I'm curious as to why you said Starbucks but not which bookshop you went to. It doesn't really matter, just something I noticed. I think I'm going to aim to give at least one compliment to someone a day.
during the 2009 p4a, hank asked the middle-of-the-night commenters to comment w/nicest thing anyone has ever done for us/we've done for someone. then he talked about compliments. how giving (and receiving) compliments can be so nice, but we sometimes don't do it because we worry about how it'll be received/how we'll be perceived, maybe we don't want to put ourselves out there. he talked about how his own feelings about compliments have changed over time. it's a great topic for a challenge/video.
You should really se the Swedish, original, version of The girl with the dragon tattoo. It's even more briliant! And a better representation of Lisbeth as the strong woman she is!
Good challenge! Simple compliments really do make a difference. My tfios came earlier today and I just finished..oh my god. That book. I love it. And I think it's very cool that you're acknowledged in it :).
quick question, does it cheapen compliments if you are going out of your way to give them?
this is phrased appalingly but if you say to yourself i am going to compliment this person on something, do you not perhaps think you are complimenting them for the sake of it, i really cannot explain this at all
oh forget it, its just my cynicism anyways, combined with my terrible spelling and scentence structure i just should not have said anything at all (but im still posting this comment)
Wow, you hit the nail on the head. People do get weirded/creeped out by random people telling them something, especially compliments. It's strange that something you considered nice can actually have such a negative impact on the way people perceive you.
I really enjoyed Girl w/the Dragon Tattoo as well. I was upset at first that they would have to remake it after such a brilliant version had already been made (really people, why can't you just read the subtitles?), but I actually found this new version to be realllyyy good. They stayed very true to the book, and I thought the actors did really well. (Seriously, three cheers for Rooney Mara. She was a great Lisbeth)
I love to give compliments its the easiest way to make someone happy
i sometimes even look out for people that i think look sad, or people who look like they don't normaly get noticed or complemented. however i only give honest complemts. i love it.
I'm normally really good about complimenting strangers, I am surprised though that sometimes the friends I'm with make confused comments about why I just talked to a random person. ahhhh well, they will learn, grasshopper.
Also, I felt badly b/c today of all days I didn't see many strangers, so I didn't have an opportunity to compliment them. So now I'm on little-known youtuber's pages giving out little happy comments =). I hope that counts.
@Goldlucky13 The ones I ordered won't arrive until February, but I bought one in a Waterstone's today and just finished rereading it (I started just after I uploaded this video, in fact).
@HannahCruickshank lol I knew I should of Google'd it and if you didn't reply to me I would of never found out I'm the top comment. wrong. okay but top comment.
I always add a "have a nice day" to people at checkouts in shops, did it today to a guy working in superdrug who had look like "fuck my life". He seemed to peek up and replied "yeah you too"... interesting how you can make someone's day less sucky with a simple sentence
Why thank you! So many people think a guy in a skirt is weird.
Giving compliments is something of a lost art, I think, and I'd add that it's harder for a male to give random compliments than a girl...if I complimented some girl's skirt or her boots, chances are 50/50 that I'd get smacked for my troubles. Kind of a sad state of affairs, really.
@glassisland You wouldn't get smacked, but chances are she'd think you were either hitting on her or gay, depending on the compliment. It is a strange culture we live in.
Yay a rosianna video just before bed. I think giving compliments is a really lovely idea. I shall try harder to compliment people other than my friends, who I compliment a lot.
ahhh i want to go see Girl with the Dragon Tattoo so bad, but i want to read the book first! and i have so many books already lined up to read. i'm gonna have to wait for dvd, i guess...
@Dleger13 Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is probably the only instance I've ever come across where I thought the movie (both of them actually, the Swedish and the Hollywood versions) were much much better than the book. I think the thing about the book is that it's such a good story, so it makes up for the fact that the writing isn't that great, but the movies can bypass that so you get all of the good with none of the bad!
I'm curious as to why you said Starbucks but not which bookshop you went to. It doesn't really matter, just something I noticed. I think I'm going to aim to give at least one compliment to someone a day.

I've seen the first 2 movies of the Swedish adaptation and have not, yet, read the books, but I'm looking forward to see the Hollywood version.
Rosiana, do you have a PO box or an adress where we can send you stuff? (I promise it will be useful-stuff, not envelope-full-of-glitter-stuff).
