Make no mistake....if Rachel had run in the Derby she would have won it. EVERY trainer watching her work that week was so relieved she was running in the Oaks. Fabulous filly. She was just flat out amazing.
Beautifully balanced, immensely strong with great conformation, she finally changes legs in the last few strides, her opposition destroyed. Every so often another comes along!
Kinda reminds me of How Frank Whiteley wanted to take it very slow with Ruffian, by allowing her to dominate the Filly's , and then when she is ready she would take on the boys. But in the end Greed took over, and we know what happened after that.
Jess Jackson = the Destruction of Rachel. Mr Wiggins was a true gentlemen, and would have taken his time properly with the Super filly. He knows he could have won the derby vs that field, but he didn't get greedy like ol' jess would.
Morrison wasn't going to let her race against colts at all. He said that stallions should run against stallions, and fillies against fillies. But thankfully Jackson thought the best should run against the best.
@queenluciaa - With all do respect, you don't think she would have been a solid 4 yr old if she didn't have to fuss with the boys so early in her career?. She could have taken them on at 4, being stronger, and mature. Who knows?...
Either way, a filly that age that can dominate the opposite sex that wayis phenominal. It came back to her in the end, but it doesn't change what she accomplished at that age.

I didn't know RA's mom rejected her and they had to give her to a nurse mare but her caretakers said the feeling was mutual as RA took to the Nurse Mare. I don't know I read that and I got a little worried that part of her mom could come out of her. I hope not. I can't wait to see little Curlin's or RA's!

Saw this race iwith my own eyes- still brings chills. There's NOTHING like watching a great horse run and listening to the roar of that crowd as they turn for home.

@AlreadyGone15, One race doesn't make a horse better than another, Secretariat didn't win every race. I saw the race, yes Zardana was the faster horse that day, but I still think Rachel Alexandra, at top form would beat Zenyatta. I think it would be close, I give the edge to RA, in top form. Hopefully we'll see that again.

This was the race that introduced her to the fans at the national level....I think she was too good for these horses and very glad she raced colts after this. Too good for races against fillies. She won the MG by @19 lenghths, the last 2 times facing own gender. Looking forward to Sat race!!!! A long lay-off, So excited to see Rachel at 4yrs old!!! I think she is better than Zenyatta, I think the AB will be close but I pick Rachel Alexandra.
That's true. The same physical attributes that make a filly a sublime racehorse usually work against her as a broodmare. It's usually the sisters of the great fillies to look for or the dam if she's young enough still. Also sometimes the genes are recessive and the foals of the great fillies daughters become great again. It's all in the blood, but creating the perfect racehorse is a delicate art. When you see an RA or Zen in the family though, you know something is there.
Love him or hate him but at least Jess Jackson put this horse through a tough campaign after purchasing her after this race. The last owner would have kept her against the girls all year and it would have been like the Harlem Globetrotters against the Washington Generals No competition. Zenyatta vs Rachel will be a great race and I pray both horses just stay sound until their next career being moms!!!
OMG oaklawn raised the stakes to $5,000,000 dollors to get Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra to run in the April 3rd Apple Blossim. Thats as rich as the Classic!!!!!!

She just won HOTY so I had to watch it again! I was so torn between her and Zenyatta..... i love them both, but I think Zen deserved it more. RA is still great though!
Here's the way i see it, Rachel beat a lackluster group of fillies and in this race the one horse that had a chance scratched, When she beat the boys, with the exception of the Preakness, there were maybe one or two great quality boys. On the other hand, Zenyatta beat a better class of fillies, and her one race when she beat the boys was a much more talented group of boys including ones that Rachel never faced. Hands down Z should have been HOY just my opinion
And Ruffian did like it but..she breaks down it was so sad. guys go watch that movie!if you havent seen it jet! 1 thing for sure horse racing is good if the horses like it to else not.
And it was unofficial because they have a period where if there is a incident during the race, like lets say Calvin had cut off one of the hoses possibly costing the other connections a better placing, that's when they examine it or a jockey can put in a complaint in. Disqualifications do happen on occasion in horseracing just not all that often on the really big race days.
If Rachel does not get the HOY title, I'll be utterly surprised.
To me she is the best horse of 2009 and surly the best of this century. Zen might have proven herself like once against the boys, but look at Rachel, she slayed the girls her age and beat the boys both older and younger. Zen's beat most of the field in the Classic that Rachel already beat. Say what you want, but Rachel is my pick of 09! =]
I don't understand how people can forget what Rachel has done throughout her EIGHT races. Zen is a great race horse, but she is NO Rachel. Rachel is HOY!!!! She is the ONLY choice.

