One way to avoid lighting changes between photos is to set your camera to full manual. Use the exposure meter to get good levels and use the same manual settings for both images.

@djbeto267 Yeah, this is one thing that is a result of today's DSLR cameras. They can make changes in fractions of f/stops so even moving a subject around in a frame can change the lighting enough that the camera makes changes to exposure settings.

There are way easier ways to do this, this is not one of the easier ways

Considering the Contrast between the WHITE Hamper and the kid's skin, and the background, I'd have wanded that sucker, with maybe some zone specific folour selection, and a few refine adjustments (the white between the toes is driving me nuts!). and voila perfect mask. Although if you didnt for some reason take an "empty" picture without the kid and the hamper, in CS5 you can now just Content Aware Fill! WOOOH!
