I hear the Japanese Cruisers did more damage to the escort carriers then the Battleships. There was a story that one of the Escort Carriers was hit by 18.1" AP shells from Yamato and they went right through without exploding. They didn't meet enough resistance to set off the shell due to the carriers being converted merchant ships and the shells designed for armoured targets.
I have read just about everything regarding all 4 engagements at Leyte Gulf. As as sailor in a long line in the US Navy I have to say whoever put this together got it all botched up. DO YOUR RESEARCH !!!!
get any game capturing software like fraps or zdsoft's game recorder and sony vegas. and use your imagtination :) btw, this is only the first finished version of battle of samar. never bothered to put the final version on 'tube, but its got a lot of better scenes.
am I the only thinking "yes, closer, I said closer, get as close as you can and engage those warships at pointblank range!" "at that range we won't last long against those battleships..."
the weather isn't right either. the wind speed isnt. wind direction isnt. its not meant to be historically completely accurate... just like most movies 'based on real events' are not. got it?
@masangke I agree, no USN subs were there to help the Taffy 3 force. If they did appear on the battle, the Japanese Admiral commanding his squadron would have to break off earlier to protect his battleship charges from torpedo attacks because he lack the faith towards his destroyer screen to do their job of scaring off the subs and speed up his heavier ships to prevent subs from getting an excellent target angle to shoot from.
The bravest nation wuz japs. Dey new how 2 dye. Fight til there's nothing left, no mercy given and none asked. Now Japan is all fuckin mickey mouse shit b/c of America.
Yeah, they were dying like idiots, senseless, they could live, by they choose their "samurai" codex. When the squad loose, each of soldiers had a grenade, hold it near to heart and detonate. After this, Americans found in caves something like blood salad, walls "painted" with blood and things from human torso. Sorry for bad English.
And those who despise the tactical value of submarines are just a bunch of incompetent and stupid twits who should be forbidden to access any kind of commanding position.
In fact, the submarine haters are just like the ones who, in WW1, scorned the machine guns and the planes as "overrated weapons"
Had a helluva lot o' balls ? I think he just didn't have choice. Whether he tried to flee and would still have been sunk, or he stood his ground with all he got.
The latter would still most likely end up in defeat but, at least, it wouldn't have been without a fight.
U.S. truly the bravest ? I don't deny that U.S. troops - whatever branch it may be - can be, and actually are, brave, but boasting around and pretending to be the n°1 is just insolent bragging and a proof of total blindness.
I just mean that other armies, from other countries, have shown, and still show, tremendous pieces of bravery and valor.
Just try to read some stuff about other units like the Italian Paracadutisti from divisione Folgore, the French Infanterie de Marine, etc.
@Briselance The Italians and French have a recent history of rolling over when confronted with odds like the ones involved in the Battle off Samar, which this video highlights. Sometimes the true test of character is measured in a hopeless battle, or one which you have no expectation of winning, as this one was. The USMC at the defense of Wake Island is similar. The USA came out swinging and fighting even when they figured the jig was up and sold themselves as dearly as possible. That's guts.
"a recent history of rolling over when confronted with odds like the ones involved in the Battle off Samar"
Oh yeah ? Like what ? Which battle ?
Concerning the French, have you ever heard about Bazeilles, Sidi-Brahim, Camerone, during the second half of 19th century ? Heard about Verdun and Dixmude in WW1 or, in WW2, about Stonne, Abbeville, Dunkirk, Alps campaign, Bir-Hakeim, Mount Garigliano, etc. ?
@Briselance Not to mention the importance, both political and tactical and strategic of inner resistance guerilla fighters, both in France and Italy.
Have you even bothered to read some real stuff about Italian and French soldiers from WW2, not some anglo-american ill-founded rag full of cliches ? Or do you prefer those cliches because it's more "comfortable" and in tune with what you've tricked into believing ?
@Briselance The individual French fought great in many theaters in both World Wars.
That doesn't change the fact that in both wars you proved incapable of defending yourselves and your people against your neighbors. You didn't win, you got rescued by the winning team. Twice, actually.
"That doesn't change the fact that in both wars you proved incapable of defending yourselves and your people against your neighbors."
Yeah, quite so, I know.
I never meant to say that we won by ourselves, but that we joined the winning team and did quite well, despite the fact we (the French) didn't exactly make a fine start.
@Briselance Humbly stated, sir. I have the greatest respect for the fighting spirit displayed by many French units throughout history. You just had the misfortune to be a nation of great philosophers permanently situated next to a nation of great warmongers.
The British would surely have been conquered just the same had they not thankfully had the Channel as their greatest defensive works in both world wars, to say nothing of the Americans and the luxury of having the entire Atlantic Ocean!
The United States was very brave. These massive super wepons came agianst nothing but dds and escort cvs and what did they do? They charged thoughs massive vessels to the bottom of the sea. Pure bravery.
The Destroyers to Fight in the Battle Off Samar were the USS Johnston, the USS Heermann, USS Hoel, and the USS Samuel B Roberts

Also, the IJN Yamato retreated from the battle early on because of some stray torpedoes and never rejoined the fight... but hey, it's just a game.
