Net neutrality is what we have now... Why would anyone want the greatest invention in communications history to be controlled by corporations with interests only in profits? This creates far more censorship than what we have now. Have you seen the internet, there is some disgusting and awful shit on here, so how can you say that net neutrality is government regulation?
People, this is not a Conservative or Liberal issue. This is an American issue. And the Government needs to ensure that only the rich get richer. EVERYONE and EVERY COMPANY should have equal right to get its content to the American people - at the same speed for all!
I make my living on line as a web developer and host. By extension, all of my customers also earn at least part of their incomes on the Internet. I sent them all a letter encouraging them to scream loud, long and often to both the FCC and their members of Congress. This is the page with FCC info. If you remain silent you do so at your own peril. Stuffdone com slash fcc
I know how to regulate the internet that would improve everyones life. Anytime we hear al frankens voice our computers would lock up...freeze...begin to smoke...and so on. Perhaps youtube should be banned from having frankens mug and voice being uploaded. Everytime I hear frankens voice it makes me want to upload my pants.
@082550 You are a douche for that rambling nonsense that doesn't express any stance, but just merely insults Franken for expressing an opinion. Why don't you just shut the fuck up? Seriously though... Shut the fuck up.
@aclose78 You are the douche bag. You have your nose so far up frankens asshole that you're beginning to smell like the turd franken is. It is a shame you can't fathom the size of boob franken is...but that is because your nose is up his ass. Now you better shut the fuck up so you can stop swallowing the shit franken is handing you. Maybe...just maybe...you are a freak and enjoy eating his shit after you masturbate on his pile. Does that cover it...nah...ran out of characters shit face.
So lets get this straight here. Franken describes a situation that does not exist and how much it terrifies him. He does this after talking about how important free speech is then starts in on talking about government control of content and how that would be a good thing.
The government did not create the internet as it exists today. We citizens did.
Any legislation that Franken would want I can tell nobody who loves liberty would like.
@illustruscorp You are entirely wrong. Franken wants regulation of cooperations so that they are NOT able to hinder the free speech rights of a citizen.
So glad we have a wise latino woman making these decisions. What a joke. She is the biggest racist ever to sit on the bench. But its ok because she's not white.
Network Neutrailty is key to the recovery of the economy!!! Why are we still debating this!?!? Corporate deregulation is quickly killing off the economy!!! The corporate greed and corruption is the main reason that America is in a recession -- one of its worst if I understand correctly since The Great Depression!!! Corporate lobbying benefitting special interests and not public interests have got to go!!! Japan, Finland and Sweden are just some of the countries with faster connections!!!
Franken and Sotomayer are NOT themselves neutral. Franken is definitely leftwing, and a puppet of corporate America.
Sotomayer's record also shows that she has political agendas. Do you really think, for example, that she would rule impartially against the illegals? Existing federal law says it's a felony CRIME to enter our country illegally, as well as to aid or abet, or to encourage or harbor, illegal aliens. Do you think she would enforce the law?
This is great. So Franken is both dedicated to strengthening the largest and most powerful corporations while simultaneously deeply devoted to an ideology that demands their nationalization and destruction? That's a neat trick.
Here we see another example of how right-wing stereotypes and hatemongering don't actually have to make any sense; they just have to be emotionally provocative. It's called propaganda, and it's one of the few things they're good at. Remember the purple-heart band-aids?
Women make such compassionate leaders and make such fair decisions. Margaret Thatcher, Indira Gandhi. Golda "there's no such thing as a Palestinian" Meir. Oh yeah.

The Supreme Court should be comprised of all women or at a minimum, five or six women given that women make up something like 55% of the population. That also means that taken in totality, apx 55% of Congress (House and Senate) should be composed of women. You are a sexist, egostitical, bigot. Shut up!!
You're calling someone "sexist", "egotistical", and a "bigot" right after you just made the sexist, egotistical, bigoted comment that the Supreme Court should be made up of 100% women.
That's right, men don't have motherhood genes, but instead, they have fatherhood genes. And when I remember my father, I doubt that this would make him more fair. So I think they are as biased as mothers.
What Franken took ten minutes to ask was, "Do you think the Second Amendment demands that Internet access be a right?"
What sorta-maybe-or took ten minutes to answer was, "No." (I think.)
She'd make a great bureaucrat (she takes forever to do the simplest things) but she does not have what it takes to be a Supreme Court judge, at least not in my opinion.
Republicans/Corporations are against net neutrality because MoveOn kicked their asses at fund raising SO badly by going directly to voters that Republicans/Corporations- 'Corpublicans'?- want to OWN the internet and make it too expensive for MoveOn to kick their asses even worse in the next election.
