  • There seems to be a few people in the cab.

  • I love the connecting rods, make it look very cute!

  • The horn sounds like a whistle...

  • gronk gronk gronk gronk gronk gronk

  • i would of ran with it lol

  • Nice sound chip.

  • This loco used to shunt Bricklayers Arms yard in Bermondsey, S E London in the 1970s.

This brings back memories of watching this loco and others as a youth at that long defunct location. I think I was the only enthusiast that saw the action there, as photographic records are rare.

Wish I had taken a camera!

  • Yes nice air whistle, haven't heard that sound for a long time. Watched this class of shunter for years when a child. Sunday was the best day for shunting duties and with sidings 5 doors away, well who needs a football.

  • O sweet

  • i love shunters!

  • From where was the air derived for the "pennywhistle"?

    Brake air compressor?

That whistle sound like more air than whistle. ( I tune pipe organs. They should have me "voice" that whistle.)

After the engine had continued, why does it take over a minute for the crossing gates to go up?

Why the rods connecting the wheels?

    Not a motor per wheel?

    Thanks.

  • I believe the wheels are connected to the rods for better traction, to prevent slipping.

  • the crossing could be rack circuit lock, the 08 moves slowly, thus taking a long while to clear the track circuit so the barriers can raise.

  • What is "rack circuit lock"?

USA tracks have electrically isolated sections of track: "A" -long section leading to crossing.

"B" called "island" -where track crosses road

    "C" - trailing long section.

When "A" is shorted by the train's wheels, the signals operate.

When the last wheels exit the "island" circuit, the signals immediately stop operating.

Even though the train is now in "C" section, the signals do not operate.

A and C are long enough to cause 25 seconds of warning.

  • sorry i meant to type, track circuit lock! a small current that runs through the rails part of the signalling interlocking system

  • The signals operate as long as the train is on that whole section of track?

    That is unfortunate.

But it is probably far cheaper than a more complicated system and there many not be much automobile traffic at that crossing.

Are those parallel pieces on the ground placed to keep cattle from straying off the road and onto the track? Just noticed them.

Can the locomotive whistle sound more tone and less "air"?

    Thank you.

  • The majority of UK trains have powerful tones, Look up HST horn for example. This is just an old train with a feeble horn tbh =]

  • Ta for that,i know where you mean now.

  • Where is this? I live in coventry and im racking my brains here!

  • This is the branch from three spires junc up to Prologis Park. The level crossing is at Wheelwright lane just past the Hub pub.Its the old NCB line to the former Kersley Colliery.

  • @scruffwood Does the alarm sound sound until the barriers go up on this level crossing m8

  • @Cazkumali no the alarm cut off as far as i can remember.Sadly the line sees no traffic at all now and has been out of use for several months

  • @scruffwood lets just hope it isnt torn up...

  • i have the model train of this

    they are so kool

  • RESPECT DA TRAINS MAN

  • this diesel reminds me of something but i don't remember what

  • THOMAS THE TANK ENGINE

  • that did bring back some fond memories of the early 80`s when we would sit and watch the shunters for hours near Dringhouses yard in York.

  • lol sounds nice

  • Nice little video.

I miss the 08s from around there, hardly ever see one.

    5*

  • Ive driven by there countless times and have never seen a loco travelling down that section of line. When do trains run on that line?

  • A train runs more or less daily and 99% of the time it is an EWS class 66 although on the odd ocasion a class 60 does the honours. The train is often split at Cov Yrd and taken in to Prologis in 2 halfs(depending on the length). The workings are usually early around 7 to 8 oclock am and the empties come out anytime from around 10.30 to midday.Check my other clips and you will see various workings on this stretch of line. The line has been in use now for nearly 2 yrs.

  • Love it absolutely love it ,,,

  • Who owns this 08 Model? It looks like it's blue, but I can't see any company emblem or anything on the side as it goes by. Who owns 08 375?

  • I ,love 08 Shunters :)

Track so close to the road too, real treat for drivers. Im kinda suprised there only seems to be a woodern fence between the road and the rails!

  • The road has only been there for about 7 yrs before that it was fields and the track was double track and was used all the time by shunters with coal trains until the closure of the pit.Now there is only 1 train aday. What is unique is that there is road traffic lights at the level crossing so when the barriers raise some traffic can still not move due to a red light. There has been several road accidents here due to confusion.

  • I love that horn! It reminds me of the warning whistles on some of the Eastern European locomotives like the CHME-3

  • Are the whistle codes different in Britian? He didn't whistle Long-long-short-long and through for the crossing.

  • Nice to see an industrial branch re-opening: May we see many more... :-))

  • THATS A FUNNY HORN!!

  • Sounds a lot like a whistle, lol!XD

  • Utterley faultless

  • I was apprenticed at The Caledonian heavy loco workshops (in glasgow)in the 70's ..We did refurbishments og 08, 20, 21, 25, 29 plus heaps of DMU's and coaches. we had a couple of 08's running around and I was lucky enough to have the driver let me drive it i'll neva forget it!

  • It might well do 20 mph but you are not supposed to go above 15mph as there is a danger of bending the con rods.

  • what are con rods if i may ask? and why is it dangerous for then to bend! this is a smart looking diesel by the way. and what country is this?

  • Ok, this is the UK. Con-rods are the connecting rods that you see joining all the wheels in unison. If you go over 15mph a rod

can bend and the wheels lock up i.e you are stuffed, so a 15mph limit was put on them.

BR built about 1200 of them and they are brilliant to drive real responsive and quite

    powerful.

  • this locomotive weighs around 50 ton

  • Those days are gone in Holland..

  • Does the 08 have cooking facilitys?

  • No. They were never intended for extended trips on mainline, only a shunting engine.

  • Yes they do have a good little electric cooker in the cab. But the bounce around so much that you spill all your tea!!!

  • If you want to know where it is, type 'Holbrooks' into O/S get-a-map and the (or at least an) LC is above the pink circle.

  • It's an Industrial Park north of Coventry, West Midlands UK- nowhere near Heathrow!!

  • standard 08 has a top speed of about 17iirc

  • where the fuck is this? this isnt f1 you tube!

  • I think it is near Heathrow Airport. I reckon the max speed of one of these must be about 25mph flat out! There's something nice about real SLOW speed, man!

  • The Class 08's top speed is 20mph.

The Class 09 (identical to the Class 08) is geared for 27.5mph.

  • The top thrashing, knoking the bolts out of it is 20mph but the manufactuers top speed is 15mph.

  • surely its a bit cramped in the cab

  • So...how many blokes in Hi Vis Vests can you fit in an 08???

  • well that was 4!
