  • CRAZY! I guess after that you'd think you can get through most teaching situations...

You are a great storyteller. Thanks!

PS. Also just wanted to apologize for laughing at your misfortune.

  • Emotionally lost control of bodily functions LOL

  • I lived in korea for a year. I was 10 years old. It wasnt tht bad, with school and all. just crazy. never got beaten once. i was happy for tht. but i was glad to be back in the US. soooo happy

  • a little tip, it's best to do a clap or clapping to get children their attention..

  • That is hilarious -- I can imagine because heck 5 year olds act like that no matter what the country or culture. I've been thinking about teaching in Korea. Luckily for me, I have some teaching experience and have been a substitute for kindergarten and elementary so at least I have a concept of classroom management before being thrown in some room with kids that don't speak english. Ha.

  • Love your videos, Kevin. I went through a similar situation with my first teaching job in Korea. Only difference was I had a background in working with emotionally disturbed adolescents so I probably felt a bit less intimidated.

  • Korean Kindergarten Cop

  • bodily functions picture that ! LMBO! heheh (^_^)

  • Do not teach for a guy whose name rhymes with "Fim Hoke On". Hagwon is named Joong Ang and is located in Yeongtong in Suwon. The director doesn't pay and lies all the time. You've been warned...

  • wow I am thinking about going to Korea to teach so this was very helpful thank you so much! :D

  • LOL

  • has samuel l. jackson ever emphatically told you that it's an evil fucking room?

  • You remind me of John Malkovich!

  • I think I may be starting your first teaching job in a week.... Ilsan (near Seoul). Did you teach at the Chung Dahm institute there?

  • very well made videos

    really funny haha

i'll be teaching in korea next summer

  • Oh I would freak out too!

  • BusanKevin, where did you record this video? I heard that there is little greenery in the major cities of South Korea. Are you actually in Busan or somewhere else in Korea?

  • @staceyhilton12 he said he was in japan when he made this vid

  • Who was your recruiter?

  • thank you so much for ur vid!

  • I completely sympathise with your situation - I had the same welcoming committee in China. Oooh! Nightmare!! I was a teacher but teaching a bunch of completely out-of-control children who refused to speak any English was just too much to tolerate.

  • nice video kevin. thanks for the warning. gonna be working on getting my tesol. then ill be heading that way. lol

  • nice video kevin. thanks for the warning. gonna be working on getting my tesol. then ill be heading that way. lol

  • nice video kevin. thanks for the warning. gonna be working on getting my tesol. then ill be heading that way. lol

  • thanks for the tips :)

  • tx for the videos. I am getting interviewed to teach in Korea soon. Your videos have been very helpful!

  • Great Story. Thanks for the tip.

  • im a kiwi living in england and starting the 'prep'. Im going to do a TEFL course and teach here in brighton for a bit before going to south korea. Its funny to hear you speak about the kiwis you learnt from. I hope they were a laugh to be around as well as serious and professional. I guess we take things seriously sometimes. Thanks for the cautionary tale. Good videos!!!

  • How can I teach in Japan?

  • wow im only 16 and kind of looking to find a path in life and i found one!

thank you and when i finish uni i have decided to teach in korea. (=^.^=)

does it matter if im asian? well as u said in one of ur other videos and from what i know of korean they are a image based country...

would they rather choose a caucasian?

preferably i guess..since its english im teaching lol

    :)

  • did you teach before korea?

  • nope. Korea was my first time. ended up being there for more than 5 years before becoming a teacher in Canada :)

  • @BusanKevin lucky you, finding a teaching job in canada now is almost impossible.

  • @MooseheadDrinker scary for me...in the next few years I will be trying to do just tthat! Finding a teaching job in Canada.

  • @BusanKevin good luck, everyone starts off teaching as substitute teachers for quite some time & just hope to get on full time

personally i gave up, there is waaaaay too much competition and the # of jobs seems to be decreasing. it helps if you have a degree in the maths or sciences

  • @MooseheadDrinker

are you from canada? im from england and would like to teach in canada but dont know how to go about it...graduated in politics last year but would love to teach english..any tips would be great if you have any

  • I am leaving in one week to start a similar position in Seoul. Can you recommend specific ESL teacher texts I should get for that age group?

