  • haha holy crap, I used to have this VHS when I was a kid. I used to watch it all the time. Thanks for the upload. :)

  • Lol...Vintage tornados? Are those antique? Are they worth more than contempory tornados?

  • it is a good thing that we have these to help us better understand these things

  • AUNTY EM AUNTY EM ITS A TWISTER ITS A TWISTER D:!!!

  • The Dallas one 1:39-1:47 looked like it was near Colorado Park!

  • Im just glad that I was not born there that early

  • amazing!!!!!!!!

  • They're going to have to make a new tornado safety video like this for modern times. You wouldn't believe the myths people still believe.

  • This was the first tornado video I watched in elementary school

  • Plus, did you upload this from the Tornado Project videotapes? I have those tapes as well, and what a great example this is, although it's outdated. Great Post!

    ~Craig

  • @vcp430

Yes, I captured it from the 90 minute version of TVC II. I've since bought the DVDs and plan to upload a better quality version when I'm able to get the time.

  • @ColonelAngus75 I need to get my hands on the DVDs myself. My VHSs are in great shape, but you never know...

  • ESSA was established in 1965, but in 1970, it went out of service, and now it is known as NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

  • i have the video

  • They had tornados back then?

  • @stewielove101 the earliest recorded tornado was actually in England in 1066, I think. The year could be wrong. There is a wood carving depicting it striking London, I think. Back then, they thought it was God destroying all of England.

  • @1982Moonbird lol I wasn't being serious but thanks for the information :)

  • your father was a brave man to just stand there and watch it, bec ause I am scared to death about tornados. When I was a kid, I had dreams i died of a tornado.

  • @shadowfan771 i sometimes dream about tornadoes, but i don't die in them.

  • These are awesome! Thumbs up for these tornadoes! Especially the 1st one, look at that sucker rotate and move.

  • These old tornado films are creepy !

  • I'm still searching for Countdown to Survival; Tornado! by Film Communicators, 1977, narrated by the awesome Peter Thomas, the narrator heard in the Paul Hardcastle hit, 19. If anyone can find it, please post it. The only lead I had on it was a VHS version in the safety dept library, in Reynoldsburg, OH. I called them, but they say they've misplaced it, or lost it somehow, bummer.

  • At 1:50, that's the June 8th Topeka Kansas tornado. Burnett's Mound is visible in the foreground.

  • @kevin120857

    Thanks, I updated the description.

  • @kevin120857 I heard about the Topeka tornado, and I guess, correct me if I'm wrong, but Burnett's Mound, people thought that they would be safe, because many thought the tornado would not make it over the mound.

  • lawl thumbs up if this reminds you of 'The Wizard Of Oz'

  • it looks like 2000 foteih of torados

  • what year was that tornado that hit somewhere in tornado alley that was all black i think it was kansas but im not sure if someone could please tell me what year that was that would br greatly apperciated thanks

  • ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh tornado run for your life

  • OMG! I remember being shown this in elementary school in the early 70's...it was really terrifying!

  • Who's doing the narration of this film? Sounds a lot like President Eisenhower.

  • its kinda scary, cuz ppl didnt reely no anything bac then, so like everyone was in danger....there wur more tornado deaths bac then, but now there are very few now

  • I'm sure they were saying the world was going to end as many do now.

  • 1.52 is the June 8,1966 Topeka, Kansas tornado

  • I so those days were depressing.

  • Note about those tornadoes: It's a trap!

  • Some tornados are friendly, I once knew a twister that picked up a cowboy riding his horse as he was trying to flee, it lay him down gently on his back side 18 miles to the north on a farm on top of some hay, the horse however was never seen again, it is believed it was stolen & deported to Montana for bronc riding purposes.

  • My father took a color home movie of the damage that the 1953 Worcester, MA tornado did. In the begining of the film my grandparents, who my father lived with, had a cookout on a Sunday. It shows how still the air was. They were blowing air in the grill to start the fire . Then the film shows on Tuesday right after the tornado hit. It killed 94 people. It was the 20th deadliest tornado in US history.

  • i luv tonadoes

  • @1:44 it looks like a giant tooth hanging down from the cloud. Crazy!

  • looks at that MF turn at the beginning o.0

  • My father took a rare color film of the 1953 Worcester,MA tornado!

  • Of the tornado itself?

  • Man, look at all that classic Detroit Iron

  • @roguegrizzly1 The tornado footage is great, but the added bonus is the automobile influence that existed back then. If the footage is boring, the cars make up for the disappointment.

  • I'm still searching for a 15 minute tornado safety vid by a company called Film Communicators called Countdown to Survival, Tornado! which was made back in 1977 and narrated by Peter Thomas. Some of the footage in this film is also in that movie. If anyone knows where I can find, let me know.

  • I have this on video and its amazing. I've seen it atleast 50 or more times. I love it!

  • I don't understand the purpose for the stupid comments....Grow up people.

  • My turds don't float. In fact, I don't even produce turds. I live with constant diarhea. Most of the time it looks like coffee poured into toilet. I've had diarhea ever since experiencing a tornado! HA HA HA. No, I'm lying. Just thought I'd be Mr. Participator.

