Really enjoy these videos, and hope they make your phone ring even more! Have you done a review of the old saw neumann U87? If not I'd love to see one. Thanks!
I have a little "radiofonic" project, but my room is quite noisy. I've been considering USB mikes like the PG42USB or a Super 55... which of both you recommend, or you have any solutions?? We're talking of a very low budget project. Thanks
EQ is short for equalization -- in consumer audio, it's commonly used to adjust low and high pitched sounds.
If you've ever used the bass or treble knobs on a radio or stereo, you've used a very basic EQ.
Imagine if you could not only adjust the lows (bass) and highs (treble), but many subtle frequencies in between using a slider or knob. That's a traditional EQ.
EQ allows you to make subtle changes to the overall sound.
i own this mic, im running it through an apogee duet and am looking to upgrade my sound....how would you recommend going about it, someone told me an avalon 737 sp? also, you said it was very sensitive, im using it in a closet with carpeted walls and a Se reflexion filter, should i be using this in a more treated environment?
Since TLM102 "inspired" you for this video, i would like to ask someting.
Why the signal level on TLM102 video is lower than this one? It's lower than many videosi have seen. Is it a "weak" signal mic or it was just some levels on the preamp and processing rack you did put lower?
Hi Mark, thanks for doing these demos. I heard your TLM102, SM7 and TLM49 and to my ears, this TLM49 sounds the best of the 3. The SM7 took second place and to me the TLM102 sounds very tiny and not very good at all, but that's just my opinion so others make feel differently. Once again, thanks and keep up the great work!
Hey Mark, just an idea, I think it would be great, like the 1 mic you mention here your would take with you to an Island would be the U87 to have also a recording of this one to be able to more or less compare the TLM49, TLM102 and the U87. Which do YOU prefer, the "Vintage-version" or the U87ai?
....what happend to the Quality? It sounds like a lower Quality Sampling unlike in your other Videos...Maybe this is due the Videoquality, because its a bit blurry aswell.

Nice thick sound! I got the same pre. But i decided on the Mojave MA300 to run through it. You really should try that one. Designed by Dave Royer.

When I was trying to learn what this mic was called I though of TLM = Tragic Little Man :P

this has a much more relaxed and listenable sound than, for example, the md421, which was way too in your face and boomy in the lower mids.

I know this is probably a silly question, but im new to this, so... what exactly is eq, and how would you apply it to the recording?

Wondering: Is there any compression? Eq? What preamp?
Jujucaster1 1 year ago
@Jujucaster1
Both single and multi-band compression (Aphex 230, then Aphex 2020MkIII), no EQ. The pre-amp is part of the 230 package.
Thanks for the comment!

Great video...Can you try the mojave MA-200 and MA-201. Also the Avantone CV-12? Love to hear how they handle voiceovers.
carylee2002 1 year ago
@carylee2002
We tried a Mojave quite a while back (audio-only show), but I don't think it was the 200 or 201. Mojave makes an excellent mic.
The C-12 (original). Wow... that's an incredible mic. I think the C-12 would make a great show. I'll try Avantone.
Thanks for the comment!

What is the "standard" studio, vocal microphone. Like the standard microphone all artists use to record songs? (aka the most expensive one).
logic33157 2 years ago
Man, that's a tough one. It all comes down to personal taste, the project and budget.
The most expensive microphone is almost never 'best'.
If I were stranded on an Island with only 1 mic (and phantom power), I would probably go with a U87.
The real answer is that most of us have to swap out several mics every day for different jobs.
Thanks for the question, and for listening!
