  • I think i'd be cool if a linux core package could be sold and you'd get more support and more features like gaming on linux etc. then on top of that widget operating system companies could sell their widgets to embellish the os

  • test ..in feature

  • The core philosophy of Gnu and Linux is that users have four essential freedoms:

    0) The right to run the code in the manner you choose.

    1) The right to read and modify the code.

    2) The right to redistribute exact copies, for free or for charge.

    3) The right to redistribute modified copies, for free or for charge.

The kind of ideals you are talking about don't fit with everything we've been working towards for that past 25 years, so there's the door ==>

    Have a nice day!

  • i will have a new vid on this topic soon although you may disagree with some points i will make, but it the message should be clear in that I am not against what you state.

  • Hey.....You do not truely understand the meaning of open-source and certainly do not understant linux. I believe open-source requires more then having an open code. It requires being free to the end user also. And linux is about freedom. You'r talking about people having trouble making products for linux but linux has a goal to not need proprietary software. Sooner or later all linux apps and drivers will be open-source and will work just as good or better. Deal With It.

  • Sheesh, is this guy dense? He just doesn't get it. The minute you start splitting up a Linux distro into Free and proprietary entities, treating it like a product, talking about "market forces, consolidating the different distros and worrying about market share, belittling Linux support forums, it's no longer Linux. There are ways to unify and strengthen Linux without attaching a barcode.

  • To be honest, I prefer windows to linux. I've been in the linux 'comunity' for a long time. It really sucks. Imagine they could control all the market share... that would be a disaster. What about programming? Since almost everything is released under GPL, that would force other programmers to do the same.

Linux is a mess, they can not even agree on what to call linux, is it the distro, the kernel, the OS. It's a mess.

  • Oh, I'm a mac fanboy by the way... OS X is the best OS. But if I were forced to choose any other I would have a dual boot windows/linux. But I hate linux "open" philosophy.

  • I can understand that having just one Linux distro would invite more support from vendors but one of the greatest strengths of Linux is the innovation that competition within the distros brings.

    Lindows: a better package installer

    Ubuntu: ease of installation

    Knoppix: live CDs,

Konqueror is better because it competes with Nautilus,

KDE is better because it competes with Gnome,

SUSE for the office, Red Hat for servers, Gentoo for masochists (just kidding) one size does not fit all.

  • I think the distros are a great weakness but it is also an advantage. its not consolidated but it helps from a Darwinian point of view. When windows vista sucked, thats it, you have vista. If a linux distro begins to suck you can cut the fat and go to a better one.

  • Try BSD if you want a business friendly model and guess what MAC OSXs kernel is based on it. Linux is the largest code base in the world its not a governing body, Linux itself is not forked at all thats largely due to the GPL. BSD on the other hand is. Personally I use both but BSD is growing on me. And what do you mean its not free? Sorry but maybe you should have read into what Linux is before posting. I am not suggesting you take it down but maybe a rev?

  • Sorry to come down on you like this but Linux is a kernel licensed under the GPL with to thousands of individuals.. It is a unix like system. There is no governing body for linux, a distro is a collection and configuration of scripts and packages ontop of the kernel to achieve a goal, look at redhat they had no trouble making money from linux. You have missed the core means behind the system. Linux itself is not going after home users, Ubuntu is. Thats a particular distro that uses Linux.

  • i am not sure where i disagree with that in the video, i have programmed for Redhat 6 and SuSe 7. My point in this vid is part of an arc if you will of videos supporting other operating systems to compete and give us a viable alternative to Windows in both consumer and enterprise. While the server side is doing very well this video is a request to linux to consolidate to compete in the consumer market rather than going distro, distro.

  • I know what the intent of GNU was going to Linux and its foundation, my examples of Redhat and Novell among others are great success stories. Mandriva with OLPC among others, all very well and good. But again this is not stating what Linux is but where I would like to see it go in combination with another or by itself to reduce Windows market share by at first 30%

  • i am one of the people that this video was about. I have never used Mac OS X. I have made a lot of arguments against Mac OS based on my experience with earlier Mac OS Systems. Very stupid. I've knocked Mac OS in favour of Windows so many times until I actually sat down and learned about Mac OS X. I prefer Linux over Windows any day of the week. Mac OS X is more like Linux than it is like Windows. To say otherwise would just be stupidity in my humble opinion.