  • I'll admit that many that partake of this media establishment do take liberty with their comments which could be construed as "stupid". However, until the current administration destroys the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights, make your comments freely. Allow us to live as freely as we once did as children.

  • They did good for their time period. :)

  • woah i love how the twister just forms scary but awesome!!!!!! 0:01

  • Is this video now in public domain? if so where is it available?

  • where?

  • Ah yes, a classic broadcast lol

  • LOL

  • what's the purpose of sending tornado wwarnings to the newspaper. there is a tornado warning issued for rockingham county seek shelter immiediatley.(dad runs) the tornado happened yesterday dad *facepalm*

  • LOL. Funny. Actually, back then newspapers were published 3 or 4 times a day with each edition having updates of breaking news. Furthermore, a "tornado warning" was a general warning that there may be a chance that a tornado may occur on a given day. "Warnings" are far more precise today, but back then a "tornado warning" may last several hours or days because the science of predicting them with any accuracy was embarrassingly primitive.

  • @cubsfan1591 thats right

  • Ahh, Tornado Video Classics. I bought their three TVCs on DVD something like ten years ago. They were all corrupt on arrival (bad DVDR media) and mostly unwatchable. I emailed them about ten times to see if I couldn't get replacements and they ignored me. It's a shame. I can't think of anything I'd like to watch again more than the TVCs. Especially if they included these classic films - something I never got to determine.

  • 1:35 to 1:39 South Bend, IN 10/12/1956 ??

because that field look like the same as now but is little bit diffented now

  • 1:27 that piece of shit thunder is a fake. 1960's special effect sucks.

  • We lived about 50 miles SE of Goshen. We got lucky both on Palm Sunday, and again on April 3rd 1974 as twisters passed 30 miles to our north on that day!

  • For all the young people watching this film, yes there was a time when there were no cell phones,or PCs or the inter net. Gosh how did we survive

  • That is what made the work of these people even more incredible. These people did not have access to state of the art doppler radar that tracks storms down to the street almost. My hat is off to all of these folks who did incredible work with what equipment they did have to work with.

  • i love classic tornadoes

  • Love the dramatic story line of these old educational films. Notice the old United Airlines 727. Thanks for posting.

  • i remember that storm it just went right through my house while i was over in another town nearby where it started.

  • i live there yikess

  • i live in dallas also

  • I first saw this movie in second grade. It was in the gym and I can even remember where I sat regarding the projector (yep, actual film back then)because the siren was so loud. It scared me then and it still gives me shivers to watch it....

  • i live in dallas tx

  • Nice I live in Carrollton.

  • I remember seeing part of this in summer camp in the mid 70's. The projector broke though.

  • I first watched this on a special program that the local NBC affiliate ran. At the time, we lived in N.Indiana, and I well remember the Palm Sunday storms only 2 yrs before that as tornadoes passed both just to our south, and further to our northwest.

I was only 8 yrs old at that time and was both terrified and curious-typical kid!

    Thanks for the post!

  • Did you live Near Goshen IN.

  • 0:10-0:15 and 0:19-0:25 is the Perrin AFB Tornado

  • I seen this in school as well! Nice post!

  • Thank you very much for posting this!. I have not seen this since 1980 when my science teacher played this on the old reel projector. All the other kids hated this movie but I loved every minute of it. Now I can watch it whenever I want! :D

  • OMG id be soo scared ive never been in one but it sounds horrible

  • Thank you for posting this video. There's another tornado safety video I'm looking for out there entitled, Countdown to Survival; Tornado! It was made in '77 and I can't seem to find it anywhere. If anyone could post that movie, I sure would appreciate it.

  • THANK YOU so much for posting this slice of history! I've been a twister fanatic my whole life, and somewhere have a reel-to-reel audio recording of this very show...most of which I can quote by memory. Just part of having grown up in Oklahoma, I guess...thanks again! --Mark

  • You're welcome!

  • 1:39-1:51 is definitely the Dallas Tornado because in the newly unveiled film the tornado looks just like that (big wedge).

  • Thanks, I thought it was but wasn't entirely sure. I updated the description.

  • 0:34-0:36 is also definately Dallas too.

  • Sorry for making you constantly updating the description but 1:39-1:43 ONLY is actually the Perrin AFB tornado. Watch Anticyclonic's Perrin AFB tornado video and it's in there. It seems that Dallas and Perrin were pretty popluar in documentaries in the 60s and 70s!

  • I believe Anticyclonic might be mistaken with some of the footage in her Perrin AFB video. Some of that footage looks an awful lot like pictures I've seen of the Dallas tornado. I'm even beginning to think the footage seen at the very beginning of this clip might not be the Perrin twister after all.

  • Where'd you get these films?

  • This one came from Tornado Video Classics 2 which I bought from amazon.

  • I have this PSA on my tornado videos. I love watching it. :)

  • 0:19-0:26 is not the Lubbock, TX tornado because it happened at night, I live in Lubbock and I ahve studied the tornado. SOrry!!