Yes, the two horses run very different races. RA is a front-runner where Zen is a closer. Also, RA is 2 years Zen's junior which in racing is huge. Furthermore, I don't think Zenyatta has been really tested where RA is getting the experience (different tracks/conditions, running against males, females, older horses, etc.) that she needs. I can't wait to see what the future holds for RA!
In a match race Rachel has the edge but if Rachel runs too fast and is pressured by other horses closers like Zenyatta have a much better chance. Zenyatta is one of the best closers of all time. But then Zenyatta ran virtually every race on poly which favors closers. How would she do on a dirt track favoring speed? She might fall short a couple of times versus G1 males if she raced them more regularly on dirt. But that is mere speculation.
Every time I watch this, I get goosebumps. Even on my face, lol.
There is something truly special about this filly, and the connection she has with Calvin. It is awe-inspiring. I would saw she is up to the standard of being compared to Ruffian, even. She almost beat Secretariat's record at the Woodbine, which would be a feat for any horse, let alone a filly. :D
Have you also noticed that most of the recent contenders for the triple fall down at the Belmont?
I have a feeling that whoever selects a mate for this filly should chose very, very carefully. If they could breed Rachel with the right stallion, we could get a foal that might break through and WIN the triple at last. Rachel has the heart and the stride...all that is missing is stamina.

She is outstanding. Possibly one of the best fillies ever. Certainly holds her own with Ruffian and other star fillies, and with her wins against the boys, she is one of the best horses ever! I LOVE Rachel!!
Somewhat ashamed to say it, but last year I was a Stardom Bound fan. I'd never even really heard of RA. Of course, after the Fantasy that changed. Now, I'm a die hard RA fan. She's the best filly in the world.

Rachel has been pressed in the past (preakness) where as Z has always seemed to have it easy. I would love to see what Z would do when she tried to pass but Rachel doesn't budge and digs in. I hope they meet soon!

NEVER HAPPEN. Rachel is overmatch! on dirt at Oaklawn where they raced on the same distance 1/16 Zenyatta beat Rachel's time by about a second. That is 4 to 5 lengths. Just imagine if the race was on dirt and longer than 1/16, Zenyatta would trounce her. In reality, Rachel has a very very small chance of beating Zenyatta on plastics. LOL No wonder Jess opted out of the Breeders. They don't want Rachel near this mare.
You're nuts. Zen's times are much slower this year. Plus look at all the fractions and the competition. Zen ran a 1:48 on a faster rated track while Rachel ran a 1:46. And in the Hirsch Zen ran a dawdling 1:43.1. Zen had a couple of impressive races last year but this year she's meeting the same old competition and barely winning. Meanwhile Rachel faces the boys and sets track records. Duh!!!!

Well, I LOVED the Haskell. Anyone who thinks he can predict the result of a matchup by comparing 1 race by horse A to another by horse B doesn't know much about racing. Why do you think tracks make money and betters don't?; Read Beyer in 1977 berating Seattle Slew and picking Cormorant in the Preakness. Stats don't win races.
Sloppy track, torched the boys and .2 off the stakes record. I'd love to see what would happen if someone actually pressed her. The best 3yo colts can't do that, obviously.
RA has set 5 new records in 4 graded stakes: Golden Rod (new time record), Martha Washington (new time record), Kentucky Oaks (new winning margin record), Mother Goose (new time record- FASTER than Ruffian) (new winning margin record- previously held by Ruffian). She was also the only horse in Preakness history to win from the far outside position. She rarely gets the whip. How fast would she be if asked more? Still young, what will she be like when she matures? AMAZING!

@AlreadyGone15, One race doesn't make a horse better than another, Secretariat didn't win every race. I saw the race, yes Zardana was the faster horse that day, but I still think Rachel Alexandra, at top form would beat Zenyatta. I think it would be close, I give the edge to RA, in top form. Hopefully we'll see that again.

This was the race that introduced her to the fans at the national level....I think she was too good for these horses and very glad she raced colts after this. Too good for races against fillies. She won the MG by @19 lenghths, the last 2 times facing own gender. Looking forward to Sat race!!!! A long lay-off, So excited to see Rachel at 4yrs old!!! I think she is better than Zenyatta, I think the AB will be close but I pick Rachel Alexandra.

That's true. The same physical attributes that make a filly a sublime racehorse usually work against her as a broodmare. It's usually the sisters of the great fillies to look for or the dam if she's young enough still. Also sometimes the genes are recessive and the foals of the great fillies daughters become great again. It's all in the blood, but creating the perfect racehorse is a delicate art. When you see an RA or Zen in the family though, you know something is there.

