To me, that was the good catch, but the good play by Montana (a foreshadow for what was yet to come) was that first TD throw where Montana escapes the leg tackle and finds Clark in the endzone. You just knew Joe came to play that day. That whole game had some sort of magical signiature about it.
@random1jon This was before he had won his first Super Bowl my man... this was just his 3rd season in the NFL. Watch a highlight clip and you'll understand why Joe is considered one of the best.
There are a couple of other "Catches" that are worth mentioning along with Montana to Clark (1981-82 NFC Championship), Young to Owens (1998/1999 NFC Wild Card vs. Packers) and Smith to Davis (2011/2012 NFC Divisional vs. Saints).
Most people forgot about Montana to Taylor in Super Bowl 23 (1998-99 season) and Garcia to Streets (2002/2003 NFC Wild Card vs. Giants).
Thanks for the context of what should've been called "The Drive".
Vin Scully is amazing. He waits 30 seconds after describing The Catch before he talks again. The only thing you hear after is the crowd. His play by play is unmatched, no matter the sport. He even did golf before it was broadcast every week.
LOL@ the black dude in the white suit and fedora. Haha, gotta love the late 70's / early 80's. Imagine going to a *football* game in a white zoot suit!
It was this game that got me forever hooked on the NFL. This is inspiration and when football was really football. This was when the business end was kept where it belongs and the focus was on the grid-iron giants.
The start of the 49ers dynasty right here.As a kid in the 4th grade I remember this and no one thought SF would ever beat the mighty Cowboys but this one kid in our class. I'll never forget the Monday after the game him looking at me and just saying "I told you they'd win". Little did I know how many more they'd win over the next decade. As a Giant fan we were just having our first competitive year in 81 since the 60s with Ray Perkins as coach.
It doe NOT matter if the fixed game helped dallas beat the 49ERS in 92-92...this game played on 1/82, was when it most mattered. After this, the cowboys never beat the 49ERS during the eighties. I have been a 49ERS fan since the days of John Brodie. Great city.
I was born in Oakland and grew up in Castro Valley. I lived there until moving to Fresno in 1999. No, you are not hallucinating. It was Vin Scully and Hank Stram doing the broadcast. More trivia about this game. The referee was Jim Tunney and the official attendance was 60,525.
This was truly the SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS destiny of their dynasty!!!...Btw, am I hallucinating or am I actually listening to Vin Scully participating & commentating the broadcast for CBS Sports. Anyway, this is & the rest of the 1980's 49ERS dynasty is what made me a true fan now & growing up as a "Frisco Kid" from "The City."

An unsung hero during this drive was Lenvil Elliott. The man got critical yards on the ground when the 49ers most needed them. RIP Lenvil...

@ScottInVa1760 Yeah, Lenvil Elliott doesn't get enough credit for the success of this drive.

For some reason, I seem to like it better when the score isn't shown throughout the entire game and instead the screen just shows the game.