  • 0:34-0:36 Dallas, TX 4/2/1957 100% positive (thanks to ANTICYCLONIC video).

  • 0:19-0:26 is the Lubbock, TX tornado. 100%sure

  • This film was made two and a half years before the Lubbock tornado occurred.

There was a safety film made about the Lubbock tornado that used some of the footage that was seen in this film as part of a recreation. Is that were you saw some of this footage?

  • Yeah. but they actually did use this movie in that movie.

  • Actually this was made three years before it hit. It hit in may of 1970. It was an f5 and killed 27 people.

  • 0:10-0:15 is the Lubbock, TX tornado.

  • Hey, this is a great program not accurate but great!!! Can you tell me where you get all of your footage, I have some video cassets of my own but I like your vids, where do you get all of them, the internet?

  • This clip was from Tornado Video Classics Volume 2. I also have TVC Vol 3. Some other tapes I own are "Killer Tornados" which was a two tape set that had four different docmentaries on it, Twister: Fury on the Plains, Twister 2: The Terror Continues, and "Killer Twisters".

  • I always wanted to see a tornado in real life and not in some pictures or movies but i LOVE these movies. Has anyone ever seen a tornado in real life? And if you have, can you describe it to me?

  • I saw the first when I was five in Springfield Mo, 1977. Standard wedge tornado and it wasn't so fascinating at that age, it was pretty scary.

  • I saw this in 1974 when I was in 2nd grade. I lived in NY and it was part of Tornado awareness after the Xenia Ohio outbreak. I bought this vhs tape about 11 years ago with this 1967 documentary. It is very nostalgic.

  • wow...seems like awfully scary stuff to me to be showing to second graders!

  • The video won't load!!

  • It's still loading for me.

  • does anybody have a clue as to where the tornado damage is from?

  • much of the tornado damage in this clip is from the Oak Lawn, IL tornado of April 21st, 1967. Several local landmarks can be seen including Cicero Ave., Christ Hospital, Airway Trailer Park and businesses along 95th Street. This film was shot shortly after but Oak Lawn is never directly mentioned. Oak Lawn borders Chicago on the SW Side and the tornado did do damage on the south side of the city before finally dissipating over Lake Michigan.

  • @TBirdSCIL Bullshit. Where do you get your info that "much of the tornado damage in this clip is from the Oak Lawn, IL tornado" ??? Maybe cuz you live in Burbank and like tornados? Just because this film was produced the same year as the Oak Lawn tornado, doesn't mean any footage of it was used. If you bothered to do some research, there are places on the net that list where each piece of footage for this film came from and I did not see Oak Lawn as being listed anywhere in the source footage.

  • @SUPERDOOPERTUBER - Did you even read my comment? I named specific landmarks that can be seen in some of the damage photos. Christ Hospital can CLEARLY be seen behind the damaged trailer park which is the old Airway on Cicero Ave. The McDonald's on 93rd and Cicero is also visible in the shot with the passing ILLINOIS state trooper. Think before you type. And I don't live in Burbank, ASSHOLE.

  • @GINGERALER: OK, you're the second person to debate me on this and I think this is where the confusion comes in. I was referring to scenes in Part 2 of this video (which was NOT released by the Tornado Project, only added as a bonus to one of the TVC videos that I own. And I found no such listing for source footage with the video or on their web page) see next comment

  • @GINGERALER Between 5:28 and 6:18 of part 2, you see an Illinois State Trooper heading southbound on Cicero Ave passing the damaged McDonald's at 93rd Street as well as what is now known as Fox's Pizza (formerly Country Kitchen) on the west side of the street. After that, you see Christ Hospital in the background of the damage of the Airway Trailer Park across Cicero from McDonald's at 93rd Street. This is exactly where the tornado crossed Cicero Ave.

  • @TBirdSCIL sorry, formerly German Kitchen

  • @TBirdSCIL

    He`s right...TBird I mean.

I used to have this video. When I watch the part Tb is talking about, I noticed and told my wife the same things. I told her, "hey, that`s Oak Lawn in `67! I recognized the hospital, Cicero ave and the Mcd`s.

Not sure why you guys would act so offended over it anyway? So what if it was or so what if it wasn`t! But name calling over a tornado video? Odd.

  • @GINGERALER: I will ignore the last line of your comment and chalk it up to a misunderstanding about what I was referring to.

  • Haven't seen this film since I was in the second grade at Rivers elementary at Altus Oklahoma been lookin for it everywhere thanx for posting

  • You're welcome!

  • Killer vid! OMG, I haven't seen this in ages! That's the Perrin twister at the very beginning! THANK YOU for uploading this!

  • You're welcome! And thank you for confirming that the tornado in the beginning was the Perrin AFB twister, I wasn't 100% sure on that.

  • Yep, that's it alright. There are shots of it that aren't in my vid. I do NOT have those specific shots in my own collection so it was awesome to see them again. One of my favourite twisters.

  • I have the 1996 version of Tornado!

  • Is that the one with Bruce Campbell in it?

  • Yes

  • Yep
