My dad's got a 24/7 4X4 Dodge Power Wagon from 1977, with a 5.2L V8 and 38.5" mud tires that make it physically difficult to climb into. It's not used for moving kids about, because his only kid has a driving license. It's not used to impress people around town, because he lives in Oregon and the people here are more impressed by a Prius and a cup of coffee from Starbuck's. No. It's used for fun, for adventure, and for the pure eventfulness that any drive in it will immediately create.

heres my opinion. dont buy a suv for hauling your children around. if you are going to buy a four wheel drive, then it should be for serious off-roading, and more of a hobby than for practicality. now im from the states(start making fun now) but when people buy a jeep, its for going off road, not hauling people around, although its an added bonus. but its just the feeling that only true offroaders get, that make people buy these cars. its hard for me to explain, but you just have to feel it

Big cars aren't new. An SUV is just the current equivalent of a van or a station wagon.
I drive a small car myself, but I get really sick of the authoritarian attitude people have adopted in telling everyone else what to drive. Most families (in the US anyway) need 1 vehicle that comfortably seats everyone and can haul occasional cargo or trailers. It's not practical to keep that as an extra - so it gets used every day by somebody. In a free country they shouldn't have to explain themselves.

i witnessed an accident where a fiat 128 hit a mitsubishi pajero side on and sent it on it's roof. nobody in 128 was injured but all 4 people in pajero were. that much about safety

My 1989 Jeep weighed just over 3100 lbs and had stopping distance comparable to most midsize sedans, along with suspension that held tight and true where many full size sedans wandered and leaned.
I owned an '85 GMC Jimmy (the bigger one) while in college. It had horrible mileage, but it held a lot people, and it was the only vehicle that could handle the downtown streets without losing a hub cab or blowing a tire. Now that I live in the suburbs, where the streets don't resemble tank traps, I own a car.
Drive something that fits your needs, not some monster that you think you "need".
I've never understood people who don't work on farms or live in the woods owning these things. To me, someone owning one of these in a town or city is AS retarded as a farmer deciding that the best choice for pulling his horsebox across a muddy field is a SmartCar.

suv's are for football moms, and trucks are for men......and women with men who drive trucks. hooray for 4wd, manual locking hubs, third gear, and weed and beer.
best thing to get if you're going off-road alot is either a jeep or a beat up toyota imo. they go well and it isn't such a dilema if you happen to accidently bump into a rock or tree and as you seen from top gear toyotas are almost indrestructible
If the Range Rover had been a diesel he would have gotten at least 20mpg for that stop-start driving. High revving petrol engines in heavy 4x4s is just plain daft.
Actually most SUV shouldn't be taken off road, not with those terrible road tires and stupid suspensions.
Only the rare few such as Land Rovers can be, but with care. Not because you can't but it'll make a larger dent on your wallet when you bump into a rock (well it's off road right) ^_^
Hmmm.... Safety in a crash but not as safe in avoiding accidents. All I can think of that can be safe in a crash and avoid it is the Range Rover Sport ;P plus you wouldn't have to worry about your kid bumping his head when doing the off stuff ;P
And at least he has one reason of owning an off road car. You'd see most hogging the roads and used in school runs and never even taken off road. Which is like forbidding a doctor to do and operation. They should do more research in buying a car.
I rescued a Land Cruiser 100 from the beach once when he drove it in a puddle and it messed with the electrics (despite being a diesel!) My 1993 Discovery tdi towed him and his boat 40km along gravel roads to safety.

If they did, they'd have realized that many large sedans are just as safe, if not safer than these off roaders. The funny thing is tho, they bought their car solely for the safety of their family - yet they did absolutely no research on what would be safer. When it's your families safety in question - wouldn't you do as much research as possible?

