Newcomers to the hobby of coin collecting, as well as people who find (or inherit) a stash of old coins, frequently ask how they can clean their coins. The simple answer to this question is "don't!" If you clean your coins improperly (which is very easy to do) you will significantly reduce their monetary value.
Quote ....."......You always hear "don't clean coins, it RUINS the value." Bullshit. Coins dug out of the ground need to be cleaned to even see what they are. You use the least abrasive method. Hot soapy water gets some of them......."
Yes, only use soapy water until you are sure it has no value, if it doesn't, clean it to your hearts content.
...Its the vinegar in the ketchup that does any cleaning..plus you can just use vinegar to soak your coins in to clean...but not too long because the vinegar will start dissolving the coins especially old copper coins!
You always hear "don't clean coins, it RUINS the value." Bullshit. Coins dug out of the ground need to be cleaned to even see what they are. You use the least abrasive method. Hot soapy water gets some of them, I use vinegar for the next level, and for really screwed-up coins I use a product called NEVR-DULL which is a chemically-soaked soft cotton wool. For gold and silver (not copper) I even use straight ammonia.
@mnpd007 Any dug coin that has to be cleaned to be identified usually has very little collector value to begin with. If you clean coins that weren't dug, I guarantee you any dealer at an appraisal or any coin grader is going to downgrade it by at least one grade. Say you have an 1894O Barber Half Dollar in VF-20 condition (worth about $160). Clean it with Nevr-Dull (which would scratch the hell out of it) and a PCGS grader would knock it down to VG-8 grade (a whopping $35 or so).
you all are sooooooo fucking stupid, gosh the coin wasn't even dirty, its idiots like u all give coin collectors like me a pain in my ASS!!!!!!!! thank god i learned how to tell a cleaned coin from the original luster. u all always ruin coins.STOP FUCKING DOING IT!!!!!!!
@jbraun32 you say you dont clean your collectable coins this way, but what is the fucking point in cleaning any normal coin that has no great value or sentimentality? it'll probably be spent before you know it, not like it holds any fantastic value that would justify a cleaning....
@jbraun32 What about someone else in the future who would have wanted that coin in his collection? All cleaning methods, especially this one, will damage the coin. You might not be able to see it with the naked eye, but trust me, a look at it under a low-power microscope will show all kinds of damage from this. The only harsher cleaning method than this would have been a pencil eraser.
@carrotass as i understand, using something acidic like ketchup will ruin the face of the coin... sort of like how acidic foods wear on tooth enamel. i did this project when i was in elementary school, and had the same results as in this video. it took a minimum amount of "ick" off the coin but left it completely lackluster.
@jbraun32 euhm the best way is 8'/. pure vinegar + some salt and your coins are totally clean in about 10 seconds! i tried ketchup, and it didn't work --"
@jbraun32 here is an idea for you to dwell on why not use metal polish it gives much better results is quite cheap and doesnt leave your coins smelling of ketchup.
@tol3671 thank you finaly some one agrees with me un like jbraun32 he said "u are wrong it does work........its just that the picture wasn`t taken very good. i cleaned all my coins with ketchup!!!!!!!!!!!!!! " see thanks
Instead of rubbing with ketchup. you should have a little glass with ketchup and then put the coin in there so it covers the hole coin, and wait for 2 min, then clean and it will be shiny!!
try this ... white vineger in a cup.. with a little salt.. stir it up.. put the penny in it for a min or 2... take it out.. dry it... then take a pencil eraser to it... you'll be blown away how well it works..
not too great. it's works because ketchup has 2 components that clean the coin, salt and vinegar.
it's would have better results if you used them instead

As already, said never do this to any coin of value, it will make it worthless.
You should never attempt to clean a coin that you may wish to sell.
Yes it is the acid that cleans the coin, many household products will have the same effect.

Cool video. Could you just let the coin, sit in ketchup, overnight, rather than having to rub it?
