I've bought Folkways: A vision shared with tributes from Dylan, Springstein, Emmylou, U2 etc. I taped a BBC program years ago on Guthrie which did include deportees. However, the U2 version of "Jesus Christ" is superb! You have an excellent channel Uistman.

@UISTMAN59 Yes that is the name. Arlo is the son of Woody Guthrie that wrote this song. Arlo is also a very socially conscious man that would have made his dad proud. You would be proud to own this recording and ANY that Arlo is a part of I would hope considering.

Upon the passing of "Folkways Records" founder it's ownershiip passed to the Smithsonian with the stipulation that the music would remain forever in print reguardless of sales.

Thus preserved and passed on.

Only the lyrics had been written by Woody Guthrie, the music is an old mexican melody arranged by Martin Hoffman. Better by Judy Collins in JUDY COLLINS # 3 album 1963 and the best of the best by CISCO HOUSTON, great friend of Woody .

Deportee est une chanson d'indignation qui en fait ne pouvait être bien chantée qu à son époque ou par un témoin comme Cisco. Judy est très classiquen c est parfaiy. Mais Emmylou et Arlo sont tous 2 nés en 1947;ils ne connaissentg pas cette époque,j adore Emmylou mais le son nasvillien ne colle pas sur cette chanson, c est encore pire avec Bruce Springsteen une horreur. Arlo a eu la chance d avoir Woody comme père car il n a que peu de talent. Désolé.

So you are saying that Deportee, or amy other protest song, should only be sung by the people involved in the protest at the time, and that they have nothing to say to us today? To say that the Nashville sound is unsuitable to this song is to say nothing at all because you can't get away from the story told by these lyrics. Bruce Springsteen has sung great songs, as has Arlo. Too bad you can't see that. :-(

cher ami,il est difficile de s'expliquer en quelques mots et de s'extraire de ce l on toujours trouvé juste.Emmylou est une immense artiste dont le style est très marqué par le son nashvillien,c'est un fait indiscutable;elle et son Hot Band sont les meilleurs exemples de ce son que j'aimemais qui n'est pas toujours le meilleur pour une chanson.Par exemple "Plaisir d"amour" sur l'album Stumble Into Grace" est insupportable pour mes oreilles françaises et pourtant l'album est excellent.

Emmylou is a great artist indeed. It may be that the Nashville sound is more moulded by Emmylou and her comtemporaries rather than the other way round. It is interesting that despite your criticism this song is one of only two favourites that you have listed! :-)

Je pense que nous sommes d'accord quant à la personnalité et au grand talent d'Emmylou,mais je continue à croire qu'elle n'est pas la mieux plaçée pour interprêter Deportee.C'est pour cela que je citais une voix plus neutre et ô combien magnifique comme celle de Judy Collins comme étant plus appropriée pour ce type de chansons,il faut une voix réellement "aérienne" afin de faire ressortir un texte et une mélodie exceptionnels avec la simplicité juste de l'accompagnement.

Personnellement, je pense que l'émotion de cette chanson est miex interprétée quand Dolly Parton l'a chantée. Il y une seule chose que Emmylou n'a pas réussi, soit la voix poignante de Dolly. Je me réfère à la partie (the radio said they were just deportees). Etant donné que Dolly a un plan arriére voisin a celui de Woodie Guthrie elle est automatiquement mieux placée pour Deportee. Veuillez excuser mon francais de merde, je suis américaine. Je t'approuve quant a Arlo et Emmylou.

Hé bien, Chère Myra, tout d'abord je dois te dire que j'aimerais beaucoup parler un anglais "de merde" comme tu le fais pour le français.

Cette chanson date d'il y a 61 ans, je crois, et suis étonné qu'une jeune fille de 18 ans s'intéresse autant à l'un des plus beaux textes de W Guthrie (la mélodie n'est pas de lui, mais tu le sais certainement).

Dolly Parton la chante admirablement, je partage ton avis, le problème d'Emmylou (que j'adore) est son ton nasillard qui ne convient pas.

En général, je m'intérees autant à la musique country. Quand j'ai trouvé cette chanson, j'étais intéressée par le fait de savoir si cette chanson a été écrite par Dolly. Il faut dire que Woody (comment on l'appelle aux Etats-Unis était un artiste excellent. Je pense aussu que le ton d'Emmylou semble très modern pour une telle chanson. Presque chauque personne partageant mon age ne connait ni Dolly ni Judy. C'est triste mais c'est la vérité.

2°- La diction de Dolly est plus neutre et c'est très bien ainsi.

Comme tu as pu le lire dans mes commentaires antérieurs, j'ai une admiration sans limite pour l'interprétation de Judy Collins sur son Album # 3 , il s'agit d'un co-arrangement par elle et Jim (Roger) McGuinn; je trouve que la pureté de la voix et l'accord parfait des 2 guitares acoustiques est saisissant. J'ose le dire la perfectionn car il sublime le texte magnifique par un jeu sans faille.

Tout le monde préfère la musique de Lady Gaga que je considère comme une anomalie:) J'ai également trouvé la version de Judy et je suis absolument fascinée. Ho c'est bien simple, je m'intéresse surtout à la civilisation américaine pour une raison simple.

En 1916 mon grand-père a été tué à la WWI et en 1917, ma mère (qui avait 2 ans) a eu deux "marraines de guerre" américaines, toutes deux grandes voyageuses, Aline Shane Devine et Rosalie Slaugther Morton.

Elles sont venus voir leur "filleule" plusieurs fois en France jusqu'à la WWII et lui offraient des disques 78T que j'écoutais lorsque j'étais enfant.

Moi aussi, j'adore notre civilisation. Je sais pas puur cette raison, mais je crois qu'une nation autant jeune comme l'Amérique a une telle histoire magnifique et plus important pourtant triste. Je voulais toujours savoir tout quant aux années de la guerre civille allant jusqu'à les années 1960. Pour cimprendre tout cela plus facilement la musique de ces époques différentes était une ressource précieuse. Votre histoire personnel est vraiment incroyable et en même temps inspiratoire...
