  • cant you grow your own Sweet potatoe plant, from a sweet potatoe?

  • I'd really like to know how these turned out for you but I didn't find an update video for it. I too live in a shorter season area and love sweet potatoes. Please let us know what you found with these.

  • can one plant sweet potatoes the same way you would a regular potato, like just bury a whole potato in the ground? would it grow?

  • sure wish I could do sweet potatoes. No one will ship them here to California. so we have to make our own, from store bought

  • just found your videos! LOVE LOVE LOVE THEM! We are trying out our gardening skills and have just gotten our first yellow squash! God shows his amazing work thru gardening for sure! Thank you so much for all your videos. Cannot wait for my husband to get home so I can show him what I found. I have been watching your vidoes for over an hour now :-)

  • You might be able to increase the ground heat around the potatoes by laying some black (or clear) plastic sheeting on the ground around the sweet potato. This has worked pretty good for me. Most of the potatoes will cluster right at the main stem. I imagine those who grow them in the south would get more potatoes, from where the vine re-roots itself as it grows. But with a short growing season you'll want all the heat help you can get.

  • I hope these turn out for you Kim! I am totally ignorant about growing sweet potatoes, so this was very interesting to see! So I take it you can't plant a sweet potatoe like a regular potato and get a plant, you have to have these "slips" -- right? Keep us posted. Oh, and do you know the name of the variety you got? Thanks, Renee

  • @Michigansnowpony These are called Georgia Jet. Thats right you plant slips not the whole sweet potato. You can start your own slips buy setting them half way down in a glass of water. Or berrying them in sand. Then as the slips grow you cut/break them off and plant. Someone told me of an easier way I'm going to try. Take a cutting from the plant and root it. Keep them like a house plant over winter. Then take cuttings to root off that and plant. Going to try it!

  • @HomesteadAcres -- "Georgia Jet" -- I'm filing that away. I may have to try those next year. Thanks !!

  • Cant wait till fall when you show us how to can the potatoes.... Thanks again for the effort. I use your canning methods for all my excess veggies.

  • @waypastprime Thanks! I hope we get a good yield! I'm hoping to can and dehydrate some. :-)

  • Im doing some next year just didnt have the time to add more this year.

  • I might try this next year too.

  • Oh I didn't know vesseys had a short season variety!! Well if they grow well for you I'm trying them next year! (I made one sprout in my kitchen....but it may be a normal variety =S ) What is the temperature like!? I hear they need heat to survive.

  • @jihadacadien The temp here? It's in the low 20's C right now. I hear it's going to get hotter latter this week. Rain just about every other day (sigh). Yeah this is the first time Veseys is selling them!

  • @HomesteadAcres well it,s still in the 10"s here......=S so I'll wait a bit I supose!

  • wow...I had no idea they looked like that. I thought sweet potatoes grew like regular potatoes. I can't wait to see them harvested.

  • Cool. I thought about planting a little bit of those. My wife loves them. Thanks for showing me. Never planted them before.
