Catalina Ponor wasn't even competing in the AA, as she's very weak on bars. In the Event Finals on beam, Patterson scored 9.775, and Catalina Ponor scored 9.787.

There have been some Olympic performances that captured my imagination more (like Daniela Silivas - even though she didn't win gold) - but Carly provided perhaps my most thrilling Olympic gymnastics moment ever when she stuck that "Patterson" dismount cold! That sent chills throughout my body.

Who doubted that she would be Olympic champion after *that*??

Carly was a brilliant gymnast in terms of calm, clean, mistake-free execution.  Maybe the steadiest competitor ever.

It's not that uncommon. I believe it was in 98' (?) someone did back hand back hand back layout full.

Shawn's first pass on beam is overrated by the commentators.

yeah, TONS of people do that pass. Deng Linlin, for example, does the same exact pass as shawn, plus tons more. Laschenova did a backhandspring layout that was BEAUTIFUL way back in 1989 :).

2 handsprings to a layout full has been done by Kui Yuan Yuan (1996 and later) and Oana Ban (2003), and there might be more I'm forgetting :)
