - hand the guys a brown or gray 'license plate' - open the trunk - and watch them put your bags into your car. I thought that was great! :o)
Thanks for this wonderful testimonial to Woodwards. Some amazing footage. Around 3:12, just after passing the bridge construction, they pass Crabtown -- a squatters community on the north shore of Burnaby. Since the community was poor, unceremoniously bulldozed and the people relocated in the late 50's, there isn't much record of it. Lou's home movies may contain the only colour footage known of Crabtown. I wonder if he knows how historically significant his film is.
Mr Koziel in Draperies gave me my first job in Canada, and later arranged for me to do the display work at Golds Fabrics on Granville/11th. The Woodwards staff were all like a family to each other.$20 of groceries then lasted a whole month. Sad demise of a great store,by incompetent upper management.
Woodwards was definitely different than the rest of the department stores. Christmas time at the New West store in the 60's was great as a kid. When Guildford opened in 1966, that was cool as well. I liked the food floor, with it's conveyor belt system, which took your bagged grocery's in a big bin, under-ground out to a parking-lot pick up area. They just did things in a fun and unique way. Thanks for posting this!
How wonderful this person is sharing his wonderful memories with us. Woodwards was SUCH a great place - $1.49 day - the food floor - Park Royal - Christmas in the toy department - all gone. Very sad.
I had an aunt who was a fitter at Woodwards in the 40's.Was this guy working there then?He might have Known her or has pics of her.Her Name was Blanche Ferne Fisher And she was murdered Nov 9,1949.I have been doing research on her so if anybody knows former employees from back then or any photo resources,or anything that can help me,drop me an e-mail.Thanks!
thank you my friend, that was heart warming sorry to tell you that i'm envolved with demo of Woodwards,I will always remenber the christmas times their.

@sereneles You must remember the Woodward's $1.49 radio jingle!
ethicomm 1 year ago
@ethicomm Of course I do. Back in the early 60's it was either CKNW or CKWX but I believe it was played more on CKNW

Whata wonderful man. I hope that he understands that despite the crappy ending, he definitely did not waste his opportunity in life. God bless him.
