Wildkkkat1, the cammer was way ahead of its time. All aluminum and overhead cams! Are you kidding me! The hemi was a great engine don't get me wrong. A true car guy loves and respects all brands, not just one. The Ford, Chevy, Dodge rivalry is getting old. That tbird was a true barn find and an authentic 60's drag car. Truely a piece of hot rod history.
If this engine (Cammer) was so great, why did they stop production..? All Top Fuel & Nitrol Funny Car use the Hemi design for one reason.....You can produce much greater cylinder pressure with a Hemi...it is that simple...! The cammer had two design flaws...#1 oil system flow problem....#2 cam chain overload tension.
culcune, those cammers can sure haul. Whenever I'm lucky enough to see one at a car show, they stop me dead in my tracks. To see so much engine in an engine bay is breathtaking. When they fire up everyone around takes notice. There is nothing like cammer power. Pop's Toy was stroked to 472 cubic inches I believe.
The rare 427 Cammer was never banned by the NHRA. A lack of parts made it impractical to campaign them in fuel classes. Dyno Don used that engine in Pro Stock for a while in the 70's, but it never made a come back after NHRA's misguided move to small block engines 30 years ago.
im a ford guy buy heart and all the chevy guys are like yup chev rules 427 and L7s all the way im like what about ford 427 sohc cammer with 619 hp and up used for 1966 made in 1964 and 65 they have no clue what it is because all they look up is chevy stuff all the time and there like oh ya well how about a 572 with 720hp and i laugh at them cause they dont care about nestalga ! they like new crate engines cause there engine was blown long ago !!
@scatpack I got the pleasure to see one of these SOHCs back in the 80's at an L.A. area gathering spot. The guy who owned the engine had transplanted it into a '69 Mustang, which was nicknamed "Pop's Toy." My friend who I went with had seen this car a few times, and was very excited to tell me about it. Funny thing was, he was a very devoted Pontiac (real Pontiacs) guy, but he gushed at the thought of this car. I read in Hot Rod a few years later that the car was stolen :(
@ntrains If I remember, it was quite a fit in the '69, but probably not as much as a Galaxie, lol. I hope you got to hear it run! Maybe it was the stolen engine from Pop's Toy?! LOL
@ntrains OK, it might not have been stolen after all. I just googled "pop's toy" and an article from 'Legendary Collector Cars' came up about the car (yt won't let me paste the link in here) Interesting read...Pop's Toy was originally a Boss 429, so it wasn't too tight of a fit, lol ;)
@culcune I have an article on "Pop's Toy" in Mustangs and Fords. I can't remember the issue date but the car was on the cover with his grandson. Yes, it was a 69 candy apple mach that came with a Boss 429, but Pop wasn't impressed with the 429 as a street performance engine. He dropped a SOHC 427 in it. It is one beautiful car! He cruised the streets of Van Nuys Calif. looking for victims. This car dominated the streets back then. This Pop could really haul the produce. He was a produce farmer.
@Mr427cammer I saw an article in 'Legendary Collector Cars' where Pop's son and grandson built a new '69 replica of the original Pop's Toy recently. I was lucky enough to have seen the original (even though 'Pop' didn't burn out or do a fly by) before it was stolen, but that was in the late 80's which was pretty much the end of cruise nights in the Valley. This was around the same time a friend of mine bought a '68 428 Cobra Jet Mustang for $3k, and my Pontiac friend bought a '72 TA for $k
@scatpack Couldn't agree more... When Chevy saw that they couldn't keep up with Ford and Chrysler, they just kept adding cubic inches to their engines... All chevy guys will mention the mighty 454 with 435 hp... Rubbish, compared to the 7500 rpm 427 or the super powerful Boss 429. When Gm fans get to know that, they just say "found on road dead" and go away thinking theyve won World War two. Kind of idiotic.
@scatpack Im a chevy guy , but you HAVE TO respect that motor!! I have an LS6 , and would cry if one of those pulled up next to me. I never have experienced one side by side, only seen in action. I think I would lose (sadly but respectfuly)
I saw Pete Robinson & his special slingshot dragster a couple of months before his death. His dragster had that "sweeper" thingy that was supposed to help with traction & the Cammer used his cam gear drive.
Pete Robinson was one of the guys that kept running his Cammers after Ford stopped all racing sponsorships. Tommy Grove was another that kept the Cammer motor in their cars too.
At the time, the Cammer was obviously a better, more powerful, more dependable, high-tech motor.
I agree with you all the cammer was an exellent engine, but there is one reason it never evolved and lasted long in top fuel drag racing like the 426 Chrysler, and aluminum versions to follow. Between round teardowns that timing chain could get in the way.
Nope! They had a gear drive that was invented by Pete Robinson. It worked great, Mickey Thompson ran one!
The reason it never made it as a race engine, is because Ed Pink, and Keith Black bribed Wally Parks to ban it!
It could blow away ANY engine of the day, and all care had to be taken to keep Ford out of the winners circle, as SEMA had been paid by Chevrolet to establish the Small Block as the all-things-for-every-man engine for hot rodding.
@victimofcheese In the mid 60's this engine dominated A/FX, which is now Pro-Stock. It was also the first engine to reach 200 MPH in the quarter mile in 1964. It's the baddest of bad, the King of drag racing engines by the Big Three.
It took 30 years for everyone to figure out the cammer was the way everything would eventually go. Granted the LSx series has made the pushrod V8 everything that it should be.

Pete Robinson fashioned a gear drive for the cammer, eliminating the chain and "whip" associated with it. He later died in a racing accident.

also, the 427 SOHC cylinder heads are a true hemispherical combustion chamber. Great article on them in the Aug 09 Hot Rod magazine.
