The opening chords should be a real statement and they just aren't in this recording. There isn't sufficient passionate drive and energy.

There's a really annoyingly excessive use of pedal here, this movement derives its frenetic energy from the string ostinato, which in this recording all the notes of which have been blurred beyond being an ostinato at all.