I love big SUV's always have and always will. You just get a feeling from driving them that you don't get from any other car. And frankly, i couldn't care less if my vehicles mpg was 4 or 40.
It reminds me of my brother. Every time we all get a new hobby he has to 1up everyone by going out and buying something that is so much better than everyone else's stuff that he raises the status quo. He did it with airsoft for example. If a few people buy hugeass SUV's to be safer, everyone will get them and it will be the same as if everyone drove normal cars but with higher roll centers. If you get hit by a semi you are still fucked and the other cars hitting you are the same size as yours.
i have got 5 offroaders. i hve got 2 little suzuki 4x4's and a Bowler wildcat, a toyota lancruiser V8 and a normal landcruiser. i am using those vehicles for 95% of the time off-road. so i dont care if it tips over when i have to make an accident avoiding move, or that their bad at braking. i just don't care. for the road i've got other vehicles and yes i want those vehicles to perform better at those 2 points beacaus the road cars are 95% of the time on the road.
funny in the breaking test they show the only SUV i have seen without ABS my excursion stops like the cars did in the test so every test i have seen from clarkson is bullshit and no comparison to modern SUV's lol

Do you have a good car as well or do you chug around in that....4wd's are so bad on the road.
A big v8's power is just wasted because of the weight, they end up as slow as a suzuki swift...they also handle like crap.
But if you own a farm or something, they are useful

best thing to get if you're going off-road alot is either a jeep or a beat up toyota imo. they go well and it isn't such a dilema if you happen to accidently bump into a rock or tree and as you seen from top gear toyotas are almost indrestructible

If the Range Rover had been a diesel he would have gotten at least 20mpg for that stop-start driving. High revving petrol engines in heavy 4x4s is just plain daft.

Actually most SUV shouldn't be taken off road, not with those terrible road tires and stupid suspensions.
Only the rare few such as Land Rovers can be, but with care. Not because you can't but it'll make a larger dent on your wallet when you bump into a rock (well it's off road right) ^_^

Hmmm.... Safety in a crash but not as safe in avoiding accidents. All I can think of that can be safe in a crash and avoid it is the Range Rover Sport ;P plus you wouldn't have to worry about your kid bumping his head when doing the off stuff ;P
And at least he has one reason of owning an off road car. You'd see most hogging the roads and used in school runs and never even taken off road. Which is like forbidding a doctor to do and operation. They should do more research in buying a car.

I rescued a Land Cruiser 100 from the beach once when he drove it in a puddle and it messed with the electrics (despite being a diesel!) My 1993 Discovery tdi towed him and his boat 40km along gravel roads to safety.

fuck I hate stupid people. They clearly did absolutely no research on cars before buying one. If they did, they'd have realized that many large sedans are just as safe, if not safer than these off roaders. The funny thing is tho, they bought their car solely for the safety of their family - yet they did absolutely no research on what would be safer. When it's your families safety in question - wouldn't you do as much research as possible?

SUV's are nothing more than a big big big big big big waste!!!! Using an SUV in the city like London Takes a hell lot of space compared to a normal car and often they are only used by one or two people at a time! Their fuel iconnemy is hell!

It reminds me of my brother. Every time we all get a new hobby he has to 1up everyone by going out and buying something that is so much better than everyone else's stuff that he raises the status quo. He did it with airsoft for example. If a few people buy hugeass SUV's to be safer, everyone will get them and it will be the same as if everyone drove normal cars but with higher roll centers. If you get hit by a semi you are still fucked and the other cars hitting you are the same size as yours.

i have got 5 offroaders. i hve got 2 little suzuki 4x4's and a Bowler wildcat, a toyota lancruiser V8 and a normal landcruiser. i am using those vehicles for 95% of the time off-road. so i dont care if it tips over when i have to make an accident avoiding move, or that their bad at braking. i just don't care. for the road i've got other vehicles and yes i want those vehicles to perform better at those 2 points beacaus the road cars are 95% of the time on the road.

Not all SUVs stop slowly. An audi Q7 can stop from 60-0 in 116 feet. That can definitely compare with smaller cars.

That archaic system is deceiving. UK gallons (4.5 liters) are not the same as the ones used in Texas (3.8 liters) . Liters are the same everywhere.
