  • 60s and 70s were without doubt the golden age of the Royal Air force

  • Nice vid, nice music.Apparently not one of the best F4's to be flown worldwide. The transformation didnt work out, still a beautifull bird,if u exclude the rear jet vents.

  • This aircraft was bought by the Royal Navy in 1968. That same year a bunch of RN crew went over to the USA to be "taught" how to fly em. The RN guys ended up teaching the yanks how to use them for real. That was the start of the Topgun school. USAF were losing a lot of 'planes in SE Asia at the time both to Migs and to AA fire.

  • What is the name of the tune?

  • Fascinated by the operation of the IFR probe.

  • I thought the music was the Yellow Jackets; Who is it?

  • @m41incanis It is a group called the Brand x .

  • @Faultline54 Thank u for your comment mate.

  • First posting - Coningsby on Phantoms - Heaven - a proper aircraft

  • I love Phantoms - Thanks

  • Sounds like Alan Holdsworth music.

  • Wow, I'm surprised they would taxi with canopies open. Heck, I'm surprised they would run engines with the canopy open. The intakes are right there!

  • rubbish. The F4 was a stop gap. The British aviation industry designed the most beautiful aircraft but British wash out governments sold them down the river. Look at TSR2, Lightning, hunter, etc

  • Terrible turning circle though ?

  • @TheCheekyJessiee608 Well true. But the F-4 was not designed to be a 'dogfighter". The point was to be at high altitude, high speed and fire a long range missile. However, if it got into a dogfight, it did not want to get into a turning fight, rather use its massive engines to go into the vertical.

  • shame no jet sounds but silly music, oh well

  • In my opinion, one of the most beautiful aircraft the armed forces ever operated.

  • great video my uncle started out in the Royal Canadian Airforce as a back seater in the CF101 voodoo interceptor and then transferd to the Royal Airforce and worked in Canberras and f4's i believe no4 squadron i could be wrong

  • phantastic-never seen one do a barrel role and i worked on them for 7 years

  • Thanks.

What a beautiful aeroplane - simply the best.

  • Gotta just love those "Tombs"

  • Thanks for this vid,it is so rare to find this sort of thing.the british phantom was and is my all time favourite, thanks again.

  • @stretchmark8

Agree with you and your comments. By the way that Phantom was from 43Sqn. based at RAF Leuchars. Great video.

  • @bsj911uk I used to hear them hammering out over the North Sea in the early seventies to intercept Russian bombers when I was at university. Day and night, summer and winter, usually in pairs.

Along with the TSR2, the meanest looking military aircraft around.
