I'm constantly reminded of the saying "don't judge people before you get to know them" This is one example of that. Please put yourself in their shoes and ask yourself what would you do?
This was a powerful video... I am currently working with this population. And this social justice issue is very real and very prevalent...but we can all do something to help out. I pray for all the people that have and are going through similar situations. You can make it in life and deserve to have dreams and goals...and you CAN reach them (Philippians 4:13). Whenever you're down think on God's love (John 3:16). Don't give up!!! Much love & God Bless!!!
Here is a solution for homelessness. Group all homeless together on a nice piece of land and have a huge vegetable garden and maybe some sort of fishery where all of the food needed to feed ANYONE is grown locally and also canned for the winter. I am sure there are many homeless people that would love to grow their own food instead of eating that canned sickening garbage that everyone is soooo generous to give away! PROCESSED FOOD IS NOT HELPING ANYONE!
One thing that does bother me about this video though is that it seems like a few people did not want to be filmed and their wishes were not respected. I can't help but be hurt by the fact that the individual filming was not considerate enough to film only those that were open to being filmed. This behavior disrespects homeless. Had it been someone else and not the homeless who had objected, I think they would have backed off. Just another way we take advantage of their situation. :(
Some of these comments make me so mad. seriously people most of these people didn't do something bad to become homeless, and for the people who made comments about the mothers who are homeless, they proably weren't homless before they had the kids or they would have tried their hardest not to get pregnant because who would want their kid to grow up in a life like this, and for the people who dont live in sioux dakota shut your mouths you dont know what your talking about and quit be racists.....
I lived there and I never saw a homeless person out in the street well just one woman.. I guess i simply didn't walk outside often or lived there long enough..
You know who lives in South Dakota from the comments. Everybody talking shit obviously has never lived in South Dakota. You don't know what it's like. The U.S. government did this to the Native Americans and to this very day do not give a damn about them. Shannon County, SD is the poorest county in the nation. Please, come and live in Sioux Falls for awhile and see what it's like for yourselves.
omg...I lived there in the early eighties. I used to sit in the library there a lot. Nice library. Those stupid laws about the number of bedrooms you have to have your children safe, warm, and fed. This is so damn sad. I can't believe there are still homeless families there just as there were in 1983. The winters there are rough too. Not a good place to sleep outside. I know this video is getting old but I wonder, is this still happening? Of course it is.
@ladyButtterfly Amen. Lady this is not just going on in Sioux Falls. Look no further than your own community or surrounding communities. There are needy individuals everywhere. Yes you can donate money to the shelters and soup kitchens of Sioux Falls, but you can also make a difference in your city as well.
I think that it's ironic, that homeless Natives in Sioux Falls are ridiculed the most for being bums, drug addicts, drunks, etc.(I lived homeless myself in SF back in 2000) Now that I am in Michigan the homeless persons around are primary Whites and blacks and they are ridiculed by their own just as bad. The Natives I know around hear are Sober, healthy, and proud just as I. I've never seen a homeless native here and there is many of us. Hear its the whites that are meth heads!, blacks crackheads!
I had to move from my apartment in downtown to the west side of the city to get away from the homeless guys asking me for my money. I learned not to take my money with me when I go downtown.
keemosabbis comments are pretty ignorant u should try to learn more about natives before commenting about such things.......you think we all want to just stay on a phucked up little reservation our whole lives? And dont think we are all stupid and poor with no shame.Alot of us hate that poor example of indians which white people see everyday. We do not all look pitiful or like poor drunk bums...
Now originally I had thought that the reservation would provide a place for Indians? Not to say I am being ignorant, but doesn't the BIA have a budget every year for outreach? Shouldn't the Tribe and BIA have public assistance? With that federal money, shout be supplimented by medicaid or some other state assistance program- food stamps whatever? IT IS A SHAME THAT THERE is no case management DIRECTLY involved on the streets, seem like the more you help the better the books and more funding? or?
I live in sioux falls and i feel for these people but i have to say some of these people except (for the children in the family and people who lost there home and job through complex circumstances) deserve this. Everybody knows drugs are bad and education is good doesn't matter where you live you know this. Even if you don't believe in yourself thats not an excuse if you have a normal human brain and go to a decent school their is nothing that separates you from Einstein except for pure work.
I remember back to the Truman days. Homelessness was not a problem in this country until Reagan became president. Since then, the problem has persisted. Many of them are veterans. Is America dying?
If I had a 1/4 of a penny for every god damn homeless indian in south dakota I would be like 2 3/4 penny's away for paying off my lincoln... BUNCH OF LOW DOWN BUMS THAT ASK YOU FOR MUNNIEZ. THEY NEED TO GO DIG SOMETHING OUT THE LOCAL DUMPSTER.....
Your ignorance is a shame and it's disgusting that you have no compassion for people that are suffering. I hope that you will someday see the error or your ways.
Oh believe me I live downtown and I see homelessness almost everyday here hwere I live. There's f---ing Native bums (I guess I shouldn't say that I am Native) It's like they want me to feel sorry for them. Well, you know what fuck that.
@Chantilly999 I disagree with the assertion that I should try to walk in someone else's shoes. I have walked many miles in my own shoes and have done very well for myself. I did not start out rich in fact would not consider myself rich now but I'm definitely better off because of my efforts. Any person the handicapped and mentally disabled being the exception, through effort to attain that which they need sloth and indifference are the things that make the difference
@roosevelthighschool really??? I lived there and i never saw one... and i walked through downtown a lot... Idk i guess I was to mad to noticed.. but i swear i never saw anyone walking but me... sioux falls downtown is lonely
I live here in Sioux Falls, SD. This is very, very, true. Rent here is very high and pay is low. I know many Native American often go back to the reservation. We have many people that trust a family member to do what they said they would do and they sometimes will take the funds and leave the worker exposed to the elements.

If you're addicted to crack you kind of brought it on yourself. I do understand those hard working families who can't afford to pay their medical bills and those I give my condolences to. People are so judging when it comes to appearance, like they think that is the image they want to project of themselves. Needs come before wants. I remember one time though there was a guy downtown in a wheelchair with a cane, and would ask for help only to beat you and rob you. Not all of them are like that.
Wow...Skye, this is amazing. I never realized how many homeless there were in SF. It definately opened my eyes and made me see that we can help them in such little ways. Thank you Skye! Keep up the great work!
Wow...what to say? A video that needed to be made and spread to raise awareness. The problem is very real in our community of Sioux Falls. Be grateful for what you have, realize necessity vs. want. Homeless is a reality. People need help..with the loss of jobs, the economy issues, even more people will struggle. It is hard..there is help out there but is there enough? Help in whatever way you can. One person can truly make a difference.
As a life time resident of Sioux Falls, thank you for showing me some thing that I have chosen to ignore. Real people, real problems. There are many agencies that provide hope for the homeless. May we come together as a community to end homelessness in Sioux Falls.
Take a moment to reflect on your own life. Those of us that have the luxury of a roof, please don't take it for granted, it can be gone in a blink of an eye. The northern Midwest can be a very harsh climate with flooding, tornadoes, hail, ice, snow storms, blizzard and frigid cold. Even with shelter these events can be devastating, without it they are sure to be deadly. Give when you can, and give more during the winter.
