Urine being sterile is only a myth, well at least it is now. The foods we eat contain such complex substances, such as super complex sugars you can only find in processed foods (that are not found in nature). By peeing in a river for example, you are introducing these chemicals to that ecosystem--thus throwing it out of whack. Peeing upstream is even worse.
