Honestly, I won't put it beyond anti-virus companies, past and present, to release viruses of their own creation to create an epidemic panic to generate sales when they come saying "we got the magic cure, only our soft knows how to detect and diffuse this threat".

And that there are more than enough crackers out there putting out malware that it doesn't make a difference whether anti virus companies are doing it or not.

It all comes down really to properly configuring your browser, properly utilizing a firewall and know enough to not do stupid shit that puts you in a position to get your box compromised.
