what a great scene when the ohioans meet the tennessee rebs.
this film has a wonderful effect of feeling like you are constantly on the move, which is how these soldiers truly lived.
also, everyone loves john wayne and eastwood and the turner films but have forgotten the true greatness of audie murphy. he was the daddy of wayne and eastwood and all the rest who came after.
At the end of the day, the only way your manage your perception of courage...
The real thing about this period was that the brothers fighting brothers, not sucking votes at the UN, all wrote to their widows when they were mortally wounded that they be remembered as men, because the very worst thing in life in a normal society was leaving this world as a disgusting little bitch, especially with the blood of your own innocent people so you didn't look that way.
i managed to get hold of the 1970's version starring 'richard thomas' [of the waltons fame] could only get it on vhs video copy from america [i live in the england].it isnt as good as the audie murphy version which think is a classic...allways been fasinated by the acw...
Slavery was abolished in the British Empire long before it was ended in the US. If any history teacher tries to you that the Civil War wasn't caused by human trafficing, they are either incompent or else liars.
@RawheadRex72 The Civil War was caused by many factors, not just slavery. Yes, slavery was one of the issues, but if you imply it was the only reason you place yourself in the same category with the incompetents and liars. Read the words the soldiers left behind. The majority were offended by the idea that they were fighting either for or against slavery.
This book was just assigned in my War Literature class. I was thinking of Torrenting the movie, but remembered that I'm on strike 2 of 3 for filesharing at college, so I looked it up and saw there's a...ugh...VHS in the library. I'll probably watch that if I get the chance. Better than tempting fate with a download.
@biggrigga Actually, I'd say the strange thing is that so few ISPs are that tight. I could download pretty much anything on my home computer and never get caught, but they're watching the college one.
@kvn8907 Also, I wrote a Livejournal about how much I hated my roommate and wanted to kill him (I didn't really, and was just venting), and a few days later the college human resources department called me down, and forced me to leave the room. I'm still not sure how the heck they read the post, but they must be tracking keywords. But they just put me in my own room for the rest of the semester, and I just paid a little extra in later semesters for a single room, so it worked out.
you know people say that Saving Private Rian is very acurate to the real thing. well, this too is one of the most acurate movies of what these soliders felt and acted, its really interesting
For those of you not familiar with Bill Mauldin, he is the cartoonist that created 'Willie and Joe' characters for Stars and Stripes during WW2. Seeing him in this was a treat. His cartoons had a tendency to upset officers, especially Patton. (Patton supposedly chewed out Mauldin for a cartoon, then Eseinhower chewed out Patton) If any of you get the chance, go to the 45th Inf Div museum in okla city, okla and see the original drawings. RIP Audie Murphy and Bill Mauldin!
Although the movie was good, the uniform is historically inaccurate. The crossed rifle infantry insignia on the hat wasn't used until 1875. During the Civil War, infantry insignia was a curved horn.
impressive research- but if your focus is on the mere accuracies of the wardrobe, then the message is lost on you- you obviously know the war well though.
I know reenactors who hate this movie because the uniforms and weapons are all wrong. But the dialouge is superb. If they tried to sound like the actors in this movie it would improve their first-person impressions vastly.
A lot of reenactors are both too obese and/or too old to accurately portray civil war era soldiers. Despite the inaccuracies the actors in the movie look a lot more like real soldiers than 50% of the reenactors I've met. I mean who ever saw a 300lb. Confederate or 50+ year old private and I've seen some at reenactments.

ok, john wayne WAS around before murphy... but murphy truly lived the heroism and was still the largest of the western screen stars.

There was a good remake of this movie in the 70's that stared Richard Thomas from the Walton's T.V series.
jam5bryce 2 years ago
really? can you get it on the internet?
I just saw the 50s one. They should make an EPIC remake of this movie with all the special effects today it could totaly work!

I looked it up on the internet. There's so little information on the 1974 version that it practically doesn't exist.

@kvn8907 . its with John Boy from the Waltons as I remember and its pretty good. I am sure its out there some where.

Would rate 6 out of 10.
