Yes - it is a replacement tax. What does it accomplish? It removes special interest influence from the tax system. It allows individuals to have a measure of determination on the taxes they pay - taxes are based on spending habits. As we've seen, the rich currently pay between 15-20 % of their income and capital gains - with their spending habits under the fair tax they would be paying 23% effective rate. You want to change the size of government, that is a different issue.
Read a book about Fair Tax. Make up your own mine! Anyone that is looking here is not getting all the information!!!!!
You will get a prebate everymonth. It will cover the fairtax paid for basic needs only people that spend a lot of money pay a lot of tax. And only new products are taxed. So buy used car or clothing and pay no tax on them. Read the book. It is free at the library.
I totally agree that we need less government. But our country is so much different than it was when there were no federal taxes. We have highways, that need replacing, etc. I do feel that the rich would pay more, since they consume more, and purchase more expensive items. The prebates would cover the poor for their living expenses. Our people would pay attention more to HOW they spend and possibly become savers. Loopholes in our tax system would be gone, thus no place to hide their money.
I have to say I disagree that the rich would benefit and the poor would be put down. The rich consume more and consume more expensive goods so they would end up paying more in consumption. The poor also receive a monthly prebate to cover costs of living with their household size taken into account. There is also no capital gains tax or most corporate taxes. So that brings jobs back to the US. This is what we need right now
It doesn't matter what kind of tax they give us, they will find a way to game the system into their advantage. Eventually they will decide to tax one item at a higher rate than another & before you know it it's 70% for gas like in England. The best thing to do is to remove all federal taxes completely & assign them a flat percentage paid by each state per quarter. Also, with state taxes we'd get taxed twice on everything we buy.
@brotherkantutta It's called an evil religion because it was founded by a murdering warlord who killed, raped, & plundered his way across the Arabian peninsula. A man who all other muslims are supposed to emulate until the end of day.
1.) I have not heard anyone sugest, or read that the Fair Tax will DRAMATICALLY increase the cost of any particular item more than it's current cost. So this does not seem valid. A $500 TV will still end up costing about $500. So this point seems invaild
2.) If you would, as some have suggested (including Milton Freidman), submit lesiglation that caps total federal spending at a certain % of GDP this would eliminate pols from coming in afterwards and start a spending spree again.
Sorry dude, agree with your comments about spending and corruption, but the rest is B.S. Alot of bait and switch, and alot of flat out lies. While we wait for them to fix corruption and spending, we should just deal with the IRS? No thanks. The fairtax isn't a final solution, but it's a great step in the right direction to restore the power to the people. Bring the cost of gov't to the forefront instead of hiding it behind complex tax code.
i kept checking to see if i had another tab open with some stupid ad playing because i heard out of place music . then i realized it was the background music for your video.
you mention "let the states subscribe to the federal programs they wish to adopt". Interesting how Texas is contemplating dropping medicaid (link) I'm sure we'll see more of this in the future.
But wouldn't the government be downsized, once the percentage of our spending is shown on every sales receipt? The FairTax won't raise prices, yet your purchasing power will rise, since you'll keep your whole pay check. The poor won't be taxed at all, after their prebate.
Fairtax is revenue neutral like my pony can shit gold bricks. The Fairtax is preposterous nonsense -- it's biggest revenue source is a tax on GOVERNMENT spending. Every city, county, state, every thing. They know it's wacky jacky lacky BS. That's why they avoid hearings under oath. These FT boys are con artist bullshitters, and are NOT trying to pass their own plan. THEY know it's insane.
Actually Fairtax is a bad idea because it's literally a farce. It's basic idea is preposterous nonsense -- and it's own leaders know it. They have avoided hearings under oath for 12 years now, and will never try to pass their own plan. Its beyond silly. For one thing, they pretend they will tax the GOVERNMENT -- at all levels -- for most of government revenue. Yes -- its that insane, that bogus.
Your right. So what's your plan? Wouldn't the FairTax be a good stepping stone to reducing the fed gov? Once we get the FariTax, it'll be a lot easier, because people will see the cost (in the percentage) of the fed gov on every retail sales receipt. Also, you understand that prices won't go up, right? And if they do, your purchasing power will go up, also.
You claim to know the fairtax but you completely missed some important points of it. Getting rid of the IRS would shrink the government. Embedded taxes equal 16% percent of the cost of an item, whether it has an additional sales tax or not. The prebate ensures no taxes up to the poverty level. Money made illegally is not taxed. Billions are spent complying with tax code, businesses already collect and turn in sales tax, therefore no additional burden. Etc, etc, etc, etc. Get educated. FAIRTAX.
