When performing a classic you cannot win the crowd over by trying to clone it. In the comparison you will ALWAYS come up short. Make the song your own, many will not like it but if you try to copy the original NO ONE will like it.
This song is what made me start to listen to/like The Who, which ultimately led to them being my favorite band (next to Queen)...so seriously I have David to thank for opening me up to such BEAUTIFUL GODDAMN MUSIC.
LOL at the people putting down this performance. They have no idea it's exactly why DC won Season 7. He was the first contestant to truly change up a song and "make it his own". Never mind if it's unrecognizable but it sure worked for this show. Before DC, maybe Blake Lewis did it a bit, but other than that, no one else came close. His other arrangements were clearly better than this effort. Hello and Always Be My Baby, just to name a couple.
This version is ok... still MUCH prefer the version by Jordis Unga, Dana Andrews and (naturally) the original Who version or even the Blue Man Group... For me this song is about rebellion so this yellow mellow version isn't floating my boat.

I liked it. I think people get too serious about the "classics." It's a form of flattery, for someone to think your song is good enough to cover it. I love the Who, but settle down. Geez.
@Antigonistic. You're missing the point. There is a difference between being precious about a 'classic' and being annoyed at someone lazily slowing a rock song down so that he can look good. The boy has a great voice but he has completely changed the song so that it is almost unrecognisable from the original, to the extent that both his performance and the original song have been cheapened.
@picol74 No, I'm not missing the point. People have different opinions. I like this version of the song BECAUSE it's different. I wouldn't have wanted him to cover it exactly like it is, because while his voice is good, it's not as good as Roger Daltrey's. So I think he did the best he could have, and arranged it in a way that suited his voice.
An absolute disgrace. This has taken a classic song and killed it. I don't have a problem with the guy singing it but the organisers should have a long look at themselves. This is the worst version of a song I have seen on any of these talent shows.
Why the fuck would you slow down the tempo for this song? Its all supposed to lead up to the Its only teenage wasteland part. Now its just kind of deadlined. Plus the farking synthesizer was gone. Why?
oh boy!...not even in Italy we have a shit like you...what a ruin..you're lucky that keith moon is dead... He could try to play at you like a snare drum at the end of the concert!!..destroied!!!!!!!
oh come on Dave! how can you not manage to fuck up a ZZ Top song but an Iconic song by The Who? I mean your Billy Gibbons is spot on but why'd you mess up Daltrey so bad? It's more like John Mayer/Michael Buble than Roger Daltrey....it's all bad
WHere the fuck is the studio version? Just like Eleanor rigby, the live version sucked total ass, but his studio version eleanor rigby turned out to be the best i've heard from him.
People are stilled pissed at something done and forgotten nearly 2 years ago. Sad. People still cling on to the past, David Cook probably forgot about this performance.
damn why is everyone bitching about how he ruined it. Ya its not better than the original but still david always changed the arrangement of the songs he did because he didnt want to make it sound like he was copying the original. So he did the smart thing and changed the arrangement. And if you see the version with the judges comments than you'll see that the judges liked this rendition. And besides if he did it just like the original he would have shown no originality.
In American Idol, the contestants add their own touch to songs to give it a sense of originality. Don't say he ruined it when he was just doing his duty as a contestant.
Lame and melodramatic? I think he mixed styles in this song very well. He was calm in the beginning, and then he began to rock out to it. There was so much feeling in the song. He did it justice.
Its not supposed to be natural. He's supposed to make it completely HIS OWN. If it doesn't sound like the original, he's done his job. There'll be those who don't appreciate that he made this completely his own, and there'll be those who realize, "hey, this guy did a superb job."
not supposed to be natural? everything's supposed to be natural, otherwise it's crappy
its like when the rolling stones did 'satanic majesties request'. the stones are amazing, but that wasn't natural, it was different, but it was crappy
there are ways to make things different without them being artificial. an example: look at the blue man group's baba o riley. look at the beatles' version of Twist and Shout. there are a load of covers that are different but real. not this one.
By "not supposed to be natural," I meant its not supposed to sound exactly like the original. This was far from "crappy." What's crappy about it? Please explain, as you've made little to no sense to me.
Baba O'Riley is the song, not the band, but I'm sure you knew that. I'm just pointing that out for the hell of it.
And lets take a look here. There's nothing sappy about this song at all. Do you notice how he rocks out? He just chooses to go a little lighter on the beginning. This is far from sappy. Have you ever heard sappy music? This doesn't have anything that could make it considered sappy.
before we continue, are you an actual David Cook fan? because if you are you probably don't know too much about music, and there'd be no point trying to argue with you.
No, I'm not. I love listening to bands like The Beatles, The Who, Duran Duran, Queen, and Billy Joel. I know quite a bit about music. I'm not so sure about you. None of your arguments have been convincing in the least.
i didn't enjoy this performance. some other American Idol performances actually do songs justice; i actually enjoyed Jason Castro's performance of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. it wasn't great in terms of pop sensibility or even in vocal range i guess, but it was enjoyable
this just wasn't, sorry. i don't hate the guy for doing this, because for some reason you seem to be really offended. i just think it was a boring cover that didn't do the who and the song's power justice.
@BUwink David writes his own music and had written his songs for many years now ! While he was on American Idol, he had no choice but to sing other people's music.

He's a fine singer, but this is a languid performance of an otherwise powerful song. It doesn't sound like they took the lyrics into consideration when they made this arrangement.

He probably couldn't do the original version they prob didn't have the right stuff on idol and maybe he just really wanted to do this song cause its soo awesome. So he had to come up with a new arrangement. So cut him some slack!

I like David Cook, but he really sucked the life out of this song. He won, anyway.

He's a fine singer, but this is a languid performance of an otherwise powerful song. It doesn't sound like they took the lyrics into consideration when they made this arrangement.
pmtrub 2 years ago
so if he makes his own take on the song, it's completely in-comprehensable why he would change it to fit his style. gotcha

I did not say that. I said that it was a boring performance of a mediocre arrangement.
