Yes - it is a replacement tax. What does it accomplish? It removes special interest influence from the tax system. It allows individuals to have a measure of determination on the taxes they pay - taxes are based on spending habits. As we've seen, the rich currently pay between 15-20 % of their income and capital gains - with their spending habits under the fair tax they would be paying 23% effective rate. You want to change the size of government, that is a different issue.

You will get a prebate everymonth. It will cover the fairtax paid for basic needs only people that spend a lot of money pay a lot of tax. And only new products are taxed. So buy used car or clothing and pay no tax on them. Read the book. It is free at the library.

I totally agree that we need less government. But our country is so much different than it was when there were no federal taxes. We have highways, that need replacing, etc. I do feel that the rich would pay more, since they consume more, and purchase more expensive items. The prebates would cover the poor for their living expenses. Our people would pay attention more to HOW they spend and possibly become savers. Loopholes in our tax system would be gone, thus no place to hide their money.

I have to say I disagree that the rich would benefit and the poor would be put down. The rich consume more and consume more expensive goods so they would end up paying more in consumption. The poor also receive a monthly prebate to cover costs of living with their household size taken into account. There is also no capital gains tax or most corporate taxes. So that brings jobs back to the US. This is what we need right now

It doesn't matter what kind of tax they give us, they will find a way to game the system into their advantage. Eventually they will decide to tax one item at a higher rate than another & before you know it it's 70% for gas like in England. The best thing to do is to remove all federal taxes completely & assign them a flat percentage paid by each state per quarter. Also, with state taxes we'd get taxed twice on everything we buy.

1.) I have not heard anyone sugest, or read that the Fair Tax will DRAMATICALLY increase the cost of any particular item more than it's current cost. So this does not seem valid. A $500 TV will still end up costing about $500. So this point seems invaild

2.) If you would, as some have suggested (including Milton Freidman), submit lesiglation that caps total federal spending at a certain % of GDP this would eliminate pols from coming in afterwards and start a spending spree again.

You claim to know the fairtax but you completely missed some important points of it. Getting rid of the IRS would shrink the government. Embedded taxes equal 16% percent of the cost of an item, whether it has an additional sales tax or not. The prebate ensures no taxes up to the poverty level. Money made illegally is not taxed. Billions are spent complying with tax code, businesses already collect and turn in sales tax, therefore no additional burden. Etc, etc, etc, etc. Get educated. FAIRTAX.

Just make it that everybody is paying the same % rate. How do to it? When you deposit your money in bank, just say 10% on the dollar goes to the gov. to fund things. Their portion of the tax gets recycled back to them, so it doesn't matter. But it's in there to avoid having any exemptions for anyone for anything, which is much of the current problem. And how is it much different than now, the gov't pays taxes now, if not directly, then indirectly, like gov't contractors who get 100% of their income from gov't paying taxes.

As a swede that's have among the hardest taxed population on this planet I can tell that it's not all bad.

Necessary livingcosts are CHEAP, school (including university) are free, hospital=cheap, the list goes on..

As a result demanded wages for high educated people is very low in comparison as no large buffer is needed ($100'000 would keep you running for 10-20years)

Also you have wrong about the houseprice as most of the price is base on what people are willing to/can pay.

The fair tax was not fair. It was a giveaway to the wealthy & a huge tax increase on the middle class as you point out AND THE POOR.

I think we need to cut federal spending on defense (say by 90% considering black budgets), bridges to now where..., but the forefathers did not anticipate the need for FEDERALLY REGULATED AND ORGANIZED tasks and programs. Notwithstanding the merits of the Constitution + the questions on the 16th amendment I believe we need a n income tax.

I agree for the most part with this video. I see the Fair Tax as a good thing since in order to enact it we must repeal the 16th amendment. Once it is place, we can lobby for reduced govt and spending then eventually repeal the Fair Tax. Consider it a stepping stone towards eliminating direct taxation on the citizens. Just my $0.02.

Some good things to think about. I am not a huge Fair Tax guy at all but think its worth looking at. Not sure about the whole middle class being the hardest hit. You did not mention the prebate. That basically makes it so you dont pay any tax on your first 25k or so. So if the avg family is making 50k they pay 30% on only 25k.