Hopefully, Franken will continue to champion net neutrality, it would be a great place for him to start as a legislator.
LEAHY SAID: "You said that, quote, you 'would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would reach wise decisions.'"
The actual quote, delivered in a 2001 speech to law students at the University of California at Berkeley, was: "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."
Franken is right--We have some work to do! The Law says, "Congress shall make no law . . . " No, it's not about Congress "balancing" rights. Do we or do we not have "rights" as citizens? Maybe the courts shouldn't have given equal rights to humanly created corporations, as it also states clearly, "All MEN (HUMANS) are created equal and are ENDOWED BY THEIR CREATOR with INALIENABLE rights!" Get out your pocket Constitutions!!

Hey look it's the idiot Al Franken - the guy from the lib's super leftwing Air America. When he couldn't get an audience there, he was so pissed that he worked with ACORN to cheat his way into the senate so that he could stop common sense broadcasts from those on the right.
Her answer made perfect sense to me. You can't broadly say that 1st amendment rights are superior to another right or interest. It is a case-by-case analysis, and as much as I deride judicial review and loose interpretations of things like the Interstate Commerce Clause, I'm happy she didn't say YES.
So a ISP fucks around with your access to certain things. Guess what? That creates a market incentive for someone to come in and be fair, too bad the lobbies/regulation restrict competition.
I don't see how this conflicts with any other right, is the thing. It conlicts with "interests", sure, but not any rights. And rights ARE more important than "interests".
100% agree with you JoshBrown - but it is easy for the corptocracy to confuse the debate and I think Sotomayor, and a lot of other judges, have fallen victim to that confusion.
I have conservative tendencies, and I find myself impressed with Franken's articulate question on this topic (though I don't fully agree with him). I'm similarly impressed with Sotomayor's articulate expression of her position (though I don't completely agree with her). Most people would lose their ability to think and speak so clearly after hours of interrogation in that atmosphere.
Government regulation is what keeps the internet accessible to everyone. Without it, service providers would hijack the net and basically determine what people can see and read. They are the ones doing the hijacking, not the government.
Woo! Go Al Franken! Protect that net neutrality!n Fucking telcom pigs - Cox, Comcast, AT&T - want monopolies and control over our right to the freedom of speech, and of fair communication. I hope more people get behind this idea and say 'no thank you' (or better yet, 'no fuck you') to briefcases of cash being handed under the desks shared by politicians and lobbyists.
While you have a point regarding censorship (and I'm not going to pretend that the government doesn't have stupid rules concerning what people can say or do on TV or radio), you can challenge the government on censorship. The First Amendment applies to the government. The same cannot be said of corporations, which can censor whatever they choose and cannot be sued under the First Amendment for doing so.
The Private companies did not invent the internet, thats the first thing you need to understand. So building upon, and networking the internet doesnt make them the owners of the internet. There only job is to provide a technical means to connect to the internet(network) thats it, nothing more nothing less.
@803brando so what if it was made publicly. It is no longer. It is now privately owned. What ought to be more important is access to the market of internet providing.
@ferrozm What does that even mean? access to the market of internet providing? I'm not trying to be insulting, I'm just curious. I would like to know so that I may respond appropriately.
@aclose78 you are insulting. Your very existence exudes insult. Finish swallowing frankens shit and come back when you can respond appropriately...or just spit the shit out and then respond...but brush your teeth first because frankens shit will make your breath stink, but you must already know that. So just shut the fuck up and stay off our backs freak face.
@082550 Dude do you even read your own B.S. before you say it? I mean honestly has it crossed your mind that you haven't made ANY argument at all? All you're doing is attacking me and attacking Franken. Say what you want because anybody that reads your idiotic comments will be able to see clearly just how much of an idiot you are. RESPOND APPROPRIATELY?!?!?! ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? YOU DIDN'T SAY A GOD DAMN THING YOU MOTHER FUCKING MORON. Shutting up isn't enough for you. Go die.
@aclose78 What i mean is that all legal or regulatory barriers into the market of internet providers should be abolished so as to allow more companies to start up. the proliferation of providers would allow more competition and would allow consumers more choices if the providers were to censor content not to mention lower the cost of providing.
@ferrozm well... The internet uses a lot of public resources and the infostructure necessary to start a reasonable company that can access a worth while customer base is quite frankly enormous. The real barrier to getting into the market is the cost to start the company. Besides that, what is the point in doubling up the infostructure? It's a waste of time and money. The regulations are barriers to the market only in that they keep profit incentives for starting a company low.