Love him or hate him but at least Jess Jackson put this horse through a tough campaign after purchasing her after this race. The last owner would have kept her against the girls all year and it would have been like the Harlem Globetrotters against the Washington Generals No competition. Zenyatta vs Rachel will be a great race and I pray both horses just stay sound until their next career being moms!!!

She just won HOTY so I had to watch it again! I was so torn between her and Zenyatta..... i love them both, but I think Zen deserved it more. RA is still great though!

Here's the way i see it, Rachel beat a lackluster group of fillies and in this race the one horse that had a chance scratched, When she beat the boys, with the exception of the Preakness, there were maybe one or two great quality boys. On the other hand, Zenyatta beat a better class of fillies, and her one race when she beat the boys was a much more talented group of boys including ones that Rachel never faced. Hands down Z should have been HOY just my opinion

And it was unofficial because they have a period where if there is a incident during the race, like lets say Calvin had cut off one of the hoses possibly costing the other connections a better placing, that's when they examine it or a jockey can put in a complaint in. Disqualifications do happen on occasion in horseracing just not all that often on the really big race days.

If Rachel does not get the HOY title, I'll be utterly surprised.
To me she is the best horse of 2009 and surly the best of this century. Zen might have proven herself like once against the boys, but look at Rachel, she slayed the girls her age and beat the boys both older and younger. Zen's beat most of the field in the Classic that Rachel already beat. Say what you want, but Rachel is my pick of 09! =]

Yes, the two horses run very different races. RA is a front-runner where Zen is a closer. Also, RA is 2 years Zen's junior which in racing is huge. Furthermore, I don't think Zenyatta has been really tested where RA is getting the experience (different tracks/conditions, running against males, females, older horses, etc.) that she needs. I can't wait to see what the future holds for RA!

In a match race Rachel has the edge but if Rachel runs too fast and is pressured by other horses closers like Zenyatta have a much better chance. Zenyatta is one of the best closers of all time. But then Zenyatta ran virtually every race on poly which favors closers. How would she do on a dirt track favoring speed? She might fall short a couple of times versus G1 males if she raced them more regularly on dirt. But that is mere speculation.

There is something truly special about this filly, and the connection she has with Calvin. It is awe-inspiring. I would saw she is up to the standard of being compared to Ruffian, even. She almost beat Secretariat's record at the Woodbine, which would be a feat for any horse, let alone a filly. :D

I have a feeling that whoever selects a mate for this filly should chose very, very carefully. If they could breed Rachel with the right stallion, we could get a foal that might break through and WIN the triple at last. Rachel has the heart and the stride...all that is missing is stamina.

She is outstanding. Possibly one of the best fillies ever. Certainly holds her own with Ruffian and other star fillies, and with her wins against the boys, she is one of the best horses ever! I LOVE Rachel!!

Rachel has been pressed in the past (preakness) where as Z has always seemed to have it easy. I would love to see what Z would do when she tried to pass but Rachel doesn't budge and digs in. I hope they meet soon!

NEVER HAPPEN. Rachel is overmatch! on dirt at Oaklawn where they raced on the same distance 1/16 Zenyatta beat Rachel's time by about a second. That is 4 to 5 lengths. Just imagine if the race was on dirt and longer than 1/16, Zenyatta would trounce her. In reality, Rachel has a very very small chance of beating Zenyatta on plastics. LOL No wonder Jess opted out of the Breeders. They don't want Rachel near this mare.

You're nuts. Zen's times are much slower this year. Plus look at all the fractions and the competition. Zen ran a 1:48 on a faster rated track while Rachel ran a 1:46. And in the Hirsch Zen ran a dawdling 1:43.1. Zen had a couple of impressive races last year but this year she's meeting the same old competition and barely winning. Meanwhile Rachel faces the boys and sets track records. Duh!!!!

Well, I LOVED the Haskell. Anyone who thinks he can predict the result of a matchup by comparing 1 race by horse A to another by horse B doesn't know much about racing. Why do you think tracks make money and betters don't?; Read Beyer in 1977 berating Seattle Slew and picking Cormorant in the Preakness. Stats don't win races.
Sloppy track, torched the boys and .2 off the stakes record. I'd love to see what would happen if someone actually pressed her. The best 3yo colts can't do that, obviously.

RA has set 5 new records in 4 graded stakes: Golden Rod (new time record), Martha Washington (new time record), Kentucky Oaks (new winning margin record), Mother Goose (new time record- FASTER than Ruffian) (new winning margin record- previously held by Ruffian). She was also the only horse in Preakness history to win from the far outside position. She rarely gets the whip. How fast would she be if asked more? Still young, what will she be like when she matures? AMAZING!
