very good your work is inspiring for anyone working in this business, was looking over fiber techniques and I found your videos and spent the night watching and watched all, congratulations, I took some tecnincas I lacked for a service I have to do in the fiber my car, thank you.
@riltjd Just to clarify, what I am building is whats called a body buck. I will use this to produce full production body panels. After that I will be able to produce any body part as many times as needed.
@h23sirlude Do you mean the first design or the latest version? Its not finished yet I am still working on it. You can check FaceBook for the latest updates.
Hey, is that polyurethane foam or polystyrene foam? I want to make a buck for a mold for a concept car, and I've always heard that you need polyurethane foam, but I don't know where to get it.
@eriko5791 The foam we used is a polystyrene version that is for home insulation. Its denser than most and easy to cut and sand. You can use either foam types. The issue with polystyrene is that it will melt when you add body filler or resin from fiberglassing. I you look the the rest of my videos you will see that we cover all the foam with an aluminum tape to keep it from melting.
thanks for posting! Lee and i noticed someone asked where you got the foam? The foam is available from composites one but i will tell you it is expensive! Lee
@chickenpoper Well this is video number 2 out of 50 videos I have up. You may want to watch the rest to see what happens after this stage. But in short it all gets removed, and this is whats called a body buck from which molds will be taken from.
Your like a bee working in the hive! and not one stop for a trip to the fridge to get a beer...that's what slows me up! :- Love your series by the way :-)

I have done the same thing but instead of using foam I used clay. Check out my vidios. Clay is better to work with and makes it easyer to come up with a new shape. The mothod you show here looks hard with no room for change once you have set yourself up.
@tecnocato LOL yeah thats my favorite part. Actually its pretty simple, the program just does it for me when i compress the timeline. Guess its a part of Sony Vegas.
@tecnocato I remarked that too. I figure it does it by chopping the sound maybe 15 times per second. that gives it a slight propeller sound but works fine
@zazoolious you are so absolutely right @ BailyBlade that's pretty damn impressive only seen 2 vids and I am blown away at the craftsmanship I see you also use 3d max I have this also but am not very good at using surfaces I have tried cars and failed but I am gonna keep watching GREAT WORK !
great videos guys iv just discovered this project so have been watching them all. just a quick question. i am thinking if starting a replica project on my motorcycle and will need to make my own fairings. do you think this process of wood and foam will work on a smaller scale for a bike?once again great vids with some very helpful tips!!
@dibnah46 Thanks, Yeah i think you could do this same process for a motorcycle. It should be pretty simple. Just make sure you have a good frame for starting. And make sure you watch the rest of the videos to see all the tips and tricks that i learned. Its a serious process to go though.
I just have to say I had no idea that people where out there trying to do what you are doing, I would like to help if you need it. I don't know if you can email me or not? I have just never tried on youtube to contact any one. I own a welding company and not real busy and have tons of equipment! Good job and keep the ideas going
hello there, for first conglatulation for the great job u guys are doing. I have a question, what kind of foam u have used? foam for thermic isolation used for building? is it in polyester? opened cell or closed cell? Im asking just to understand of what kind of product i have to look for.. thanks
The foam we used is bulk quantities of foamular 150 closed cell (extruded polystyrene), its cheap bought in large quantities and comes in various thicknesses which make it easy to work with. You can and also get it in large 6x20 sizes as well but hard to work with and heavy.
im a artist..and i have alot of crazy ideas for car designs in my head. i dont have the money to unload all this information from my brain.....sssooo i was just wondering around how much does it cost to do a project like this??
@darkking198522 It depends on several things but in general if you are looking at doing a one off car using a donor then it can be done for as little as $30K or less. If you are looking at starting a company building and selling kits then you would be looking at $100K $200K startup. And if you are looking at building a true production car then figure around $500K - $3Mil and this is where we fall. Our car is not a one off custom and not a Kit Car, it will be a limited production car.
@BaileyBlade ....WOW up to $3million.....................DAMN.!!!!!!!!! what if u finished your 1st car but without the headlights, windows,etc....have just the body, and make some kinda mold so u could do another car, then finish both completly and sell the cars for a reasonable price so you'll have enough money to build 4 of them with money left 4 yourself..????? then once you get far enough ahead u could start on different and more advanced design with a higher price.....
@darkking198522 Well Im not saying the car would cost $3mill but thats what it takes for tooling, machines, materials, facilities and employees. Its not cheap to make a production car, but like I said if you wanted to do a few one off cars it can be done for as little as $30K or less.
Your are correct!!!... the pink foam came straight from our local Home Depot. Its 1 inch think and comes in 4x8 panels. For what we did its perfect. Also just a little side note its fire resistant, so it gives you a little sense of security if you need to weld in metal supports while surrounded by foam. Some foams like pour foam and expanding foam are HIGHLY FLAMABLE. I mean Think Napalm.
what kind of foam and wood did you use. I also have a design that i would like to make. how do you decide how far apart the wood sections are? thanks!
Umm I hope youre kidding What I am building is called a Body Buck from which we will make the final body molds from. Watch the rest of the videos to see how the process goes.
no offense dude, but for so much time you will spend on this - i would have hired a better designer in the first place. The 3d renderings look like mazda/cobra.
I like this wood and foam process it would last many years and uses for mold building.
