  • I have an interesting experience with books when I was in elementery, haha I use to go to the public library and take out like 10 textbooks and not read a sigle one and then i´d return them and get 6 or 9 different ones.

  • awesome. Thank you so much.

  • If I'm reading a technical paper I find I have to sound out every word and openly dictate it to myself, and puzzle over it to get any understanding, otherwise I just glaze over all the jargon and understand nothing.

  • embarassing workshop for losers... :(

  • I've probably read like 5 books b4 i turned 12.. I remember the first book i read it was like 80 pages and took me 2 hours LMAO

  • lol i actually laughed when he went backwards on the chalkboard

  • i luv dat teacher haha xD

  • i want johnny 5 spped

  • i want jonny 5 speed from short circuit 2

  • Approx 400 per minute :)

  • I read at 57 words in ten seconds and 570 a minute.

But i have a friend who goes almost a 1,000,but he's in Mensa so i guess thats not unheard of with them.

  • Yes, maybe that's exactly what I have. Regression. But it's gotten so extreme, it makes it difficult to get through a page.

  • I am a college student and a writer. I used to swallow book after book up to age 12. I've been struggling with speed ever since. I've developed a strange compulsion (almost, OCD-like) to reread the same sentences over and over. I'm looking at the words and always anxious with the strange need to ensure that I understand 100% of every phrase. And I stopped reading. It's a challenge for me to get through 5 pages in 1 hour now. I love reading but it's become torturous and I can't control it. :(((

  • @doomsdaymonster7 omfg i knew i was not the only one who struggled with this. re-reading sentences over and over while obsessing to ensure that I understand everything crystal-clearly! Can you believe it takes me months just to finish one average 314 page book? Well I had to put a stop to that! Hence my drive to this video.

  • Great advice. When I speed read I miss stuff though. I hope he has a solution for that.

  • Should be used in music! Prima vista, etc.! (:

  • the only way you can increase your reading speed is if you read period

  • thanks bro.

  • Only read important parts. Extraneous information is extraneous.

  • "how many people in here hear voices in their head... *awkward moment*.. when they read?"

    hah

  • @debunker1905 i hear my own voice reading the words, thats how i know i read them, i still read at 450 wpm with no formal training or classes

  • @debunker1905 i hear my own voice reading the words, thats how i know i read them, i still read at 450 wpm with no formal training or classes oh ahha, wow i finished the video and he covered it

  • Think of the analogy he uses about peripheral vision when walking down the street. Sure we're using it, and we notice people and things but how well can you remember all the faces and details?

  • SpankBank is correct, I can read much faster using speed reading techniques but it comes at the expense of comprehension and on anything college level usually results in having to re-read the material to get what was missed the first time.

  • My primary contention with Speed Reading is some words have more than one definition. While reading simple sentences and paragraphs as a whole may not be difficult to comprehend. If you were to Speed Read through technical information, you may not be able discern sentences without associating it with a certain connotation.

This is essentially the reason why reading slower is preferred when an individual is attempting to explicate words in their appropriate context.

  • i wanna improve myself

  • @system0system0 we all do

  • the alternative to reading word for word is browsing...BUT you can never browse through the constitution unless you want to and then you undersand squat

  • i wouldn't sacrifice comprehension for anything

  • if i lost 1% but could read a book 40 times faster. then thats okay for me personly

  • i just finished up my pre-engineering associates and I can tell you if you sacrifice comprehension you will be doing a lot of re-reading.

  • you mean if i 'don't' sacrifice comprehension?

  • I mean what I just said.

  • oh that makes sense

  • 269 wpm

  • A very good teacher. I find speed reading very helpful.

  • 236 wpm silent reading plato's cratylus

150 reading aloud... I feel like a retard reading out loud and have no comprehension lol.

  • 300 in my head...280 out loud.

  • Subvocal is fine if you want to enjoy poems and so on. The subvocal barrier is around 900 words, and yes, you can read 800/900 wpm with subvocal and full comprehension

  • Hmm, well, I read a little bit faster when not speaking.

    Silent reading: 330wpm

    Reading aloud: 170wpm

I'm interested in how this goes on..

  • omg ive been trying to get rid of subvocalization for YEARS

  • try meditation! it helps removing the voice in your head while reading!^^ Vipassana meditation

  • oh wow I hadn't thought of that. that's a really good suggestion

  • Thank you for considering my suggestion. Hope you'll succeed in doing it!

    Best regards, Samuel

  • 28 OKs in 9 minutes equal 3 OKs per minute.

  • Yeah I did the drill on part 1, got 500 words. Anyway, it's crazy how slow we are taught to read and it doesn't boost in high school. No wonder other countries do better on tests; if you read 100-200 wpm and have 5 mins to check your answers vs someone who reads 500+ wpm and has 20 mins to check answers, you got no chance. I heard before that the American education system is just set up to get an 8th grade level, and I'm not even going into lack of critical thinking.

  • Is your rate of 500 the product of previous speed read instruction? And do you feel your comprehension is comparable with someone of equal intelligence at a slower rate?

  • more or less. When you chunk your words you get the main ideas. You might have a little less than if you read slowly, but when you get used to speed reading, this gap will be bridged. I can do over 1000 wpm now.

  • great to see. thanks