  • which lunix distribution you using.

  • back in the day i used redhat 6 and SuSE 7, today most of my linux clients are either still SuSE(novell) or Redhat.

  • Windows: don't worry, I'm just keeping the world running.

Linux: don't worry I'm just keeping the internet running.

Mac: don't worry I'm just making a slideshow.

  • my god... Do you have any understanding of where Linux is right now? Do you have any idea where it was five years ago? Developers on Linux can't just get up and say, "you know, I don't like Ubuntu. I want my own!". Do you realize how damn hard that is? How much commitment that takes? Linux devs continually grow wary of re-inventing. The reason is support. ex: Linux uses X11 for base graphics support. There is also other options that could be used, but no one is using it, so no one supports it.

  • i think the problem is you see Linux as something for businesses to grow but the way it was created and developed is as being free and open source. my Ubuntu i use for its free apps and the one reason its not my main OS is purely becuase its open source and there is no profit it lags behind all other OS's. i think thats its place in the market though, keep linux free :)

  • i have basically moved back and forth between windows and GNU/Linux several times. For now I'm happy with Linux. I am more productive in it, I enjoy it more, and I am all about Freedom. I concede, my moral standards or tastes might change, or other systems might develop more of the type of things I like. So who knows? Maybe I could end up on Mac. I'd love to own a Mac. But for now, No, I'm happiest where I am. I don't see me ditching Linux for a long time.

I am a coder but I talk more than code

  • So true mrbit10, everything you say is so damn true! keep it up man, I'm off to check the rest of your vids out.

  • total arswipo.

  • Alot of windows fanboys understand that windows suck, but embrace Linux to make it seem that their system is as good as a mac,,,it's not.

  • #1 that is a very general statement. There are many different kind of macs. Just assuming mac is better in all cases is wrong. Second linux and OSX are completely different. People using linux are likely using it for completely different reasons than mac. It also runs on mac. Windows fanboys would not use linux. Then wouldnt be windows fanboys then.

  • I will try and be less general,, Windows sucks and Linux sucks,,hows that?

  • Very mature. Lol.

  • I use Linux on my laptop, I just don't like it as well as Osx. I would put it o my kids desktops, but it cant run itunes so I am forced to run windows on them.

  • The main issue with linux is its not for standard users. Its for geeks who like to spend hours getting their drivers to work. It is getting better though.

  • Yes it is much better than a couple years ago, much more user friendly. The drivers are much better, but still have a way to go.

  • why dont you use amarok, I can help you if you want, believe it is better than mac os x

  • Now, you're a programmer for a living so yes, the GLS doesn't work for you. That's very understandable. In truth, most Open Source programmers don't program for a living. It's more of a fun thing for them. However, since the GPL really is a philosophy more than anything, people are willing to donate quite a bit to many Open Source projects. It's not enough to live on, but if you're doing this in your spare time it's nice.

  • And, surprisingly, even though Linux is mainly open source, proprietary programming are beginning to look at it since it had a huge spike in new users of the last year (thank you Vista!). So much so that even a few game developers are hiring Linux programmers. Now, I many not know much about programming, but getting a major game developer to begin wanting to focus on Linux as well is a pretty big indication on how programming companies are viewing Linux.

  • Ubuntu 7.10 (being released in 6 days) will fix a ton of the driver issues. It as drivers for more than 100 video cards (probably more since many of the drivers apply to multiple video cards) as well as drivers for many other computer components.

  • Before using Ubuntu 7.10 there hasn't really been a good distro to fly for consumers. There were some like Sabayon with the driver support, but installing apps on them was a real b*tch. Then you have Ubuntu using debian which makes installing things easily but lacks driver support.

  • So Ubuntu 7.10 with a ton of drivers built in is nice. In 7.04 and beyond I had to use the terminal after each install and install my video driver and fix various issues with my mouse. Then I had to modify the sound to get my Mac's keyboard control to modify it. But there's full on support in 7.10.