  • I can tell you about some brilliant website....

    my favorite kindergarten resource is:

    mes-english(dot)com

  • Sounds almost exactly like my first day! Only, 6 weeks after I finally got used to everything and the students knew me and I was just getting settled, the kindergarteners graduated and I got a nice new bunch of 2 and 3 year olds who barely spoke Korean, none-the-less English. I'm like you, I've grown to love it though!

  • Very good story. Good luck being a teacher, and God bless.

  • The story was hilarious :D especyally the part where she gives you the basket with all the stuff. I was wandering does only native english speakers get hired for these kind of jobs? How is it in Japan?

  • Not really sure ho wit is here. I'm now an experienced and well trained teacher. My school has only experienced people. I'm sure it happens in some schools though...like in my story.

  • Hey Kevin, thanks for the videos about your experience in Korea. I'm half way to getting hired by a company thats going to take me to Korea to teach. I never studied Education but I have worked in schools for about 5 years. I also have some Korean friends I met here in NYC. Thanks again for the vid about your 1st day and I hope to keep in touch with you here on youtube. Hasta luego amigo.

  • Tanks for watching. Good luck with the new job,. Having already been a teacher, things should be no problem for you :)

  • ah sorry to hear that Kevin. why I hate kids..

  • I wish I was your student when I was Kids and just say ''waaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!''.

Anything first attempt will always be a good memories.

  • Japan is best, stay in Japan.

  • Hahaha. :P I know how you felt! xD

I went to the kindergarten for schools hours...or something. xD anyway kids were acually like thoose one. :D Screaming and yelling and running....O: everything i said to them was not helping. xD im glad i went there just for one day. ^^

One kid gave me a nice memory of it! he bite me! xD

  • Great story! I'm a bit apprehensive about teaching as well. I've never had any experience teaching (I had a little tutoring) and when I go to Japan, I'm almost positive that's the only job I'll be able to start out doing. Keep up the great videos and stories! :)

  • speaking of rose colored glasses...

  • Very much enjoying all of your stories.... I do just have one quick question... DId you ever make contact with the Korean speed skating coach after the TV show? Just wondering! Hope you're having a good day :)

  • paste this to 2 other vids

go to ur channel and see ur comments

    just do it it's scary!!!!

  • the "teachers' face" is when you can strike fear into the very hearts and souls of a large group of students without saying a word! Takes years to develop...hehe (you also have to have a well-established rapport with that class).

  • Another great story, you must be in good shape you never get winded during your videos :p

  • I am a runny...and more importantly....a true talker....always talking!!! blah blah blah

  • Yes, I can picture you shitting and peeing right there through your pants wearing your rose-tinted glasses :)

  • Yep....that's what happened....but I think back then....the glasses were a different color! ;p

  • Rose coloured glasses, you say. LOL...you ARE wearing rose coloured (it's actually rose-tinted) glasses :) :)

  • man oh man....I didn't even realize that til I watched it later...after I uploaded it! I suppose...I normally am wearing rose colored glasses...quite literally!

  • Now you know, BusanKevin. No wonder your outlook on life is so...positive? :-P :)

  • hahaha!!! i loved when you said lemme tell you why in "it was hell!....now lemme tell you why" lol. very suave.

  • I'm all about "suave"! hehe

  • Thanks, good story and funny :)

Interesting watching for those of us thinking about maybe trying teaching..

  • cool! I'm glad you think so :)

  • i love how you walk in your vids, oosaka looks lovely, sadly only spent 2 days when i went:(

  • This story is a perfect anecdote for the problems with many 英会話 (private language schools). But you survived and look where you are now sir!

  • @kansaiPJ

I was thinking the exact same thing. I actually applied for and was offered a position with GEOS last year but decided to turn it down. You can't imagine how many times I have thanked God for that decision because less than one year later I'm off to Japan on the JET Program!

  • congrats on becoming a JET! Hope you have a great time here. Where will you be living?

