i would love for ole Stompin to come her to PA..I would be the only one here to hoot holler, and have the greatest time miss you all in Canada.......... happy Candada day all!!!!
I went and saw him in St.Catharines a few years ago and was disappointed cause we was apparently drunk. Wasn't a very good show and someone else was there that had seen him before and said he was usually much better (she was disappointed too). So if he comes back perhaps I'll try again.
A couple years ago(3or 4) I went to fort George in Niagara on the lake on Canada day for a sevice call (before the place opened) and as I got out of my truck what do I hear playing from in the staff building BUD THE SPUD . Dude says can you think of a more Canadian song? Nope
Out of 189K plus views and only 3 malcontents staggered around enough to find their thumbs down option; says a hell of a lot for this legendary singer! God love Stomping Tom, Canada, Our Queen, Our way of life, The Hockey Song, Bud the Spud and the Canadian Lumberjack. We have so much to be proud of. Cheers to each and every one of us! Peace.
Has Tom Connors, this excellent balladeer, been awarded The Order of Canada? His whole life he has dedicated to Canada, through music; should have brought him a nomination, at least. If not, is the government going to give it to him posthumously?! Mr. Harper, please give recognition to this noble soul, please. “Stompin’ Tom” has relayed Canadian emotions and feelings throughout the known world, by way of his musical talents and great songs. Peace.
canuckmaleman, wow, do you bring back some old memories. There were 3 of us who came to Lake Nippising from the U.S. to do some fishing (1975), but we also had a chance to see Stompin' Tom in Hamilton. What a show, what a Canadian legend. Shortly before my wife's passing in 2003, she and I had a wonderul trip to P.E.I. and Nova Scotia. "O, Canada" you are a beautiful country and wonderful folks. Keep on stompin', Tom in C-A-N-A-D-A where you "get to see it all."
Well, not literally "stuck", I just have days where I hate it here....
People are SOOOO rude, and it's just a really trashy culture... No one gives a crap about anything but themselves and no one here really knows what life is REALLY about besides trying to look rich/tough or act like their life is a music video. I know that may not make sense, but it's difficult to explain in few words.
That and the education system sucks, I meet a lot of VERY stupid/uninformed people.
I meet a lot of people that are so hung up on trying to portray an image, or emulate a stereotype that they can't just be themselves. Most guys are so insecure they need to try and act all bad-ass, everyone's got a pitbull, or a big ass truck/suv that'll never see a dirt road or tow/carry anything.
Everyone walks around with an attitude.
The kindness of strangers/politeness is something I took for granted in NS, here it's a completely foreign concept.
You'd think I'd LIKE living somewhere where I get to see Hot Rods, Muscle cars, Lamborghini's and Ferrari's on a regular basis!
I'm a car nut, and cars here last a long time and are easy to find parts for (They're big on "car culture" out here) that's one of the FEW things I like about being here....although we have "Smog Laws" so your car has to meet emission standards...and that's a drag, but I still miss The Maritimes!
I saw him at the NCO Club in Goose Bay Labrador when stationed there in the 70's. What a fantastic performer. I'm not from Canada but people like him make anyone feel at home there.
If you feel his songs aren't of sufficient "high seriousness", then you don't understand the importance of storytellers. They have the same function as Calypsonians in the Caribbean, or tribal singers in Africa. They tell the stories of the nations they represent, both timely and timeless.
Where else are you going to learn about Newfie Clogeroos, the legends of Codfish Dan, Big Joe Mufferaw, Second Narrows Bridge disaster, Wop May, Martin Hartwell, Wilf Carter.
been telling my friends in the states about Stompin Tom and now they understand a bit better what the north is about, as stompin got his start at the Good ole maple leaf hotel, now torn down
I had a great journey on a VIA rail train back in '90, in the bar car got talking to a bloke with a guitar and he played this song. It's been stuck in my head since then, popping up every now and then.
This chap kindly shared a couple of joints with me at a water stop in Kamloops in the middle of the night. Both got off in Calgary, me to stay with my sister, him to see his girlfriend in Red Deer.
Never mind Bruce Cockburn, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell... much more serious musicians IMHO. STC and Rush in the same sentence is like Sharon, Lois and Bram and Iron Maiden. Apples and Oranges.
I'm Canadian, and I think you have to be out of your mind on some kind of controlled substance to take Tom's music seriously. It's good for a chuckle at best.
I'd love to hear some serious material. Songs about potatoes and bad rhyme schemes where he could be singing about people dealing with serious issues (Inco / Stinko) do nothing for his image in my mind.
They are always harping at us to watch more canadian content. Play Stompin Tom and show him the respect and attention he deserves as a true Canadian icon and maybe we would watch Canadian content because we want to instead of being forced to. We never see him on national tv and that will go down as a huge mistake. He is the epitomy of Canada and should be shown his due.
rumor is this song was written at a kitchen table in Murray River PEI by Tom himself..I would like to talk to Tom myself because an old friend of mine...he would be 70-75 now said he picked Tom up hitch hiking down in South West Nova Scotia!
His Guitarist Mr Bill Lewis has recently passed on. Tom still lives in Georgetown, Ontario. A workmate of mine knows exactly where...should I stop by with a 6 pack someday????

I'd love to see him do a nice new years eve night some time. A bit of joking, singing, reflecting on things, pick some appropriate tunes. Have some beers and snacks, sit back, take it all in.
We should lobby for this! New years eve's have been so bland and meaningless the last number of years. Tom can change this!
