ken levine is a f**king genious. i love his looks upon games and the restrictions they give. his veiws are so poetic and beautiful. he doesnt evey miss the spot on videogames, thats why i think he's my personal hero.
The reason why the protagonists of Half-Life and BioShock don't speak, is because the developers wanted the player to assume the identity of that character. If Gordon or Jack spoke, the player would feel as if they were playing "as him" whereas if they remained silent, the player "became" the protagonist (even though they are identified as Gordon and Jack.)
you're right about that, but even jack was just an alias. in an interview with Jordan Thomas he stated that Jack was just an alias that the protagonist was using. But it's safe to assume that his name is jack even though it could be something different there's no way to fully know his name for sure unless you asked the developers- and even then they would probably reluctant to tell you. Some people don't like that style of game where the protagonist doesn't speak but I love it.
i just didn't lik that u didn't hav much body awareness(i.e u couldn't see your feet, hands, or reflection. also gordon NEVER spoke.) the story was pretty digestible though.
Andrew Ryan was born in the Soviet Union during the time of the revolution... He was there long enough to become anti-communist... hmm.. Wouldn't he have a thick Russian accent then?
That's completely based off of Ayn Rand's life, by the way, and she has an intense accent.
i wouldn't be suprised to see a resurgence of a 'villian' character ala shodan in system shock 1 & 2. its possible that either andrew ryan or frank fontaine forsaw the inevitable destruction of rapture, since they were the architects of its demise and lived through quite a bit prior to the player arriving. maybe they 'downloaded' themselves somehow into some unexplained technology that a new player fines roaming wild in bioshock 2 years later.
My two favorite desginers of all time are Ken Levine and David Doak. Ken because he is the most intellegent creator of things i've ever seen. He goes into what the player wants, why everything is there, what will the players not enjoy, should we do this, can we add some more power? and david doak because he takes a team that is somewat inexperienced, and saves them and makes an amazing game (goldeneye, timesplitters 1,2,3, and I've heard good about Haze).
oh im sorry...i was just disappointed..really disapointed...when u make such monumental hits as TImsplitters, Goldeneye, and Perfect Dark, u kinda think their next-gen would be even better
Its an evolution of what weve come to expect from video games and if you ask me its a vast improvement the main reason that I dont find that many games enjoyable is that I dont feel any human connection to the game you can make the most expensive move in the world and it will suck without a compelling story
"a book without a story is just a waste of paper" msg4, half life and bioshock are the only games that made me feel real emotions and not just my thumbs getting tired and my ass going numb
half-life wasn't that entertaining of a game to me...i really enjoyed the bump up from lame storylines like quake to cinematically enhanced games like hl...but system shock 2(bioshock is the spiritual successor to ss2) came out around the same time and that was like 10 steps above hl in storytelling
Assuming you gameplay and story as opposed to modeling/audio/coding/everything else, you've got to be pretty creative. You've got to pay attention to your literature/writing/storytelling classes. You'd also want to take a look at sociology/philosophy/psychology/etc. You'd also want a bit of everything else. A coder would need programming courses (dur), math, a bit of physics and some other stuff, too. 2D/3D artistry would need photoshop and art skills, and audio would need a music background.
Charlie Day look alike.

The audio diaries are great. Sander Cohen's diary called "The Wild Bunny" is one of, if not the best audio diary in the game.