Just make it that everybody is paying the same % rate. How do to it? When you deposit your money in bank, just say 10% on the dollar goes to the gov. to fund things. Then make it that they have to stay in the black not in the red. If that % rate isn't enough, Take a vote in america!!! With a true Vote, and open all the books and see where the money goes.
Funny -- everyone wants that in theory. But run for office on cutting medicare -- guess what? You dont get elected.
Fairtax - it's not revenue neutral. It's a farce, a hoax. The fine print has a huge new tax that every city, state, and even the military supposedly will pay. Hello you idiots -- wont happen.
Run on cutting spending is fine -- just get ready to lose when your opponent blasts you for hating old people.
@DontTrustTaxCons You keep saying it's fine print. It's not fine print, it's in the details. EVERYONE, including gov't pays the tax. Their portion of the tax gets recycled back to them, so it doesn't matter. But it's in there to avoid having any exemptions for anyone for anything, which is much of the current problem. And how is it much different than now, the gov't pays taxes now, if not directly, then indirectly, like gov't contractors who get 100% of their income from gov't paying taxes.
This young man makes and reminds us of many valid points regarding taxation. allow me to make a valid point.....Under The Flat Tax Law, illegals and tax dodgers would now be under the umbrella of paying there fair share as long as they sit on American soil......FOLLOW?
Waste - since Fairtax is a farce, since it's own leaders know its a farce, since they have avoided all hearing under oath for 13 years, since its a giant hoax, since it pretends to tax the government for most government revenue----- you don't have to worry about illegals or tax dodgers paying anything. Fairtax is sillly nonsense and its own leaders know it.
Great video and comments....some have gone astray. A flat tax should not be implemented to SOLVE FISCAL PROBLEMS. It would be implemented so that an American could and would be able to make there own choice on how much to spend and when to spend.
As a swede that's have among the hardest taxed population on this planet I can tell that it's not all bad.
Necessary livingcosts are CHEAP, school (including university) are free, hospital=cheap, the list goes on..
As a result demanded wages for high educated people is very low in comparison as no large buffer is needed ($100'000 would keep you running for 10-20years)
Also you have wrong about the houseprice as most of the price is base on what people are willing to/can pay.
I wish it were as progressive a s it was under Eisenhower (90%for highest tax bracket).
YES, tariffs, higher taxes on corporations - collection on the billions they are currently failing to pay with no penalty - and a return to Eisenhower progressive and JUST tax system
The fair tax was not fair. It was a giveaway to the wealthy & a huge tax increase on the middle class as you point out AND THE POOR.
I think we need to cut federal spending on defense (say by 90% considering black budgets), bridges to now where..., but the forefathers did not anticipate the need for FEDERALLY REGULATED AND ORGANIZED tasks and programs. Notwithstanding the merits of the Constitution + the questions on the 16th amendment I believe we need a n income tax.
@DavidThePatriot Man, i was all prepared to rebut you, but i thought you where just a mindless socialist who loves a tax on income to support crap we don't need. It turns out you are probably a libertarian, and I agree with you. Though i think, if the fair tax did pass, then people would really see what the federal government is really costing them, then hopefully minds will change. Hell now if you ask Americans, most think they Get money BACK, instead of considering their withholdings.
You are assuming that you do not pay taxes already. It's called embedded taxation, and you already pay 22-33 percent on ALL Goods you buy, just because it isn't on the receipt doesn't mean the business that produced it didn't pass them along. Think.
I agree for the most part with this video. I see the Fair Tax as a good thing since in order to enact it we must repeal the 16th amendment. Once it is place, we can lobby for reduced govt and spending then eventually repeal the Fair Tax. Consider it a stepping stone towards eliminating direct taxation on the citizens. Just my $0.02.
Which would be about 8k, and thats only if they spend all their money. We must also remember that if this family was making 50k in our current tax system they would now be making about 75k without any income tax.
Some good things to think about. I am not a huge Fair Tax guy at all but think its worth looking at. Not sure about the whole middle class being the hardest hit. You did not mention the prebate. That basically makes it so you dont pay any tax on your first 25k or so. So if the avg family is making 50k they pay 30% on only 25k.
The "rich" would benefit even more under a complete unreplaced repeal of the income tax. But even so, I don't like arguments based on definitions of class.
I support a complete unreplaced repeal of the income tax, but I have to admit a sales tax would help to encourage people to save more (a good thing considering the poor saving rate.)
I agree most of the money should remain in the states rather then sending it to DC.
