@CommonRaven If you doubt the State Department's ability to count terrorist incidents you'll find that independent sources report similar figures. But that's not the point. We both agree violent Islam is a problem in today's world, no doubt about it. But there are well over a billion Muslims in this world--the vast majority are peaceful law-abiding folk, just like you and I. I recently completed a one-year tour in Pakistan and worked in Iraq before that. I really do know what I'm talking about.

@CommonRaven As I said, Islam is going through a period of violent upheaval. The inquisition in Europe and South America, of which the Spanish Inquisition was just a part, resulted in the death, torture, forced conversion, and exile of tens of thousands of people. And then there's the 30 Years War that wiped out 30% of Europe. The majority of victims of contemporary Islamic terrorism are fellow Muslims, evidence that we're seeing an upheaval within Islam, not between Islam and the West.

@CommonRaven I'm not sure what you mean by "group think" or "the PC movement", but I don't see too many people in the West embracing Islam these days. Mass murder has been committed in the name of every religion (yes even Shintoism and Buddhism) not just Islam. Think of the Inquisition, Holocaust, WWII, Kosovo,...the list is endless. I think Islam is just the latest world religion to experience a phase of violent upheaval.

@CommonRaven I suppose I should have been more precise in my wording. When I say "studied philosophy" I am using the phrase in the way they use it at Oxford, meaning that he majored in the subject. The study of religion ("theology") is an important part of any philosophy program, especially at Oxford. Hitchen's book "God is Not Great" was nominated for the National Book Award and was on the NY Times bestseller list. Therefore it's accurate to use the subjective qualification "acclaimed".

@snatale1 Does he have a right to refuse anybody on the basis of race or religion? His license was granted by the state of Texas, which has a legal responsibility to ensure that "our agencies and our contractors" do not discriminate against anyone. I remember the days when businesses refused customers because they were black. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed to remedy this practice. I predict Mr. Keller's license will be suspended or he will be the subject of legal action.

@MachOverspeedsPlace You're right, my home state is Washington. I was able to obtain my Concealed Pistol License without registration or qualification course.
I'm not so sure most Texans would agree that someone should be able to deny service on the basis of religion, which is the real question here. A constitutional lawyer could argue that Mr. Keller's firearms course is a "public accomodation or service", meaning that the Civil Rights Act would apply. I guess we'll see what happens.