  • Thanks! I'm still waiting on placement. I'm holding out hope that I'll end up in a big city, but bracing myself for the boondocks.

Your videos are awesome by the way!

  • Glad you've been enjoying my vids. From what I hear about JET, you never know what part of Japan you might be placed. Hope it's somewhere cool. Even the boondocks would be cool....just think how quickly you'll be able to develop your language skills! When you live in a big city, and there's lots of English around, it can be easy to get lazy with Japanese.....like me! :(

  • So, I'm curious. Now will all your teaching knowledge, what would you do in a situation like that. New country, don't speak the language, screaming 5 year olds?

  • After a few years in the classroom you develop the "teacher face." You can control a class with a facial expression alone!

  • Damn.... I gotta get me one of those!

  • Holy Crap! That is scary! I've heard similar stories with some Asian countries.

  • yep....it can happen. That's why programs like JET are so appealing...it's gov't run so people don't have to worry about that type of horror story!

  • Well look at it this way, you could be sit'n in Glace Bay collecting UI.

  • I believe it's called EI (employment Insurance) these days! More politically correct!

  • Great story. Really, really interesting :)

  • Thanks a lot :)

  • Scary!!

  • lol nice story!!

  • Good story Kevin-Teacher. I'm still considering teaching in Japan for a couple years, at some point.

  • Happy to hear things worked out in the end for you & sticking to it after such an experience certainly shows some commitment. I'm the grounds manager for our school & I mentor 3 or 4 kids with behavioural issues for a few hours each week & it can seem like the longest hours of my weeks work sometimes lol...just the constant supervision & alertness thats required for them can be quite draining...that said, it can be fun too...or just plain funny : P

  • I don't understand how and why you were given a class on your own when you didn't speak Korean. Were they clueless in the school administration?

  • Like this video again very much....always nice to listen to some stories out of peoples life ;)

And your picturesque story telling is really enjoyable!!

    greetings

  • LOL your impression of the children is pretty awesome.

  • ahah wow. man i'm tempted to start a channel called "busanDC" where i copy your story telling style man...solid gold!

  • Thanks for the story Kevin. I am plannig to go for the TESOL,, Is it absolutly a must to get a job over there, I understand it is beter to have than not. What is the CELTA?? how are the Japanese kids comparied to the Koreans.

  • lol, from what I hear, this is a very very common experience. Jet lag, teach the next day with no training to a class of crazy kids.

Heres the best advice ---teach through the EPIK program. They give you training and a free place to stay and eat for 8 days. You get about 10 guest speakers from all the different aspects of teaching in Korea and they take care of all the documents you need to teach here.

  • Comment removed

  • I have heard a lot of teachers have gone through the same thing...crazy stuff. The CELTA is wonderful and I highly recommend it.

  • Thanks! I'll add that piece advice to the sidebar!

  • What were the elementary school students in the afternoon like? Were they any different than the preschoolers?

  • Enjoyed the video. I guess the story would have been different if you spoke a little Korean, and could tell all the children to sit down and be quite.

  • you love telling stories, and we love hearing them.

  • I am indeed a story teller! Thanks for listening!

  • Man thats just crazy. I will take that in to account.

  • are you going to be teaching when you get here?

  • Yeah It be my first time teaching .

  • A word of caution about Criminal Background Checks - give them more time than you'll think they need to complete it.

Mine took 8 weeks. Then they 'lost' my info. Then another 3 weeks.

  • 7:43 lol

  • these stories are awesome! keep em coming.

  • thanks for the advice

  • Funny video. Good information too.

Teaching english is probably what I'll end up doing for a while when I go to Japan. I think I'll try and get involved in the International Student teaching program at my University next year.

  • For many people (who don't really want to be teachers0 it's a good way to get here....get established and then maybe find something else you'd like to do.

  • i love these stories :D

  • Yay! Thanks a lot :)

  • I had to watch this a couple times cause it was just hilarious (and informative of course). Lol.

I'm glad things are better now with your teaching career! Great story and thanks for sharing!

    Hilarious -> 7:42

  • lol he always has the best facial expressions

  • who? Me? ;P hehe

  • Glad you liked it so much:)
